Finders Keepers Records Behold Finders Keepers, a British record label, 40 years in the making, introducing fans of psychede As corny as it sounds, it’s a family.

Nearly two decades old, Finders Keepers Records, as an active independent archival collective, could arguably stand up as one of the most experienced music institutions operating in the realms of what some still call “The Record Industry”. With a discography of sounds that span over sixty calendar years from over forty different countries the “company” (that we prefer to consider as a society) man

aged to quickly redefine its original perception as a simple reissue label within its first fledgling months by digging deeper into global pop history – liberating years of previously unreleased music and personifying, re-establishing and integrating lost artists into a fresh, sociable, alternative musical landscape. In reality the founders of Finders Keepers have been releasing independent records (as in the round plastic things) for over twenty years (a longer lifespan than most major label executives) and been involved in over one thousand releases in a wide range of multidisciplinary capacities. Still manned on a daily basis by its founding members, Finders Keepers was formed with frontline experience gleaned from Andy Votel’s fiercely independent Twisted Nerve Records (Badly Drawn Boy’s first label) combined with Doug Shipton’s experience at Cherry Red Records (DIY pioneers). Abetted with reputations as multi-faceted DJs, designers, writers, radio presenters, record producers and above all obscure vintage record collectors Shipton and Votel combined forces on a short-run commissioned label called Delay 68 before branching out alone under the name Finders Keepers (a moniker taken from an acclaimed Votel world psych compilation from the mid-1990s). With commitment, constancy and longevity as one of their leading attributes the Finders Keepers team have managed to garner a reputation of integrity, deep knowledge and quality unrivalled by a growing influx of contenders of whom FK and its global family pre-date and often outlast. Collaborations with well known creative types like The Gaslamp Killer, David Holmes, Gruff Rhys, Pamela des Barres, Jarvis Cocker, Maxine Peake, St. Etienne, Malcolm Mooney and Belle & Sebastian stand as flattering testimonies to our catalogue and projects with kindred labels like Now Again, Sublime Frequencies, Stargate, Roundtable, Fat City and Paradise Bangkok echo a mutual respect for the those willing to get their hands dirty. Meanwhile, hip hop artists like Mad Lib, Erykha Badu and members of The Wu Tang Clan take welcome plunders into our sample bank and DJ jaunts with Edan, Demdike Stare, Cut Chemist, Cherrystones, Egon and Elijah Wood make weekends more enjoyable. With a virtually unblinkered approach to “original” music Finders Keepers defies and redefines genres from one release to the next, pre-empting record collector trends and recontextualising music from disparate locations uniting lost music and found artists most of which sound more current and challenging than today’s most experimental heroes. Expanding the parameters of its original psychedelic/global funk module, Finders Keepers now boasts a range of essential sub-labels under its well-travelled wings, including a dedicated new wave/disco/punk label called Cache Cache and a pre-pop avant/jazz/noise label called Cacophonic. In the interests of consistency, Finders Keepers still balances its penchant for failed and misunderstood European pop music AND untravelled/condemned psych rock from the East with contemporary output on Twisted Nerve, Battered Ornaments and specifically feminine oriented Bird records (run by established songwriter Jane Weaver). Other than that, if you just want records with “heavy drums and electronic effects” or “Czech soundtracks”, well, you’ve come to the right place too. Quite unlike any other archival labels before us Finders Keepers also boasts what could be described as a “label roster” with many multiple LP releases of lost music from repeat artists who have in time become trusted friends. Atari music composer Suzanne Ciani, Gainsbourg collaborator Jean-Claude Vannier, Swiss electronic pioneer Bruno Spoerri, Polish soundtracker Andrzej Korzynski, French conceptual disco monster Jean-Pierre Massiera and many more almost form an alternative historical musical universe that never quite existed the first time round. Needless to say all of these collaborative friendships have readily led to live interactions and theatrical performances including the very first-ever stage show of Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire De Melody Nelson (with original orchestrator and rhythm section) Vannier’s L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouche, Spoerri’s Lilith and Massiera’s Horrific Child (not to mention associated studio collaborations and improvised tours). The legacy preservation of other Finders Keepers artists has had further cultural impact via the media. The label’s committed series of Welsh protest pop music from the early 70s lead to a primetime BBC documentary called Free Wales Harmony (presented by Andy Votel) telling the first hand stories of a previously undocumented political movement where pop music successfully led to political reform for a minority culture. Our releases of unknown and banned pre-revolution Iranian pop music was also met with great critical acclaim and our ongoing series of untravelled music from communist Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia shares discography space with the lost cinematic music of Lollywood and Kollywood for these first time pressings. Catering to the music lovers, the DJs, the collectors and inquisitive minds alike, Finders Keepers’ commitment to facsimile vinyl editions (mastered from the most authentic sources) as well as CD and digital releases with extensive sleeve notes can range from limited runs of one hundred cassettes to releases that continue to be re-pressed into the thousands without slowing down… the ideal Finders Keepers music is timeless and continues to resonate regardless of its release date, and hopefully we will say the same in coming months about our scheduled DVDs, spoken word records and books (our previous release of the original 1966 Wicker Man story Ritual is another high point thus far). For many onlookers, on paper, Finders Keepers shouldn’t work. Lost or misunderstood records in foreign languages with no available market research make for risky business… But if the record fits this bill, FK is generally the perfect home, providing a new context and a positive environment for good music, regardless of its background or cloudy history. Our modus operandi “Making Global Music Local” and “Breaking Boundaries Before Breaking Even” clearly illustrate Finders Keepers’ ongoing commitment to the artists we believe in, and on behalf of the listener and the musician Finders Keepers will keep digging deeper channels to connect your equally adventurous minds and help those around us to do the same. Previously referred to as “an accidental world music label with a punk attitude”, Finders Keepers strive to continue to cross pollinate strains of music from genre-less pop cultures, constructing new vantage points and even trying to right some of the wrongs made by the archaic music industry the first time round. Assuming the role of the librarian, the janitor and the music teacher, while keeping a close eye on the lost property box. A decade later, Finders Keepers has learned that it’s nicer to share.

