Film review “Sting of the West”

In a rotting cabin, Tedeum Manure (Timothy Brent) along with his father Stinky (Lionel Stander), his mother (Maria Vico) and grandfather insult and beat each other up furiously, but in their own way they love each other. They have the deed to a rich mine in an area that is full of cheaters and swindlers where documents relating to mining operations are non-existent. Mr. Grant (Eduardo Fajardo) buys these unproductive mines at auction at ridiculously low prices, which he then operates, with the intention of getting his hands on a real producing mine sooner or later. Coming on the scene is Father Jackleg (Jack Palance) a fake priest who is actually an escaped convict named Buck Santin on whose head hangs a sizeable reward. Tedeum and all the Manure family find themselves in the pool of a public restroom, where their mine document becomes soggy and faded, and then useless. Finally, it all comes together in a penitentiary, at the center of which is the well that leads to the rich mine.

The film should have been title TEDIUS as the viewer will have a real chore in trying to watch this one. Sorry to say Enzo was a great action director but when it came to a 100% comedy western he was very lacking. Slapstick was the name of the game by then and he followed what the producers wanted to present. So many dramatic and action actors wanted to make a comedy and most failed miserably. A limited number of black humor lines or scenes in a film is one thing, and Leone was good at this, are more than enough.

The Manure family is one sick family unit and although Palance looks like he may have enjoyed yucking it up in this one it’s one of the worst of the genre.

The DeAngelis score adds nothing to the proceedings and the story itself just rambles. Another waste of a decent cast.

Viewer beware this is a bottom 10 film and I give it a 2 out of 10.

Film Review – “Stop Over in Hell”

Story: The Civil War has ended, and the country is undergoing a deep process of change. The railway translates into progress and the stagecoaches have gone into decline due to the constant threat posed by bandits. The Colonel (Pablo Scola) is one of them – a survivor of the old world and his partners in crime, Red (Maarten Dannenberg) and Cuba (Armando Buika), his perfect complement. Chris (Victor Vidal) and the veteran Ernest (Denis Rafter) are in charge of one of the stagecoach stops of the Black Hell company, and that morning, as always, they are waiting for travelers. The first vehicle of the day consists of two attractive sisters, Liz (Tania Watson) and Anne (Veki Velilla), who are in mourning for their father´s death. They are traveling to fulfill his last will so that they can start a new life. Soon after the sisters’ arrival, the Colonel´s gang bursts into the stop. They have not arrived by chance, they are looking for something very specific and they are sure that it’s there, they will find it. The gang is received with mistrust due to their appearance and attitude. However, they do not have any intention of pretending. They kidnap all of those present and begin a macabre game which only they enjoy playing. The Colonel solely asks for one thing, to abide by his law and wait. But the night is long, and the vultures perceive the smell of death that the stagecoach stop emits.

A modern take on the genre with a film much like “The Hateful Eight”. Full of tension, torment,
terrorism, violence and gore. Director Enzo Castellari has a cameo appearance which adds to the
films credibility. The acting is good but be warned, it’s slow paced and wordy. The score by José
Ignacio Arrufat adds to the tension, and it sounds like a train heading for an unknown
destination. This is not for everyone’s taste and there’s just one building, the way station sitting
in the middle of nowhere.

I give it a 4 out of 10.

Film Review of – “Stay Away from Trinity When He Comes to Eldorado”

Jonathan Duke (Stan Cooper) makes a living by cheating at cards and selling the fake elixir of life. He’s helped in this enterprise by Sebastian Carter (Gordon Mitchell) as his barker. Unmasked by a stubborn old man, the two return to Trinity. Here Eldorado (Craig Hill) has accumulated wealth through tyranny and calling himself a god. He fulfills his delusions in the midst of a bevy of servants. To rob this dangerous madman Duke asks for help from Ringo Jones (Custer Gail) and sides with Juanita (Daniela Giordana), a victim of the despot. With a ploy (appearing as a magician who is assisted by Juanita) Jonathan manages to steal a large sum from Eldorado. Then with Eldorado neutralized Ringo, Carter, Juanita and himself he opens a gambling hall where he can happily cheat.

This is basically a Demofilo Fidani film directed by his cinematographer Aristide Massaccesi using the alias Dick Spitfire. I’m sure Demofilo had a hand in directing or assisting Aristide. It’s another over the top comedy which as in most runs the gamut clever to total slapstick. There’s plenty of the Fidani stock company on board.

There’s really nothing here to recommend watching unless you are a completist. Good luck in staying all the way through this one.

I give it a 2 out of 10.
