Orenda Records Visionary Creative Music
www.orendarecords.com "Orenda Records is a small Southern California label that punches above its weight.

Run by Daniel Rosenboom, its recordings document the creation of a new sound and scene. Call it “Los Angeles Creative Music” if you will. Orenda’s offerings are informed by rock, modern classical, and jazz, and combine these genres in a natural, organic fashion. These are not jazz musicians who dabble in classical or vice-versa. Instead, Orenda’s musicians grew up in a post-Braxton era where music

al styles are viewed on a continuum rather than as individual silos of expression."

Saxophonist/composer Joe Santa Maria’s new release “Echo Deep” is out today! [link in bio]

Echo Deep is a cross-genre instrumental album that depicts dreams and cinematic scenes from Santa Maria’s memories.

“Scenes from the album are drawn from my earliest memories of sound, beauty, and humor as well as from challenging and triumphant moments in my teenage and post-college years,” Santa Maria explains. “Travels to Indonesia, Mexico, South America, and a seven-year stint living in Boston and NYC all have scenes to play on this record, which took nearly 10 years from inception to completion. The melodies and rhythms are meant to be cyclical and trancelike.” –Joe Santa Maria

Happy Release Anniversary! For their sophomore release, LA Signal Lab teams up with two of Los Angeles’s premier contemporary duos (Aperture Duo and HOCKET) to explore the intersection of elemental forces, contemporary music, and modern life. Through works inspired by Japanese traditional folk song, modern art, Frankish mythology, Creole fiddling, and prophetic dreams, Water and Power presents an eclectic yet deeply personal vision of music and living, today.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2021, Atticus Reynolds (Drums), featuring Devin Daniels (Alto Saxophone), Aidan Lombard (Trumpet), Jon Hatamiya (Trombone), Max Beck (Bass) and Jordan Reifkind (Guitar), released “Towers,” on Orenda Records.

Towers, the 2nd full-length record from drummer/composer Atticus Reynolds, presents a rich collection of original music written after relocating to Los Angeles in 2017 and joining LA’s new vanguard of emerging jazz improvisers. A collection of disparate musical ideas written since his move, the album was recorded over a two-day period in September 2019 and features some of Reynolds’ close friends and common musical collaborators in Los Angeles, including Devin Daniels on alto saxophone, Aidan Lombard on trumpet, Jon Hatamiya on trombone, Max Beck on bass, and Jordan Reifkind on guitar.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2022, Forest Chorus, featuring Mikko Innanen (Baritone, Alto, Sopranino Saxophones), Seba Saenz (Trumpet), Caleb Veazey (Guitar), Miller Wrenn (Double Bass) and Joonas Leppänenn (Drums), released “Forest Chorus,” on Orenda Records.

Joining together Helsinki-based drummer Joonas Leppänen and saxophonist Mikko Innanen, Los Angeles-based guitarist Caleb Veazey and bassist Miller Wrenn, and Buenos Aires-based trumpeter Seba Saenz, Forest Chorus is a multinational band of composer-improvisers with a sonic palette that reflects their disparate origins. Recorded in rural Finland during a European tour in late 2019, the self-titled debut recording charts an unexpected course through and along the spectrums of acoustic/electronic, predetermined/spontaneous, dense/spacious — together reckless and controlled. Compositions from all five members set the quintet off on a range of energetic investigations and explorations that naturally incline toward narrative, however tangible or abstract.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2022, Esthesis Quartet, featuring Elsa Nilsson (Flutes, FX, Composition), Dawn Clement (Piano, Vocals, Composition), Emma Dayhuff (Bass, Composition), and Tina Raymond (Drums, Composition), released “Esthesis Quartet,” on Orenda Records.

Dismantling conventional instrumentation roles, the band unleashes each members’ bend toward the extemporaneous on this debut statement. Uniting four corners of the United States at the cusp of a lockdown period, Esthesis Quartet features Denver-based pianist Dawn Clement, Swedish-born and New York-based flutist Elsa Nilsson, Chicago-based bassist Emma Dayhuff and LA-based drummer Tina Raymond. The assembly is characterized by an innate fascination with risk, uniting four players who continually re-evaluate their roles as soloists, performers and explorers. With original compositions molded by tactile sensitivity and exploratory improvising, Esthesis Quartet captures the meticulous spirit of collaboration integral to the group’s foundations. The reckless abandon with which the quartet approaches the discovery of new musical landscapes lends an intriguing journey, particularly when flutes and vocals come to the fore.

San Diego percussionist and composer, Nathan Hubbard, culls together his Skeleton Key Orchestra, for their sophomore effort, Furiously Dreaming. Gathering together a staggering 49 of Southern California’s most ambitious creative musicians, this epic 2-disc achievement is a swirling, seductive, mind-bending sonic array mixing avant-garde jazz and electronica, poetry, and quite literally, the music of dreams.