Celebrating Finders Keepers and Early Futures second venture into the vaults of David Wertman and the New Life Trio legacy, this very special edition revisits the same archival aesthetic with this sturdy uniformed vintage phonograph library edition. Presented in specially sourced, custom dyed European rayon book cloth, with stitched seams and brass corner clasps, this very limited edition comes complete with hand-pulled screenprinted metallic graphics to provide stylish continuity alongside our previous, much coveted, Wertman deluxe edition.

Available to pre-order exclusively through the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp on 3pm (BST) Friday 6th October. Strictly one per person.

As one of the three inaugural 1976 releases to ignite the mythical Mustevic Music catalogue, David Wertman’s elusive Kara Suite LP was the first record to turn jazz drummer Steve Reid’s vanity imprint into a bona fide cooperative record label with a multi-artist repertoire. Entrusting his own bass player with the limelight, Reid’s unlikely A&R decision would typify his oblique strategies and challenge the common perception of a soloist within jazz’s shifting landscape.

Drawing few comparisons amongst independent label releases of the time, save for rare standalone LP by Ronnie Boykins (ESP 1975) and cellist Abdul Wadoud (Bisharra 1978), Wertman’s only solo album (preceding his work with Sun Ensemble and The New Life Trio) combined frenetic bow work, intricate spiritual exchanges and raucous rock solid cyclic riffage to underpin his own compositional complexities. Providing a platform for first-time players like Richard Schatzberg (French horn) and future avant jazz punk participant Ken Simon (tenor/soprano sax) Kara Suite provides an early indication of Wertman’s multilayered and non-conformist blueprint from which the hallowed New Life Trio would eventually illuminate. The album’s off-kilter commitment is further cemented by the inclusion of worldly free jazz luminary Charles Tyler (alto sax) and the naturalistic back-beat of Steve Reid himself to complete the dream team – albeit a sleepless one, on account of this one-off quintet’s wide-eyed innovation.

Presented in four parts, Kara Suite documents Wertman’s very first musical directorial commitment to vinyl, preceded only by guest appearances, months earlier, on Steve Reid’s classic Rhythmatism and the ultra-rare The Universal Jazz Symphonette LP which chronicles Wertman’s deep-end New York baptism alongside Billy Bang and Earl Freeman before his relocation to Northampton forged this unique and oblique chapter in America’s independent jazz narrative. As one of the final pages to be turned in the Mustevic reappraisal legacy this album perhaps remains the best kept secret for aficionados who actively choose to blur the lines between spiritual jazz and free jazz with no discrimination against art rock and the genre that might soon be christened punk (but not as we know it).

Finally resurrected via the Finders Keepers/Early Future unison, complete with full cooperation and sleeve note narration by David’s partner Lynne Meryl, it might come as little surprise that amongst these pillars of alternative, privately pressed jazz is a story that also intertwines names such as Alice Cooper, Archie Shepp, KISS and DJ Shadow and many mutating musical genres that have made this music so hard to pin down over the subsequent five decades.

Available to pre-order through the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp on 3pm (BST) Friday 6th October.

