BAE Systems to advance integrated circuit technology for the space industry

WASHINGTON - BAE Systems has been selected by the Department of Defense (DoD) to qualify a new generation of integrated circuit technology for use in the harsh environment of space. The new 12 nanometer technology uses a smaller feature size that provides a leap forward in space-based computing compared to current 45 nanometer technology.

“This selection makes BAE Systems the premier radiation-hardened integrated circuit supplier for space customers,” said Ricardo Gonzalez, director of Space Systems at BAE Systems. “Moving from a 45 nanometer design to a 12 nanometer design enables more transistors to fit on each chip at reduced power consumption per operation, which increases functionality – an important factor in space vehicles, where volume and power are limited resources.”

Learn about security and the DevSecOps platform

Now available for on demand viewing with bonus DevSecOps whitepaper for reference!

NASHUA, N.H. - DevSecOps - short for development, security, and operations - is the convergence of IT operations, software development and delivery, and security.

DevOps is enabling faster deployment of more secure software to devices by tightly coupling development and operations functions. However, to ensure security, the DevOps pipeline itself must be secure. At the intelligent edge, mission-critical systems require that security is built into the development process for a true DevSecOps environment.

Only 8% of organizations have secured at least 75% of their cloud-native apps using DevSecOps (Enterprise Strategy Group).

This webinar covers new security approaches for the emerging intelligent edge; methods for full lifecycle security for mission-critical systems; must-have development tools for security validation; and lessons learned in the journey to build security into a DevSecOps environment.

This on-demand webcast is presented by Arlen Baker, the principal security architect at Wind River Systems, based in Alameda Calif., and hosted by Military & Aerospace Electronics' editor-in-chief John Keller. Click below to register and learn more about this crucial topic!

ABB and Lilium team up on charging infrastructure for regional air travel

ZURICH - ABB E-mobility and Lilium N.V. positioned to be a global leader in regional electric air mobility, have announced plans for ABB to provide the charging infrastructure for Lilium’s high speed regional air network, scheduled for commercial launch in 2024. Lilium has announced planned launch networks in Florida, Germany, and Brazil.

As part of the agreement, ABB will develop, test and supply the MegaWatt fast charging infrastructure necessary for the quick turnaround times needed for electric aviation. The ABB charging points are designed to be capable of fully charging batteries in approximately 30 minutes, and charging up to 80% in 15 minutes, enabling the 20-25 flights per aircraft per day planned across Lilium’s global vertiport network. The initial range of a 7-Seater Lilium Jet is expected to be 155 miles with a cruise speed of 175mph.

In orbit: space continues to heat up for commercial and defense markets

NASHUA, N.H. - Commercial companies, military branches, and countries have their eyes on the skies - or rather, what's beyond our atmosphere here on terra firma.

The newest branch of the United States armed forces, the Space Force, notes that "Space affects almost every part of our daily lives and is fundamental to our economic system. For example, satellites not only power the GPS technology that we use daily, but allow us to surf the web and call our friends, enable first responders to communicate with each other in times of crisis, time-stamp transactions in the world financial market, and even allow us to use credit cards at gas pumps."