Sibling-driven duoscapes pushing prepared piano and slide guitar into the spiral turbulence of a free jazz new music front - looped, glitched, and morphed tales of surreal subterranean travel.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2018, composer Derrick Skye released “American Mirror,” on Orenda Records, featuring:
SALASTINA MUSIC SOCIETY
Kevin Kumar, Violin I; Maia Jasper White, Violin II; Meredith Crawford, Viola; Yoshika Masuda, Cello
BRIDGE TO EVERYWHERE
Rachel Mellis, Flute/Piccolo; Rachel Iba, Violin; Simone Deleon-Pina, Violin; Nikki Shorts, Viola; Michelle Elliott Rearick, Cello; Mark Gutierrez, Electric Bass; Jaqueline Marshall, Harp; Ian Smith, Piano; Randy Gloss, Percussion I; James Waterman, Percussion II; Derrick Skye, Percussion III; Bridge To Everywhere, Voices

Los Angeles-based composer Derrick Skye could not have chosen a better name for his malleable ensemble, Bridge to Everywhere. The name embodies his compositional and cultural ethos clearly and succinctly. At a time when our society needs bridges more than ever, Spiva’s music connects music from all over the world with his own American identity. His second album, American Mirror, places rhythmic and melodic foundations from West and North Africa, India, Eastern Europe, and Appalachia seamlessly within the realm of modern American classical music. American Mirror proposes that diverse musical cultures can become even more beautiful when they exist and collaborate together. It is a musical metaphor for how disparate segments of American society, which has roots all over the world, can be truly harmonious.

Saxophones - Dan Kaneyuki, Hitomi Oba, Tim McKay
Trumpets - James Blackwell, Tom Terrell, Noah Meites
Vibraphone - Christian Tamburr (3)
Guitar - Brady Cohan (1), Brandon Bae (2,3)

“Nexus Music, Vol. 1 presents my vision of music that combines the inner workings of contemporary classical music with the instrumentation and aesthetics of big band jazz. As an active composer and performer in both fields, I have a unique perspective to add to the ongoing dialogue between these two traditions. Co-produced with my close friend and collaborator, Ross Garren (who has a similarly diverse background), this album came together through years of training and experience in contemporary classical composition, studio and recording skills from producing music for film and television, and most importantly, a network of some of the finest musicians in the world.” – Nick DePinna

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2020, BoorBaar released “Swong,” featuring Cory Beers (Percussion), John Wash IV (Percussion), and Mike Robbins (Percussion), on Orenda Records.

BoorBaar is a remarkable percussion trio featuring Cory Beers (Falsetto Teeth, Cory Beers Cimbalom Band), John Wash IV (Cetus), and Mike Robbins (Eighteen Squared). Circling a formidable combined percussion setup, they perform epic, memorized compositions that draw inspiration from a wide range of influences, from minimalism to metal to percussive traditions from cultures all over the globe. The ensemble formed in 2005 while the trio attended California Institute of the Arts, and over the years they have performed in a variety of settings from underground art shows to collegiate percussion symposiums. But Cory Beers sums up their approach concisely and directly: “we just play the most insane rhythms we can think of, so most folks just ignore us while we’re freaking out in some practice room.”

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2021, Jake Vossler (6-String, 8-String, Baritone Guitars; Prepared Bass; Vocals & Electronics) and Dan Rosenboom (Quartertone Trumpet, Electronics) released “Ceremony,” on Orenda Records.

After a frought year of isolation, long-time collaborators Jake Vossler and Dan Rosenboom reunited to record an entrancing duo album rooted in a fascination with ritual magic. Vossler’s staggering array extended guitar techniques and sonic manipulations, as well as vocal and electronic soundscapes, intertwine with Rosenboom’s mind-bending quartertone trumpet and electronic musings to create a raw, sensational, and utterly transportive meditation recorded entirely live with just 2 microphones, no editing, and only minimal minimal mixing. The resulting album, Ceremony, is an astounding exploration of sound and energy.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2016, Burning Ghosts released “Burning Ghosts,” featuring Daniel Rosenboom (Trumpet), Jake Vossler (Guitars), Richard Giddens (Bass) and Aaron McLendon (Drums), on Orenda Records.

BURNING GHOSTS explodes from the Los Angeles Underground with an expressionist metal-jazz opus that singes the fabric of a fraying American culture. An ambitious and scathing referendum, this eponymous debut comes at a moment when our civic morality and sense of social justice, our communal values and even our very national identity, find themselves under brutal scrutiny. Holding the mirror close and clear, Burning Ghosts is an uncompromising, incendiary artistic response to ubiquitous injustice. This is music without restraint.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2020, Matt Mayhall (Drums) and Dan Rosenboom (Bb Trumpet, C Cornet, Electronics) released “Language,” on Orenda Records.

The association of trumpet and drums is as old as civilization itself. Ancient instruments of both proclamation and celebration, they have evolved together and influenced the development of musical language in tandem. Likewise, throughout the modern history of improvised music, duos of horn players and drummers have stretched the limits of sound and form, and reached for an elemental approach to spontaneous musical conversation. With Language, drummer Matt Mayhall and trumpeter Dan Rosenboom pay homage to this rich tradition championed by many of their respective heroes, and present a stunning duo debut.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2021, Zane Carney Quartet released “Alter Ego,” featuring Zane Carney (Guitar, Writer, Arranger, Produce), Jerry Watts Jr. (Bass, Writer, Arranger), Gene Coye (Drums, Writer, Arranger), and Katisse Buckingham (Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax, Flute, Alto Flute, Writer, Arranger), on Orenda Records.