The fifth installment of Finders Keepers' very special and strictly limited run of totally unreleased master tapes cut directly to real-time lathe editions complete with silk screened and stitched artwork will be available on the FKR stall tomorrow at the inaugural The Mega Record Fair @ Project House in Leeds (Sunday 20th August). A miraculous discovery for fans of French jazz and the spiritual intercommunal sound we’ve come to know and love. With the master of the genre at the helm, François Tusques heads-up this mythical recording made at the Dunois Theatre (France) in 1981 to wave goodbye to their long-running friend and collaborator Bernard “Beb" Guérin (weeks after his tragic passing). Featuring a classic cast of French free jazzers from the Actuel/Futura/Palm wonder years, the session comprises of Jacques Thollot, Jacques Coursil, Itaru Oki and Bernard Vitet - as well as other unknown participants lost in the haze of this heady session. This tangible hand-cut artifact also proceeds the forthcoming liberation of a new lost ark of recently rediscovered François Tusques live recordings which Finders Keepers are working closely with the artist to resuscitate in the coming months. From one of our favourite artists on the label, and a true pioneer in the progression of European jazz and spiritual noise, comes this latest edition of our collectable lathe cut global jazz releases, housed in stunning hand-stitched and screen-printed artwork (in both purple and black), and a discography that includes Masahiko Sato (Tokyo), Durul Gence (Ankara) and Gary Sloan (Alaska).

Available via the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp at 3pm (BST) Friday 7th April Strictly limited to one per person.

Fans of Finders Keepers handmade limited editions have been patiently waiting for this one for some time, and finally the label’s much revered Zdeněk Liška catalogue gets the bespoke treatment designed in celebration of the legendary composer's 100th birthday. Combining three classic releases that exemplify the composer’s broad range of talents and forward-thinking methods and applications, this very limited collection comes in unique screen-printed uniformed colour coded packaging, housed in stitched seam custom sleeves and presented in a hand-printed cotton bag complete with a booklet and extensive sleeve notes and artwork. Those who champion Czech folk horror such as Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders and Morgiana will find much to cross-reference here with the combination of lush orchestral and fragile crystalised vocals alongside found sounds and primitive electronics. The soundtracks to the hallucinogenic monochrome milestone The Cremator, the stunning psychedelic take on The Little Mermaid (aka Malá mořská víla) and the truly mind-blowing future music of the Czech sci-fi anomaly Ikarie XB1, will certainly expose the uninitiated to one of the 20th century’s most important composers who, despite his time obscured by the iron Curtain, can now be savoured and widely celebrated alongside the likes of Ennio Morricone, Jean-Claude Vannier, Francois De Roubaix. Bruno Nicolai and Andrzej Korzyński.

Available via the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp at 3pm (BST) Friday 7th April Strictly limited to one per person.

Finders Keepers and Kinoteka Film Festival, in conjunction with The Polish Cultural Institute, present a very special screening of Andrzej Żuławski’s controversial masterpiece The Devil to mark the release of the Andrzej Korzyński's long lost score.

The surface plot of Diabeł is easy to describe. Set during Prussian army's invasion to Poland in 1793, a rich but dishevelled young man called Jakub (played by Leszek Teleszynski) is rescued from prison by a mysterious man in a black cloak who asks for a list of "fellow conspirators”. The cloaked man then takes Jakub on an eye-opening visit around his war-torn country to find his mother running a brothel, his father sleeping with his sister, and his beloved fiancée (psychologically distracted into a mute state) forcibly married to his best friend. Alongside a cast of other bizarre fantasy characters, the cloaked man casually hands Jakub a switchblade every time he loses his temper in what finally plays out as a mixture of a pre-Dickensian Christmas Carol on a wintery yellow brick road (on acid), filmed by Vertigo sleeve designer Keef McMillan using Lucio Fulci’s and Dario Argento's prop box complete with a Polski krautrock soundtrack filtered through a Mogadon Big M**f. But back in 1972, under the beady eye of communist censors, it wouldn't take a switch blade to cut through the surface and expose this glaring allegory about Poland's contemporary politics, which of course lead to the permanent banning until the event of the fall of communism in the late 1980s. Lurking behind Żuławski's allegory are the well-documented, real-life events of March 1968, which started with the sudden banning of the classic romantic play Dziady (and its potential anti-Soviet references) before spiralling into what would become known as the 1968 Polish political crisis. Diabeł drew parallels with the student riots and violent protests that were encouraged/manipulated by minister of the Interior (and head of police) Mieczysław Moczar in order to usurp the Communist Party's first secretary, Władysław Gomułka while he was out of the country. Thus metaphorically passing around a loaded gun, or, as Żuławski's illustrates, a razor blade. In the keen eyes of the censors the parallels with the events of March 1968 were undeniable and they instantly recognised similarities between the persuasive mysterious cloaked officer of the film and the real life anti-Semitic Mieczysław Moczar and his underhand ulterior motives. Hardened by simultaneous world events, especially the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia and the Warsaw Pact, the censorship procedures in 1972 saw tighter thumbscrews on film, theatre and literature, leaving a film like Diabeł in limbo for over fifteen years.

Following the screening your very own Andy Votel and Doug Shipton will playing a Polish only vinyl DJ set until late.

