Many of you have been asking me why I've created BUILD St. Louis, the new construction and development podcast.

Through the years, I've had the privilege of interviewing SO many innovative minds in the industry. After these fascinating interview conversations, print journalism space constraints left a lot of this valuable information on the cutting room floor.

BUILD St. Louis affords us all a deeper dive into relevant topics and gives our amazing experts a chance to uncover not only the what but also the why. Now I can include a comprehensive, holistic discussion of issues and opportunities impacting not only St. Louis but the nation as well.

I hope you'll check out our first BUILD St. Louis episodes and give us a 5-star review. Happy listening!

It was my great pleasure to talk with building material experts including Negwer Materials, Inc.'s Pete Wilhelms and write this Engineering News-Record story about how they're managing still-unpredictable supply chain issues to serve customers and keep building projects humming. Thanks to additional subject matter experts Rob Webb of Southwestern Suppliers, Inc. and Lynn Schwarz with the Building Material Suppliers Association (BMSA).

If a journalist offers to share a pre-published draft of his/her news story with you, please don't repeatedly "check in" to see if it's done yet or ask exactly when you can expect to receive it.
Most of us have a lot of articles on our plates (daily) to write. We'll do our best to give you an approximation of when we'll complete it (if it's not for a daily publication or time-sensitive TV/radio broadcast).
What we do isn't an exact science. Our articles usually involve interviewing sources from several companies, some who postpone our scheduled conversations and eat into the time we've got to write the article. Depending upon when we get those interviews completed, we're then able to write the story, weaving all the expertise together. Marketing/comms professionals, please remember that this process takes longer than producing an internal marketing piece, where your firm has control over the deliverable and its timeline.

Honestly, I'm not crabby. :)
But if you're one of the many communications/marketing people who ask a publication to let you know when your (complimentary) press release is going to be published, please stop and think about this request.
Particularly if it's a small publication, there's no way we can notify individuals every time we upload information. Realistically we receive between 150-350 free submissions (and often more) per day.
If you want to know whether/when we published your submission, set up a Google Alert (with your subject's name/topic/headline) and you'll receive an email from Google whenever and wherever it runs.

Although this was penned in 2016, it's more relevant today than ever, particularly in light of young marketing and communications professionals who may not have received proper media training.

Can you guess what this one thing is? Yup, asking a journalist for a list of interview questions. See this spot-on blog post about how we view this request.

The reporter told me it’s happening with more frequency.  “It” is public relations professionals having the brazenness to ask reporters to submit their questions prior to an interview. The trigger for our discussion was an instance where another PR professional had recently re...

27/01/2022

Beyond the research and expert source (interviewee) content, pure magic, artistry and the journalist's individual style go into the writing of a news article. Much like baking a torte, there's a reason we sift specific ingredients in (and out), carefully measure our audience and "bake" a story at the optimal temperature and duration to produce a piece that's interesting and digestible for our readers.

If we welcome you to review a story draft for accuracy only, please do so with our appreciation. But don't try to change the recipe and rewrite our article.

26/01/2022

When a journalist invites you to serve as an expert source for a developing story, it's totally fine to suggest additional potential subject matter experts for the writer to contact and include.

It's NOT okay for YOU to invite them to participate.

Journalists are held to strict word counts/limits for each story we write. By the time we've invited you to the story, we've likely already planned and invited the additional "guests" to this editorial event.

Also, if you're going to add additional listeners/participants (from your company) to our scheduled interview with you, please let us know this in advance.

A few days ago I was interviewing an expert by phone when (midway through the interview) an unidentified voice began speaking. Was I to also record the information she was offering? Who was she? Was she the firm's marketing director? My invited source's boss? Don't confuse the listener (the writer). Make it easy for us to share your expertise accurately.

Zoom sessions are often an ideal platform for collaborative team discussions.

But for the journalist, video calls often add a degree of visual distraction and complexity that is not necessary.

Many reporters/writers are typing into a Word document at the rate at which you are speaking. We are also trying to glance up to see any visuals you are wanting to share in real time, which are often way too small to decipher because our Word document is maximized and your video sharing screen is not.

Rather than assuming we want to talk to you via video, consider choosing only one expert source and grant us access to him or her via a one-on-one telephone conversation.

Send any relevant videos, images and other resources one or two days ahead of our phone interview so we can take time and study them while we are not taking notes as your source is speaking to us.

Thanks for understanding that unless we are broadcast journalists, we need to be concentrating on the spoken word and your expert’s narrative, devoting our sole attention to that in order to produce the best news story.

Reminder to marketing/communications professionals who continue to ask for a list of interview questions for an upcoming interview with their subject matter expert:

Please don't do this. Do ask us for a specific thrust of our story topic, yes.

But if you stop and think about it, we're NOT the expert. We don't work in your field, nor in your expert's position. That's why we're calling upon you to share expertise on the topic at hand.

Rather than sending you a list of specific questions, we're affording you flexibility in how you approach our topic. The second question we'll ask (and from there on) depends upon what we learn from your answer to the first question. Does this make sense?
