8th June 1967, off the coast of Sinai in the Mediterranean, Israeli fighter jets attacked the USS Liberty wounding over 200 Americans and killing over 30 military personnel. After years of suppression in the media the event reached the public eye.
In October 2007 the Chicago Tribune published a special report into the attack on the Liberty. It contained numerous previously unreported quotes from the military personnel on the Liberty who possessed first hand knowledge of the event. Many quotes within it directly contradict the NSA’s position; that the NSA never intercepted the communications of the attacking Israeli pilots. Reports not only show the transcripts exist, but they show the Israeli’s knew they were attacking an American naval vessel.
American Intelligence officials dispute Israel’s explanation of the event.
Secretary of State, Dean Rusk said at the time, “I never believed Israel’s explanation for the attack. I don’t believe them to this day. The attack was outrageous.”
The event is known as the deadliest attack on Americans, by an ally, in history.