28/11/2022

As one of Finders Keepers Records final releases for 2022, emerging from deep beneath the snow drifts comes this mind-blowing 1977 slice of unreleased inter-communal electronic jazz from Alaska. Taken directly from restored session tapes from the vault of local jazz scene pillar and early synthesiser obsessive Gary Sloan, this is one of a small handful of audio documents that captures multiple players from the vibrant Anchorage jazz scene, which comprised groups such as Clone and Free Spirit before their own private-press vinyl and cassette industry disappeared into relative obscurity. For fans of head-nod jazz rock and synth-ridden fusion as heard on certain records by COS, Faust, Marc Moulin, Mike Nock, Toolshed, Ex Ovo Pro and Comet Is Coming, this previously unheard archive recording will certainly not disappoint. Pressed on just 50 hand-cut lathes, complete with screen printed and stitched custom artwork.

This exclusive issue of the track E tai daotion (which loosely translates to Many Hands, One Mind) was made for the bi-annual Record Planet record fair in Holland, but with a tight deadline coupled with its bespoke nature meant a very small handful remained in the Finders Keepers office before assembly which we are now making available exclusively via the Finders Keepers webshop and Bandcamp page. If the response to our previous limited jazz lathes by Masahiko Sato and Durul Gence is anything to go by, copies of this very special edition will be rehoused very quickly…. so don't hibernate!

Bound in secrecy. Bound in mystery. Now bound in faux leather and tough cotton. Yes, it’s another Finders Keepers special edition, annointing another holy grail discovery to its highest macabre and monarchical status… with an interactive twist. The hooded cult of crooked politicians, royal ne’er-do-wells and general corruptors of power and privilege provide the underlying narrative of this 1966 witchy crime Euro sleaze which demanded a unique soundtrack by a great experimental mind. Up steps Swiss medical scholar an electronic jazz pioneer Bruno Spoerri for his big screen debut and the rest is history, or better still, phantom funk folklore! A would-be doppelgänger to the likes of Dracula’s Music Cabinet and Mad Monster Party including an added burst of plundering Sun Ra synth and am-dram Don Cherry Druidic drones, this obscure soundtrack album is finally excavated from the Spoerri vault and packaged in fine robes like the hooded cult at the centre of the plot. Disguised In red mottled pleather with bespoke eye holes this limited edition include a custom printed insert with moving eye feature to reveal with actress or composer before you delve into a written interview (exclusive to this format) and rare images and trivia from the original film. Clearly one of the labels finest special editions thus far, this edition represents a sacred jewel in Bruno’s discography, not unlike the stolen emeralds which green light the murderous motives of the strangler in the tower.

Available to pre-order Friday 4th November at 3pm (GMT) via the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp page. Special editions are strictly limited to one per person.

The first progressive girl group of the French Occitan language pop scene bring you folk funk, sun-baked bossa, Coltrane jazz and their own brand of p***y “Dizco rural” against an untouched French Balearic backdrop spanning the late 70s and 80s.

If even the most assiduous of European record collectors consider the Occitan language music scene to be France’s best-kept secret then it’s as fair to say that the incredible multifaceted recordings of langue d’oc prog girl group Lei Chapacans has spent the last four decades hiding in plain sight. In all fairness this overlooked treasure chest of minority language excursions into folk funk, Balearic, bossa, John Coltrane penned jazz, baroque psych, Palestinian poetry, comedic synth skits (and even the rawest form of femme-fronted multiingual p***y disco) has been stowed away in inconspicuous photographic record sleeves, falsely evoking something closer to contemporary C&W while oft-misplaced in record shop cassette racks alongside “traditional” spoken-word and scholastic albums. So for the uninitiated, don’t be too hard on yourself. The fun starts here. For those who are familiar with the rare and sought-after one-off solo album by Occitan singer Miquela and have craved for more, then you’ve come to exactly the right place. Lei Chapacans (a name that roughly translates to The Vagabonds) is the all-girl vocal group assembled by Miquela herself just two years after her debut release, having toured the word and snubbed major label record deal offers with a steadfast allegiance to the protection of the Occitan language in which this album is primarily penned and performed (minus a small amount of German and sarcastic English in one rebellious instance). For European collectors with a penchant for French savoir faire, but have further yearnings for folkloric femme funk, then it’s time to look towards the Occitan sunset where you will meet Lolo, Miquela, Sophie, Irena and Denise.

These amazing, and undeniably culturally important recordings might have taken some time to find a wider audience, but for music lovers, crate diggers and vinyl vultures alike there are still a lot of tasty morsels out there to be scavenged and devoured, ask any self-respecting Chapacan and they’ll concur wholeheartedly.

Continuing in our series of limited special editions of previously unreleased archival recordings, Finders Keepers is proud to present a hand made edition of 50 toile de jute bound sleeves with embroided traditional Occitan landscape insignia.
