Our Story

Compass is a joint project of the Tocqueville Forum at Northern Illinois University and the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University.

At Compass, we offer a venue for undergraduate students to publish essays that resonate with current American political issues understood in the broad contexts of political philosophy, history, literature, and culture. We encourage submissions from across academic disciplines, employing various methods of analysis. We are committed to publishing well-argued and thoughtful essays by undergraduate scholars who are studying the principles and practices of American democracy.

Compass is a joint project of the Tocqueville Forum at Northern Illinois University and the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University. The journal means to provide junior researchers with a platform through which to participate meaningfully in public discourse. We help undergraduate authors edit their term papers or theses into shorter, pithier works that communicate their novel, well-reasoned ideas to a general public. We hope that participating in an exchange of politically relevant ideas anchored in thoughtful intellectual analysis links our authors’ love of learning to efficacious civic engagement through public debate.

The online platform facilitates our mission to convey excellent undergraduate research to a broader interested public. Our authors come from diverse institutions, from top research institutions, to regional state schools, and private liberal arts colleges. Excellent undergraduate research goes on at all institutions, across the United States and beyond. Our “call for papers” is ongoing; please encourage your students to submit their excellent papers for review.
