KLUDGIT SOUND is one of the most well‐known and respected recording studios in New Mexico with a splendid history of providing stellar and quality music recordings.
The studio was designed by the legendary award winning engineer Baird Banner and opened for business in 1976. Along with John Wagner's studio in Albuquerque, Kludgit Sound was the first multitrack studio in the state of New Mexico. Built inside a beautiful late-1800's cut stone building. The historic building started as a horse stable then became a small town opera house, after that it became the first Masonic Lodge in New Mexico (while The Scottish Rite Temple was being built). Baird found the building while playing drums for the New Mexico psychedelic bluegrass band ‘The Family Lotus' ‐ when many of the band members lived in and around the village of Cerrillos.
Many famous (and not so famous) musicians, poets and radio commercials have recorded here. We've loved working with them all!...well, most of them, except the one musician, who shall-not-be-named, pulled a gun on the engineer. Nothing happened, the gun was put away and the studio got paid. Needless to say, he was never allowed back in the studio. Whew!

Some of those TV showsare Solid Gold, Perry Como, Liberace, Barbara Walters Show, Carol Burnett, Andy Williams, Live at the Apollo. Solid Gold, Star Search. Sound and Audio gear is natural and second nature to Baird. He lives, sleeps, reads, drinks and eats it. Baird attended UCLA and USC Colleges, Syn‐Aud‐Con, Devrae School of Electronics, Otari Maintenance School. He worked at Grandma’s Music in ABQ for 10 years, consulting, designing and installing studios and audio & lighting systems. For the past 5 years he has been the main partner of an Audio, Lighting and Video company called 'Vast Technologies', with his partner, Steve MacArthur, they design, build and install sound systems, recording studios, lights and visual media systems throughout NM. Baird works with new gear, old gear, builds and repairs gear. He's a true gear head which is evident by the fantastic recordings he creates and the focus he gives to his recordings, the room and equipment. Kludgit has had great recording engineers including‐ Randy Rand, Alan Hand, Joseph Schlick, Art Welter, Marlin Curry, Stan Welsh, Phil Applebaum.
Baird and his wife of over 35 years, Busy McCarroll, are the owners of Kludgit Sound, Busy runs the business end. Both are professional musicians who have been involved in making and recording music for most of their lives ‐ they enjoy every minute of it and don't have any plans of stopping. Of all the amazing musicians who’ve entered our studio doors, we must say that our very favorite and most loved is our wonderful and talented daughter, Alana Banner, she’s been recording at Kludgit Sound (and other studios) since she was a teeny tiny sweet baby. It’s in her blood.
You too can get your name on the Kludgit Sound Hall of Fame list.
Let us know if you recorded at Kludgit but we forgot to include your name, and we’ll put you on the list. XO
