Yara International is a Norwegian company and one of the world's leading producers of nitrate-based fertilizer. It probably took me six months to research and prepare for this interview.
Fertlizer is a complex topic and I really wanted someone not at all into agriculture to be able to understand its role and history in our food system.
The conversation with Terje Knutsen, Executive Vice President of Farming Solutions, was fascinating. Yara started as a green fertilizer company and then transitioned to using coal and gas in their production when prices for those energy inputs dropped. Now, they are finding their way back to green fertilizer and transitioning to becoming an energy producer within the hydrogen economy in the process.
This episode is on the longer side, but it covers many important topics from fertilizer to soil carbon sequestration and precision agriculture. We speak about how Yara is actively collaborating along the whole value chain to decarbonize the foodsystem.
