🎧 NEW EPISODE 🎧

This month, to celebrate , we spoke to Kristin Thue, Policy and Advocacy Coordinator for the APPG on Drones and Modern Conflict and Engagement Coordinator at the Employers' Initiative on Domestic Abuse.

Kristin talks to us about the overlaps in her two roles, women’s rights and international security, and the links between private and public violence, with broader implications for international security.

She also gives inspiring advice on breaking into the and fields (spoiler alert: it's not easy, but activism and putting your voice out there clearly and continuously can be a great start). And "having a conscious relationship with your weaknesses and what you still don't know - don't let that be the reason to not enter spaces we all belong in".

📌 NEW INTERVIEW 💬

We spoke with Evan Supple about the role of social movements in informing and enabling new ways of responding to the climate crisis, with a focus on global environmental grassroots movement Extinction Rebellion. Grounded in French philosopher Alain Badiou’s revolutionary political thought, Evan discusses the limits of liberal notions of responsibility, and explains why a more radical conception of responsibility is needed to foster emancipatory environmental politics. 🌏

Evan is a ballet dancer by career but continues to research and publish as an independent scholar. His research interests include German Idealism, Marxism, environmental politics, postcapitalist notions of change, and love. He holds a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Athabasca University, Canada.

*CALL FOR PAPERS*: The world has become an increasingly hostile place: from military coups, war, famine, atrocities, diplomatic and political crises emerging in all corners of the globe. In this context, vacuums of accountability raise the moral and ethical question of responsibility and what that means in an international context. We want to hear your thoughts.

Are the growing threats posed by great power rivalry due to the inability of the UN Security Council to face these and amend its mechanisms? Are governments neglecting their obligations to the climate change emergency by dropping pledges, and is it too little too late? What can academics, practitioners and policy makers do? What can the youth do?

CALL FOR WRITERS!

Dear members of the Responsibility Collective,

There are currently a number of issues and topics in the news which demand our attention and raise crucial questions about responsibility. We would love to cover them on our online platform. We are looking for writers to submit blogs (essays/creative pieces/short articles) and narratives (personal accounts or viewpoints) on topics covered in the list below.

Please direct message or email us at [email protected] if you would like to write on any of these and we can help you through the submission process. The deadline for messaging us with your interest is Friday 3rd September 2021.

1. Afghanistan: What does the US & NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan mean for Afghan civilians, especially women? What responsibility do states, individuals, local and international organisations, humanitarian organisations among others have in mitigating the impacts of this withdrawal? What form should this responsibility take?
2. IPCC report: What are your initial thoughts? How has it been covered in the news? How might policymakers around the world react? Does anything stand out to you, if so, what? Where does individual vs collective responsibility sit here?
3. The earthquake and its aftermath in Haiti: What this means for civilians, and the wider responsibility of nations across the world. Who should be offering aid, why? What does this mean for the responsibility of individuals, as well as states?

If you’d like to submit a blog on any other topic, please get in touch to discuss further.
