"F&SF recently accepted a story by a writer whose background, when we learned of it, turned out to be a cause for concern. We will not be publishing that story.

I stand by my editor’s integrity, leadership, and vision for F&SF.

Apologies to everyone who has been disappointed. We strive to do our best and will continue to do so. Thank you to those folks who have supported us."

Enjoy this recent review of the new MAY/JUNE 2023 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction from AMAZING STORIES by Andrew Weston:

"If you’re looking for a truly spectacular blend of ancient history and far-future adventure, then look no further. This issue has whales that sing directly to the stars; tips of the hat to Lord of the Rings; revenge-seeking mummies; AIs that threaten to make humans redundant in just about every aspect of life; and dingy drinking holes on even dingier moons in which to make new besties."

2023 feels like its moving faster than the speed of light! I hope your holiday was peaceful and restful and that the new year is treating you all gently. There is some good news for the magazine, but I'll save that for another post. This is my twelfth issue as the editor of F&SF, and I am honored to continue this new journey with such wonderful writers and readers!

The new stories, poems, and voices for the January/February 2023 issue are exciting, original, and memorable, and I'm thrilled to share them with you, especially with Kent Bash's vibrant, retro spacey cover that made me smile when I first saw it.

Thank you for your kind letters and other reading recommendations, as well as your thoughts on my Sun Ra editorial. I didn't realize so many of you shared love for the Arkestra's music. Some fellow David Bowie fans reached out as well, and that has been a treat. Let me know if you pick up any of the works that are discussed in our Curiosities columns, as that's an in-house favorite, and it would be great to know what you discovered in reading these unusual works that may have escaped your radar over the years. And of course, our columnists appreciate any feedback you care to share, as they work very hard on creating original, interesting content for each issue.

You've probably heard that Amazon has shaken up the magazine scene by "reorganizing" their direct subscription model. Please know that digital readers can obtain PDFs, epub, and mobi versions of the magazine via Weightless Books (on Twitter). Meanwhile, subscribe and renew your subscriptions directly with the magazine when you can. F&SF is a great gift, so check out those gift subscriptions as well, and thank you for helping to Keep Print Alive in these challenging times!

Dear readers,

We're on my eleventh issue, November/December 2022, and I'm excited about these new stories, poems, columns, and art! Some are beloved icons and others are exciting lights, making their F&SF debut. We have another cool cover by Mondolithic Studio that illustrates Cyberpunk pioneer John Shirley's cover story, "Sacrificial Drones" and the new humor contest winners are announced in this issue. This issue's theme explores the darkness and the light of the new season and, yes, there is a holiday tale that I hope will make you smile.

Thank you all so much for your continued support, and many thanks to the wonderful F&SF team! They all live very full lives and yet each comes to share their love and appreciation of the magazine by giving it their time and great care. No small gift, thank you!

May the new season bring you all a lot of rest and joy!

All best,
Sheree Renée Thomas

Greetings readers,

The September/October 2022 issue, my tenth, as editor of F&SF, already has made its way to many of you around the world, thanks for letting us know. Look for some faves and some wonderful debuts by Charles Andrew Oberndorf, Douglas Schwarz, C.B. Blanchard, Karim Kattim, Lucas X. Wiseman, Remi Martin, Samantha Murray, Linda Niehoff, Constance Fay, Gerri Leen, Amanda Hollander, Dixon Chance, and Mary Soon Lee. Enjoy new columns from Charles de Lint, Elizabeth Hand (who will soon be handling the creation of a brand new Shirley Jackson novel, supported by the author's estate!), Karin Lowachee, David J. Skal, and explore "The Moon Illusion" in Jerry Oltion's latest science column.

Our vibrant, cosmic cover by Hugo Award-winning artist Bob Eggleton inspired several commissioned cover stories, including "One Day I Will" by Phoenix Alexander, "In the Dream" by Meg Elison, and "Les Chimères: An Ode" by Molly Tanzer. Please share your favorite stories on FB & on Twitter.

Thanks for your continued support of F&SF that helped make the magazine a 2022 Hugo Award Finalist in the Short Form category. The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction will attend the 80th World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago this weekend, so say hello if you're out and about. Thanks also for sending in your subscriptions and your renewals! Hope you enjoy this new issue, and that you'll be on the look out for the final issue of the year, available in November.

All best,
Sheree Renée Thomas

Greetings readers,

The July/August 2022 issue, my ninth, as editor of F&SF, has been winging its way around the world to you. If you're a subscriber and have not received your recent issue, please reach out to our Circulation Manager with your subscription info (DM so the kind soul isn't spammed by Facebook bots). The issue features work by great writers you know and some who are new to you, including Nick DiChario who has penned another one of his moving Italian folktales, Brian Trent, Charlie Hughes, Robert Levy, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Paul Tobin, the multitalented James L. Sutter (photo below) with a music-themed tale, Beth Cato, Rajeev Prasad, Beth Goder, Robert Levy, Alexandra Munck, Nick Wolven, and Ellis Bray.

Our wonderfully weird cover art by Mondolithic Studios, in time for the last supermoon (the sturgeon moon), illustrates the cover story, “Starblind, Booklust, and Hearing the Songs of True Birds” by Rudi Dornemann. If you also follow us on Twitter, please share your favorite stories there, as quite a few F&SF writers are on 'Book Twitter', and they would welcome hearing from you. Readers are still discovering stories from our previous issues, and it has been good to see those excited threads. One author was invited to speak at MIT based on their story and another new writer was recently discussed as being the best debut in the past decade. How exciting!

Thank you for supporting F&SF and for making the magazine a 2022 Hugo Award Finalist in the Short Form category. As always, we appreciate your subscriptions and your renewals, your reviews, original story and poetry submissions, and your word-of-mouth! As you know, it is more than a notion being a print magazine in these challenging times, and we couldn't do it without you. Thank you!

All best,
Sheree Renée Thomas
