✨We're very excited about all the Arthur Russell events coming up on both coasts next week!

NYC: On Friday July 12th, the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park will feature a special evening of free programming curated by Dada Strain to celebrate the release of TRAVELS OVER FEELING. Paying homage to Russell’s timeless genre-blending work, the acclaimed Wordless Music Orchestra, conducted by Bill Ruyle, will perform the 1983 album Tower of Meaning — in its New York premiere. The evening will kick off with a DJ set from the multifaceted music and nightlife project Love Injection and will close out with a DJ set by NY dance music legend François K. S/O to BRIC and Celebrate Brooklyn for partnering with us to create such an amazing event!

PDX: Happening simultaneously on July 12th, our friends at Mississippi Records are presenting an evening of books, film, and music at the landmark Hollywood Theatre — featuring the films Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell by Matt Wolf and Terrace of Unintelligibility, a video by Phill Niblock. The evening will include live tributes from Harlan Silverman, Dragging an Ox through Water, Skyler Pia, and Half-Shadow, plus a discussion between MR’s Eric Isaacson and Arthur Russell’s archivist, Steve Knutson of Audika Records. Proceeds from the evening to benefit Janus Youth in Portland for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness.

NYC: On Sunday July 14th, join author Richard King as part of “Readings at Parkside” presented by Tent Editions as he reads from TRAVELS OVER FEELING at Parkside Lounge in the Lower East Side. Come through for the rare opportunity to experience excerpts of the thoughtful texts and extensive original research that went into this landmark publication from the author who assembled them.

Copies of TRAVELS OVER FEELING will be available at all events. We can't wait to see you there!

When JEB (Joan E. Biren) and her community made these photos in the 1970s, there was almost no representation of le***an life in the mainstream media. Fifty years later, we are proud to work with her as she continues to present these images to an ever-growing audience. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights, during Pride Month and every day of the year. ✨

On July 12th, the Lena Horne bandshell in Prospect Park will feature a special evening of free programming curated by Dada Strain to celebrate the release of TRAVELS OVER FEELING: ARTHUR RUSSELL, A LIFE. Paying homage to Arthur’s timeless genre-blending work, the acclaimed Wordless Music Orchestra, conducted by Bill Ruyle, will perform the 1983 album Tower of Meaning — in its New York premiere. The evening will kick off with a DJ set from the multifaceted music and nightlife project Love Injection and will close out with a DJ set by NY dance music legend François K.

We’ll be there with books and author Richard King will be in attendance, both onstage and off. There is so much more to say about this event, so stay tuned for updates — we can’t wait to celebrate Arthur and his work with you. ✨🌹🎻

“This book is an attempt to trace a journey through the archives of that singular life. . . . The vigor and intensity of Arthur’s creative process are visible on the page, as is a palpable sense of industriousness and, more occasionally, frustration. Rather than make sense of the creative decisions Arthur made, the papers demonstrate that a definitive portrait of Arthur Russell is an unrealistic proposition. He was an artist capable of writing folkish, reflective songs of Blakean childlike wonder, who could also write about s*x with the same purposefulness, candor and authority as Prince or Betty Davis." —Richard King, from the introduction

Over the past decade, artist Emma Kohlmann has harnessed the expressive possibilities of watercolor to develop an astonishing and intimate practice. In the resounding fluidity of her paintings, Kohlmann maps the lineaments and concavities of embodied moments with exquisite sensitivity, celebrating a sensuality freed from analysis and disabusing gender and the human body of their exhausted mythologies.

We’re pleased to announce WATERCOLORS, a survey of an artist working intuitively to generate representative possibilities that are playfully otherworldly and resolutely, thrillingly free.

WATERCOLORS is available today exclusively on our webshop and everywhere else on April 2nd.

To celebrate the release, we’re offering 200 books with a limited edition 8″ × 8″ silkscreen print, hand-selected by the artist. Each print uses an eleven-color process beautifully reproduced on 250gsm Stonehenge paper by our friends at Du-Good Press. All prints are signed and numbered and will ship along with the book.

🧄🫑🧅 In celebration of the fifteen year anniversary of Anthology’s sister company Mexican Summer, BE PATIENT: AN ANTHOLOGY COOKBOOK is a gathering of recipes from nearly fifty artists, authors, and friends of the label and publisher.

Alongside a hand-marbled cover by Maggie Paxton and rich illustrations by Alex Tults, the book invites readers to simmer on recipes as metaphysical meditations, one-sided conversations, introspective musings, and outright rants. From the straightforward to the surreal, from the indecently delicious to the profoundly inedible, BE PATIENT stretches the definition of what we’ve been “cooking” to accommodate the spirit as much as the body.

"EVIDENCE FOR CONTACT moves briskly through Grimes’s voluminous output of 21st-century work. A few themes emerge: grids, which he fills with black gesso for landscapes that recall a crossword puzzle’s prompt for answers, the fiddly formations of Tetris and early digital animation; binary code, whose zeroes and ones form both ominous data fields and friendly living figures; and an interest in portraiture that appears less about capturing some “truth” of the subject and more about amassing a community of fellow travelers. Asserting the presence of believers in his paintings is also urgent."

—Surface Mag, 2023

“This book, like the art practice it documents, is a testament to those possibilities, but it is also a reassurance: even if, despite the overwhelming odds, the aliens do not exist among the star fields of the cosmos, they have found a home in the works of Ken Grimes.”
— Seth Shostak (Senior Astronomer, SETI)

The paintings of Ken Grimes are strikingly honest, deceptively simple, and decidedly interstellar. Over several decades, Grimes has developed his singular style—using text, numbers, outer space iconography, and geometric shapes painted primarily in stark black and white—to prompt his audience to consider the possibilities and implications of alien contact with earth. We’re excited to unveil EVIDENCE FOR CONTACT, a catalog of the endless variations on a theme produced by an absolutely unique painter during a lifetime devoted to the mysteries of extraterrestrial life.

EVIDENCE FOR CONTACT is available exclusively on our webshop today. Worldwide on Oct. 24th.

🔮🌲 In 1973, artist and illustrator Ed Emberley had been prolifically creating children’s books for more than a decade when he conceived his most ambitious project to date. SUPPOSE YOU MET A WITCH, featuring Emberley’s signature style at its most lavish, is considered by many to be the beloved artist’s masterpiece. Sadly, the book was not a big hit at the time, and has gone on to become one of the hardest-to-find works in Emberley’s catalogue. We are delighted to have the chance to reintroduce it to a new audience.

Packed with extraordinary imagery and rich with visual wit, SUPPOSE YOU MET A WITCH lets us all experience what it must be like to be under a witch’s spell. Reissued for the first time since 1973, the book uses Ian Serraillier’s striking poem and Ed Emberley’s psychedelic illustrations to show us what happens when two clever and resourceful children encounter a witch in the darkest part of the wood.

⚓️ A NOTE ON THE ARTWORK

The lines and brush strokes of Elizabeth Peyton light up a world where at times fluorescent colors sit on top of our natural dimness as if to suggest the color of feeling—the spell work of the inner eye.

It is a world in which history lives right next to the present, where fiction neighbors the factual, the dead walking the same hallways as the living. There’s an immaculate fascination and empathy with them all. An inherent romantic will that insists on giving the necessary attention to what matters, at once operatic and tender in its scope.

One thing that always captured me in Elizabeth’s portraits are the eyes of her subjects. It’s as if the world outside the frame of the canvas is somehow mirrored—a drawing with an inner life. It can be gazed into, in the same way that people can be gazed into. Here, the story arches further than what’s on the page. The fairytales are real because we say so.
