"I feel like a pupil in the changing of light. I widen and narrow incessantly. I know no rigidness, no indifference,” writes the Italian feminist writer and art critic Carla Lonzi in 1978. Please join us this Wednesday at FIDMarseille for the world premiere of Constanze Ruhm's new feature film "È a questo punto che nasce il bisogno di fare storia", for cinema of dark shards that hold light, of no indifference in the face of violence and oppression, and of renewed approaches to feminist historiography. Constanze Ruhm writes in 2023: "The tear that Lonzi sheds in her lost film turns into an optical device that sharpens her eye. A woman’s gaze on history rendered more acute by a tear now lets the images of that history, images defined by the absence of women, come to the fore in liberating yet also dismaying clarity. Later on, she averts her eye from it (“one must leave men to their own devices”) and turns her attention to another history, other images: “È a questo punto che nasce il bisogno di fare storia.” It is at this point that the desire to write history arises, a history of women, to find the images for it in the archives, the historical documents, and the present and, if need be, to invent them." Co-production of Bathazara Films and Stenar Projects.

Very happy to share today's announcement that the world premiere of the feature documentary "Resonance Spiral" by Filipa César, Marinho de Pina et al will be at Berlinale Forum / Forum Expanded this February. “During the selection process”, comments Forum’s new section head Barbara Wurm, “it was fascinating to see how many films attempted to approach the big themes of the present (...) by simultaneously focusing on edification and enlightenment, reflection and empathy. (...) Current films examining post-colonialism are placing a focus on humanity instead of destruction and relationships instead of solitude.” More news to follow soon. After 4 days, leaving excited and with the fullest of hearts. V-F-X Ljubljana in its 3rd edition at Slovenska kinoteka has articulated a program that not only reflects on experimental cinema practices past and present but offers glimpses of things to come. Deborah Stratman’s “Last Things” couldn’t have had a more perfect crowd, screen and sound system(!) for its Slovenian premiere (another local date in June coming soon so stay tuned and maybe pack the swimsuit).

Sincere thanks to all the glorious team members for the hard work and exceptional hospitality.

You’ll never walk alone! (even during Eurovision:).

We’re delighted with best short film award for Deborah Stratman’s Last things, our co-production at this last weekend. Thanks to the jury and their to-the-point words: “Brevity is virtue and one seldom exercised at that. The wealth of academic, scientific and literary references that make up this film would be enough to fuel several films at once, but this one darts between them and makes them flow together with gentle, unostentatious confidence in its own magpie logic. Affect and sensuality can also be directed via the mind and echo all the louder when treated as such.” And special thanks to all the partners who made this intercontinental featurette possible and a joy to produce. .fr

"I am most known as a filmmaker because I’ve been making films longer than everything else, and because filmmaking can combine so many different interests that I have. I really love the sculpture of time. So working with pressure and volume, through temporality. I really feel sometimes more like a sculptor than a filmmaker. A sculptor who happens to work with time."

The first published interview with Deborah Stratman about her new film, Last Things, by the lovely people at Tenk who have supported the film and provided post studios for it. Also, our festival excitement starts this January at Sundance Film Festival with the American premiere of the film - for info on how to attend in person or online Jan 19-29 visit festival.Sundance.org. We're delighted to share that "Last Things", the new film by Deborah Stratman, has its world premiere at Berlinale Forum / Forum Expanded. Co-produced by Pythagoras Films (US), Elinka Films (FR) and Stenar Projects (PT), it is Stratman's first longer form after her revered feature "The Illinois Parables", in 2017. The co-production had its initial spurs between 2018's Doc's Kingdom in Arcos de Valdavez and 2020's On & For Production and Distribution session in Lofoten Islands, and has crossed territories beyond them in the two years ahead. This is the 10th Portuguese co-production at Forum Expanded since 2014, and the 4th by Stenar Projects at that section of Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival - after Emily Wardill's "Night For Day", and Ana Vaz's "Apiyemiyekî?" and "13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird". Please join us in Berlin in February and say hi!

CAMPO DE TREINO: O QUE FAZER JUNTO?
18-22 Outubro

Wonderfully bright review of the film NIGHT FOR DAY by Emily Wardill in the latest Artforum:
"Part documentary, part speculative fiction, Night for Day builds on interviews with [Isabel do] Carmo. She details her life underground and the often overlooked role women played in the antifascist resistance, which intensified as the regime began to flail during the years of the colonial wars (1961 to 1974). She speaks of arrests and torture, and of how the women would, even under fake identities, develop real friendships. But Wardill knows there is no such thing as a true story—all stories are fictive, whatever their subject matter. The artist fictionalizes the transition from fascism to liberal democracy as a generational shift, narrated in a text overlay as a mother-son relationship. (...)"
