Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has committed over N500 million to Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions across the country to facilitate research and innovations to promote developments in the Nigerian telecommunications industry.
Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, disclosed this at a two-day Regional Roundtable with Academia, Industry and Other Stakeholders in Kano at the weekend. He said the funds have been committed to research grants to universities and tertiary institutions, including professorial chairs in the universities in salient areas to drive technology development.
Danbatta said the Commission is now focused on supporting the academia in the commercialisation of the prototypes from these innovative researches as this is relevant to the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy’s policy towards achieving indigenous technology for sustainable development of our country. He said the roundtable organised by the Commission was to provide the necessary platform to support the commercialisation of locally- developed telecommunications innovations which NCC has been sponsoring.
“The Commission collaborates with the Academia in maximising the contributions of tertiary institutions to innovations and sustainable development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry as finance is needed to drive possible success of these endeavours, ” Danbatta said.
He said that these efforts have enabled the Commission to contribute to national efforts to ensure overall growth of the industry and create wealth for innovators, saying all these are fundamental to the objective of the NCC’s R&D-oriented programmes.
On the basis of these, he said ideas, inventions, and improvements that emanate from the academia are required by the industry f

The NCC boss gave the fiqure in Lagos in his keynote address at the 11th eWorld Forum which featured the launch of a book: “Nigeria Drivers of Digital Prosperity: The Trajectories of the Digital Evolution, Sector Analysis and Players Contributions”, authored by the Convener of the forum, Aaron Ukodie, publisher of eWorld News Online."

Broadband penetration increased from eight per cent to 43.67 per cent, indicating that over 83.3 million subscribers are on broadband networks of 3G and 4G.“Indeed, between November 2021 and May 2022, the networks have added seven million new users,” Danbatta said.
Represented by the NCC’s Head, Spectrum Administration, Abraham Oshadami, Danbata said that in the fourth quarter of 2021, the sector contributed 12.61 per cent to the GDP, a reasonable leap from 8.50 per cent in 2015.

NCC raises alarm on cyber attack ,unlocking, stealing vehicles
By News line-May16,2022
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has alerted telecom consumers and members of the public on an ongoing cyber-vulnerability which allows a nearby hacker to unlock vehicles, start their engines wirelessly and make away with them.
The NCC’s Director of Public Affairs (DPA), Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, quoted the latest advisory, released by the Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) established by the NCC, as saying:"The fact that car remotes were categorised as short-range devices that make use of Radio Frequency (RF) to lock and unlock cars informed the need to alert Nigerians on this emergent danger.
“The vulnerability is a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack or, more specifically, a replay attack in which an attacker intercepts the RF signals normally sent from a remote key fob to the car. It manipulates these signals and re-sends them later to unlock the car at will.
According to the cyber-alert unit of the commission, when affected, the only mitigation is to reset your key fob at the dealership. He advised car owners ( Honda,Acura) to choose Passive Keyless Entry (PKE) as opposed to Remote Keyless Entry (RKE), which would make it harder for an attacker to read the signal due to the fact that criminals would need to be at close range to carry out their nefarious acts.
He explained that the PKE is an automotive security system that operates automatically when the user is in proximity to the vehicle, unlocking the door on approach or when the door handle is pulled. The user locks it when walking away or touches the car on exit.
Cyber crime: NCC warns against SMS-based malware, TangleBot
By News line-January 31,2022
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned the public against a new high-risk, critical and Short Messaging Service-based malware( maliciuis software), TangleBot, infecting Android mobile devices and stealing sensitive data stored on the device and monitors almost every user activity, including camera use, audio conversation among others
Director of Public Affairs (DPA), NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde made this known in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He noted that TangleBot employs more or less similar tactics as the recently-announced notorious FlutBot SMS Android malware that targets mobile devices. He said that TangleBot equally gains control of the device but in far more invasive manner than the FlutBot malware.
Malware, otherwise called malicious software, is any programme or file that is intentionally harmful to a computer, network or server.
Adinde said that the disclosure on TangleBot was made in a recent security advisory, made available to the Commission’s New Media and Information Security Department by the Nigerian Computer Emergency Response Team (ngCERT).
According to Adinde, "TangleBotAndroid malware is installed when an unsuspecting user clicks on a malicious link disguised as COVID-19 vaccination appointment-related information.
“This can be in an SMS message or information about fake local power outages that are due to occur.
“The aim behind both or either of the messages on COVID-19 or impending power outages is to encourage potential victims to follow a link that supposedly offers detailed information.
“Once at the page, users are asked to update applications such as Adobe Flash Player to view the page’s content.
“By going through nine nine dialogue boxes to give acceptance to different permissions that will allow the malware operators initiate the malware configuration process.
He said that the immediate consequence to this is
