It was the 23rd of May, 1996, when a man was walking along a wooded canal bank on Old U.S. 27 in Clewiston, Palm Beach County, Florida. He was searching for scrap metal and cans when he came across a maroon and white Indian or Mexican style blanket and a woman’s black and white sweater. The area was in a seldom travelled dead-end road, around two miles from Hendry County.

The man decided he would investigate. As he got closer to the blanket and sweater, he noticed that there was a deceased baby girl wrapped up inside. She was estimated to be between four and six weeks old and was either white or Hispanic. The baby girl had black or dark brown hair. Due to decomposition, it couldn’t be determined what colour her eyes were.

The man immediately called police who cordoned off the area and transported the body to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy to be conducted. It would determine that she had been dead for around five days. She also had a fractured mandible and maxilla and had died either of accidental or intentional injures.

This breaks my heart..... 💔 We need to find out who did this and we need to give this little angel her name back..... 😔

4 months after young girl's body was found in the Grand River, police still don't know who she is

➡️Forensic anthropologist Emily Holland said the girl's age and time in water complicate the autopsy⬅️

Posted: 1 Hour Ago

Four months after the body of a girl, between the age of 10 months and two-years old, was found in the Grand River near Dunnville, Ont., police still don't know who she is or how she died.

Emergency crews responded to a call around 1:22 p.m. on May 17, after the remains were found in the river.

OPP Det.-Insp. Shawn Glassford said in May it was unclear how long the girl was in the water and whether the body may have moved with the current from a different place

On Wednesday, four months later, he told CBC News, "these things take time," adding that the doctors at the office of the chief pathologist are doing "painstaking work" related to the autopsy of the child.

"We all want answers quickly," Glassford said. "It's important for the community to know we are still investigating this case. We want to identify this child."

The family of the child has also not been identified.

"We're looking for missing children ... really across Canada and the United States," Glassford said in May, adding tips had come in from across the province and the U.S.

None of the tips have so far led to an identification.

Emily Holland, a forensic anthropologist in the department of anthropology at Brandon University in Manitoba, agreed that quick answers are not always possible in these cases.

She says an "autopsy can take different amounts of time depending on the complicated nature of the case" and locating the body in water makes finding answers more difficult.

"Water complicates the whole process," she said. "It complicates estimating time since death and it complicates estimating where this person originally came from."

Back in May, Wasyl Luczkiw, whose family owns the Grand River Marina and Cafe in Dunnville, said police used the business's property as a base for their investigation, and used one of the marina's boats to conduct the search.

The body's discovery was "surprising and shocking and sad to hear that somebody lost a loved one," Luczkiw told CBC Hamilton, adding he hoped the family could eventually find closure.

Holland says there are other complications in the identification process. She says there's a challenge that would make it difficult to determine the ethnicity of the young girl.

"If an individual has been dead for a long time, if that outer layer of skin is lost in the process of decomposition, you can't rely on that to determine someone's ancestral origin," she said. "For adults you can look at specific features of the skull but that same kind of assessment isn't always possible for children, particularly young children."

In a statement from the office of the coroner, representative Stephanie Rea said, "Death investigations – especially complex ones – can take many months."

"The coroner needs to be able to answer five questions to complete an investigation: the identify of the deceased, the date of death, location of death, medical cause of death, and manner of death," she said.

The investigation is ongoing and Glassford said he is determined to find the girls identity.

Can you help Paul Fronczak find his sister?

Jill’s story begins on Oct. 27, 1963, when she and her twin brother were born at a hospital in New Jersey. The babies, a boy and a girl, were named Jack and Jill Rosenthal. At some point between 1963 and 1965, both babies would be separated from one another. Baby Jack was left abandoned and what happened to baby Jill would remain a mystery. In fact, no one even realized that Jill disappeared until years later, when her twin brother gained national attention for his own unbelievable story. Robert Ronald “Bobbie” Soden is the fourth of the “Fort Myers Eight” to be identified. The other four men remain listed as John Does.

Authorities believe alleged serial killer Daniel Conahan Jr. is responsible for the deaths of Soden and the other seven men, as well as several murders in Charlotte County known as the “Hog Trail murders.” Conahan, 68, has been in prison since 1996, when he was arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Richard Allen Montgomery.

According to a Fort Myers police spokesperson, Soden’s identification is the result of Fort Myers cold case detectives’ work with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Parabon Nanolabs, a Virginia-based lab that offers forensic genealogy services to law enforcement agencies.

Genealogists were able to build a family tree for Soden, previously known only as Victim H, based upon DNA extracted from his remains.

“Based on the data that was searched, a family tree was developed that identified the probable identity of the person,” police officials said. “Cold case investigators then located direct relatives of the potential victim and completed direct comparison DNA with (the Department of Law Enforcement).

“That comparison confirmed the identity of Soden.”

Soden, who had been missing since 1996, was 30 when friends and family last heard from him. Detectives have been able to tie him to the Fort Myers area, but family members have been found in New Jersey, North Carolina and Washington, authorities said.
