Last week, former Serbian State Security high ranking officials Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic were found guilty of aiding and abetting crimes in one Bosnian municipality in 1992. The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (MICT) gave them 12 years each, a sentence that they mostly have already served.

Why is this sentence so relevant and what could it mean for ongoing and future war crimes accountability and prosecution efforts in Serbia?

We enlisted historian Iva Vukusic and Marija Ristic from Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) to answer these and many more questions.
