A lot of us have been devastated and disgusted by the US court decision this week so I’m going to leave this quote here. This was said by Alexander Sanger former president of Planned Parenthood who’s grandmother Margret Sanger founded planned parenthood.

DID YOU KNOW 🗯️ Stats prove that men mainly apply for a job when they meet only 60% of the qualifications, but women apply only if they meet 100% and there are some reasons why this may be so....

First, it’s likely that due to bias in some work environments, women need to meet more of the qualifications to be hired than do their male counterparts. For instance, a McKinsey report found that men are often hired or promoted based on their potential, but women for their experience and track record. If women have experienced this bias throughout their careers, it makes sense why they’d be less likely to apply for a job for which they didn’t meet the qualifications.

Secondly, girls are strongly socialized to follow the rules and in school are rewarded, again and again, for doing so. In part, girls’ greater success in school (relative to boys) arguably can be attributed to their better rule following. Then in their careers, that rule-following habit has real costs, including when it comes to adhering to the guidelines about “who should apply".

Third, certifications and degrees have historically played a different role for women than for men. The 20th century saw women break into professional life – but only if they had the right training, the right accreditations. These qualifications were women's ticket in, their way of proving they could do the job. That history can, lead women to see the workplace as more orderly and meritocratic than it really is. As a result we may overestimate the importance of our formal training and qualifications, and underutilise advocacy and networking.

When it comes to applying for jobs, women need to be as courageous as men. It can’t hurt to believe more in oneself, but in this case, it’s more important that you believe less in what appear to be the rules.

Have you experienced this? Tag a woman in the comments who should never sell themselves short!

Representation has always mattered and will always matter! 📺

Media, in all of its forms, has immense power to shape ideas. Television, films and digital media can influence how we see others, and how we see ourselves. Accurate, authentic representation can break down barriers, open us to new ideas, create powerful role models, and even be a source of inspiration.

The content our society sees is supposed to reflect its people, but all too often, the entertainment and media industries tend to marginalise people of colour, women, the LGBTQIA community, and disabled people - just to name a few. Stories affect all areas of life in terms of how people view themselves, how they live their lives, and how they see others.

Seeing oneself reflected in media is crucial because society is not monolithic, but multifaceted. The continued cycle of excluding diversity, inclusion, and ignoring misrepresentation in the entertainment and media industry showcases the importance of having diverse creatives involved both on-screen and behind the scenes.

Visual media helps us see how the world works and our place in it. Everyone should be able to tune into their desired media format and say “that person is just like me and if they can do it so can!"

Comment below the best representation you've seen in film, tv, festivals, music, etc. - and how it makes you feel! 💭🌵

We look back at one of the key unrecognised women who formed the cornerstone of R&B and the development of Rock music. Sister Rosetta Tharpe opened doors for Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and even Elvis, yet those doors were often slammed in her face. Being black, bi and bombastic in 1940’s America was not always a good combination.

Bi, black, and bombastic, R&B legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe has never received the recognition she deserves.

To Celebrate International Womens Day we talked to Roanne Mesirow founder of Entertainment about what it's like being the female manager of Rap artists. The discrimination she faced didn’t just come from the guys either.

Roanne Mesirow talks to AWTY about the discrimination she faced, from men and women, when setting up Mezz, a female led music management company.

"I escaped from my Tourette's by immersing myself in music" Harper Starling is undoubtedly a rising star of the USA music scene. Starling has already had a number of top 20 Billboard dance hits including "Euphoria", which reached number one. She has composed with top award winning writers/producers. However, if building a successful career is not enough she has also done so whilst at the same time suffering from Tourette's since the age of eight.

It’s as simple as that. Girls want to be safe walking home, in the studio, or doing anything they want to do. Everyone deserves to feel safe- which is exactly what we want to achieve with our charter of good practice.

It’s time to listen to women. 🗯🎙🌵

The F-List Music quotes we love by inspirational women in music!

“For a female artist, it takes a lot more to be taken seriously if you’re not sat down at a piano or with a guitar, you know? For a male artist, people instantly assume they write their own music, but for women, they assume it’s all manufactured.” Dua Lipa 🎵❤️
