In honor of Women's History Month, The KMC Let's Connect would like to spotlight our SNCO of the week, MSgt Sunshine Sojot !

MSgt Sunshine Sojot is an enlisted professional military education instructor at the Inter-European Air Forces Academy (IEAFA) based in Kapaun Air Station, Germany. She is currently the lead instructor for their Noncommissioned Officer Academy course. This is the academy’s fourth iteration of executing this course on a virtual platform due to the COVID environment. MSgt Sojot took the lead and utilized her Public Health background to ensure the safety of the IEAFA cadre and their families. MSgt Sojot is leading 10 students with eight different specialties from six North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Partnership for Peace nations. True to her namesake, her sunny disposition has proven to be critical in achieving the academy’s vision of developing lifelong ties among allies and partners. One of the founding tenets of IEAFA was to change the post-Soviet mindset by providing educational and technical training opportunities for the enlisted corps in the European theater. MSgt Sojot’s impact in the classroom is relevant to mitigating the global conflicts of today as she demonstrates the power of interoperability. IEAFA is known for blending officer and enlisted development while catering to an international audience, bridging this gap is why their motto is “stronger together.” Sergeant Sojot is not only an inspirational airman, but a wife and mother as well. She is married to another military member and together, they are raising their six children and Pomeranian.

We salute you MSgt Sojot!!

SSgt Yamisha Jones is an Aerospace Medical Services Craftsman who is currently assigned to the Primary Care Flight under the 86th Healthcare Operations Squadron at Ramstein AB, Germany. SSgt Jones is a valued asset to the Primary Care Flight as she has a diverse background that allows her to “plug and play” where needed. As an Allergy Immunizations Technician, she drives preventative medicine by providing vaccine counseling, deployment clearances, and scheduled vaccinations to over 16K Ramstein beneficiaries which culminated over 55K vaccines administered last year. But she doesn’t stop there, SSgt Jones is a jack of all trades that has assisted the Dependent Care Clinic during a manning shortage. Her background in Family Medicine allowed SSgt Jones to step right in and assist with keeping access to care available for our beneficiaries. She also provided mentorship to several Airmen who were interested in becoming Allergy Immunization Technicians. She has contributed greatly to the Primary Care Team, Squadron, Group and KMC mission!

Additionally SSgt Jones has championed the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative for the Medical Group where she has coordinated with KMC D&I group to reinvigorate the program. She has organized a team to host events not only for the Medical Group, but also to have open invites to the units around base. Her vision for this important initiative is inspiring and will help develop teamwork, cohesiveness, and a understanding of all the diverse groups we have throughout the Joint forces serving around the KMC. Women’s History Month plans include events that focus on “Tea Time” where we bring women together and discuss and support each other across generations. Also, she is planning a group that will tie back into medical care for women and how it differs across generation, geographical locations, religions, backgrounds, etc. These ideas will launch the group into future events throughout the year that will bring us closer together and generate a diverse and inclusive environment for the members of the KMC!

In Celebration of Women International Day!!
Women are responsible for countless discoveries and inventions since the start of civilization, but they often receive little recognition for their work in the sciences. Women have developed gadgets and tools from everyday items to specialized military equipment. Female Air Force scientists, engineers, mathematicians, medical professionals, and artists have developed cutting edge inventions providing protection, comfort, and nourishment to Airmen over the decades. Some notable examples of their ingenuity include pressure seals for spacesuits, ear protection for aircrews, pressurized masks and helmets for high-altitude flights, and space food.

In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed Public Law 94-106, the Military Procurement Bill, authorizing the appointment of women into the service academies. Five years later, on May 28, 1980, the first group of female cadets graduated from the US Air Force Academy. While the first group of women admitted to the Academy had not aspired to become pioneers they welcomed the challenge. Throughout their four years at the Academy, the women were heavily scrutinized by the media, society, and other service members. While facing discrimination from upper classmen, the women reached graduation by believing in themselves, remaining disciplined, and focusing on a greater goal than their own.
Women’s History Month began as a national celebration in 1987 to honor the contributions women have made to the US and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Female Airmen and Guardians have proven to be vital to the success of the Department of the Air Force over the last several decades.