Guitarist Zane Carney’s new quartet album Alter Ego, featuring Katisse Buckingham (woodwinds), Jerry Watts Jr. (bass), and Gene Coye (drums), embodies an adventurous new wave of free improvisation, along with modal jazz in its most electric, high-octane form. The album features a series of improvised compositions, experiments, and sketches, as well as two rearranged standards. It consists mostly of first takes, with no editing, and aims to subvert convention. In addition, all tracks were mixed from the drummer’s perspective, placing the listener in the middle of the live action, on stage with the group.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2019, Daniel Rosenboom (C Cornet, Bb Trumpet), Jake Vossler (Strat, Baritone Guitars), and Tina Raymond (Drums) released “Trio Subliminal,” on Orenda Records.

Dedicated to fierce, mind-bending improvisation, Trio Subliminal brings together three of Southern California's most inventive improvisers. Featuring Daniel Rosenboom on cornet and trumpet, Jake Vossler on strat and baritone guitars, and Tina Raymond on drums, this bold triumvirate stretches into the subconscious to channel wild expressions and dream-like explorations. Filled with abstract sonics, riling grooves, heavy riffs, and wild virtuosic abandon, Trio Subliminal presents an unrestrained exploration of the subconscious that is as earnest as it is radical.

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2020, Pedja Milutinovic Drumbooty released “Veritas Vincit,” featuring Pedja Milutinovic (drums, vocals, producer), David Binney (saxophone), Luka Ignjatovic (saxophone), Petar Krstajic (bass, keyboards, vocals), Ilija Nikolic (keyboards), Branko Trijic (guitar), Nikola Milenkovic (guitar), Ron Warburg (trumpet), Andrija Gavrilovic (trumpet), Stefan Todorovic Mystee (electronic drums), and Ivana Vukmirovic (vocals), on Orenda Records.

“Pedja Milutinovic is a uniquely skilled, ultra-creative drummer whose playing is full of musical surprises! On his noteworthy debut release Milutinovic combines compositions featuring ensemble interaction/improvisation with simpler, groove oriented tunes, thus creating a balanced mix that is well paced and sonically pleasing. Overall high quality of musicianship is in evidence, while the  telepathic connection between Milutinovic and his sidemen (from years of  playing together in various musical projects) gives this album a potent cohesive force that has become somewhat rare in today's music.”

Happy Release Anniversary! On this day in 2017, Tina Raymond (Drums) released “Left Right Left,” featuring Art Lande (Piano) and Putter Smith (Bass), on Orenda Records.

As a drummer and percussion teacher, I say the words “left” and “right” often. I spend a lot of time thinking and talking about what combinations of “left” and “right” are the most efficient way to execute rhythms. My students and I talk about being left-handed or right-handed and how that characteristic affects the way a musician approaches playing the drums. I am very aware of the bipartisan quality of limbs.
In politics, the terms “left wing” and “right wing” date back to the French Revolution. They referred to the physical location of two opposing parties in relation to the king—either to the left or right of his chair. I like to think there was a recognition of the value of both sides, an understanding that left and right are necessarily attached to the same animal.

Rhythm Real is the brainchild of Los Angeles drummer, bandleader, and music educator . Dean formed the band in August of 2015 as a type of workshop ensemble in order to create a way for a couple of his former middle school music students to gain playing experience after graduating. Since then, Dean Mucetti & Rhythm Real has been bringing together the talents of younger players with more experienced musicians in order to facilitate a collaborative meeting of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and generational backgrounds. Dean would soon invite friends from his college days at the California Institute of the Arts and other musicians he knew in hopes of finding a creative meeting point between the variables of experiences. A consistency with this process of engagement over time eventually resulted in the band playing some of L.A.’s most coveted clubs such as the Baked Potato in Studio City, the Blue Whale in Little Tokyo, the World Stage in Leimert Park, and Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood.

The work in this album would come to be titled ISOLATE//INTEGRATE. This is in part to reflect upon the trajectory of the pandemic, to relate personal experiences of aloneness with relationship, to describe the methods of music construction, and to reference modern day psychological frameworks. The title also hopes to evoke the idea of bringing the isolated pieces of one’s life into a whole integrated system as much of the band’s trajectory was a result of Dean’s urge to bring together the different facets of his life. These seemingly separated parts ranged from his work as a public school music educator to his college experience at CalArts in addition to the inspiration he received from the great Black American Music that he so loved growing up, originally setting him on this path.

Dean Mucetti - Drums, Cymbals
Miguel Ortiz - Bass
Dore Wallace - Guitar (right channel)
Jon Aparicio - Guitar (left channel)
Alex Williams - Piano
Brian Hargrove - Keyboards
