Rowing Team Accidentally Rows All the Way to Antarctica

A freak accident occurred on the St. Mary’s River last weekend that had never happened before in St. Mary’s College of Maryland history. During an early morning practice, the seahawk DIII Rowing team accidentally rowed all the way to the continent of Antarctica. We reached out to a few members of the team to ask if they could comment on this awkward and odd experience they had.

Bang Energy Drinks Now the Official Sponsored Drink of USA Public Elementary Schools

Last week, President Trump made a surprising announcement. He shared that Bang Energy Drinks will now be the official sponsored drink of U.S. public elementary schools. As a part of this sponsorship, a Bang energy drink will now be included in every school supplied breakfast and lunch and all school mascots will be a huge energy drink. This announcement was especially shocking to parents because each drink contains a whopping 300 mg of caffeine, which is the upward limit of recommended intake for adults.

29 Dead, 58 Injured in Thailand Massacre

A shooting spree in the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima, commonly known as Korat, has left 29 dead and another 58 injured. The shooting occurred over the course of 18 hours on Feb. 8 and 9. The perpetrator of the violence was reported to be a soldier in Thailand’s army. The attack does not appear to have been politically motivated.

The violence began on the Suatham Phithak military base, where the shooter was to have a meeting with his commanding officer, Colonel Anantharot Krasae, regarding a “land-selling commision fee,” according to CNN. The meeting quickly went south when the shooter killed Krasae as well as Krasae’s mother-in-law, Anong Mitchan. The shooter then stole several assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from the base before escaping in a stolen humvee.

Please Give Them A Break: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Leave The Royal Family

On January 8, via on Instagram, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they were no longer affiliating in their roles as members of the British Royal Family. They made it clear from the beginning of their post that they are going to “work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen

The couple explained that they are going to spend their time between both the United Kingdom and North America, prioritizing their family, especially their eight-month-old son born in May 2019, Archie. They also explained that they have intentions to continue charitable ties with Harry’s still-royal family with the announcement of a future philanthropic venture. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties.” AP News claims “The couple’s desire to separate from the rest of the family had been the subject of media speculation for months. But they angered senior royals by revealing their plans on Instagram and a new website without advance clearance from the queen or palace officials.”

Brexit Ends: UK Leaves EU
After nearly three years of discussion, protests and resignations from prime ministers, the United Kingdom (UK) left the European Union (EU) on Jan. 31, at 11 p.m. The day marked the cessation of Article 50 and the beginning of 11-month negotiations with the European Union, in which Britain will work on trade deals and sort out the details of its new international relationships. The country will have to work out the terms of these relationships and the legal framework of the departure, especially surrounding fishing rights, financial services, Northern Ireland border laws, data protection and EU law enforcement jurisdiction.

SMCM Students Affected as the World Fights the Coronavirus

Nations with those infected by the virus are monitoring and quarantining these individuals to curtail its spread. The United States government has instituted a policy of voluntary quarantine on US military installations until residents have shown no symptoms for 14 days (the incubation period for the coronavirus).

Many Americans including St. Mary’s students have left China as the severity of the outbreak and travel restrictions have increased. The Point News interviewed three students that studied abroad in Shanghai, a city about nine hours from the epicenter in Wuhan.
