Safety tips for solo movers (or for anyone moving outdoors). 1. Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be home. If something happens, they’ll know where to start the search and rescue. 2. Bring a cell phone if there’s coverage; consider a satellite phone or text device if there’s no cell service. 3. Bring enough stuff to stay safe if you’re outside longer than planned (first aid kit, extra layers, calories and fluids). Enjoy moving outside, and get home safely!

Move more. Move often. Move safely.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Be Patient with New Movement Buddies.

Abbie the Black Lab joined the FitLab team around 1 month ago. There has been a bit of frustration during the first month of walks because Abbie is not an experienced trail dog. But with time, patience, and practice, Abbie is adapting to our movement routine. Whether your movement team members are human or canine, be patient during the learning curve.

Move more. Move often. Be patient with new team members.

Climb away from crowds. Trails can get crowded on Summer weekends. Looking for a little more space? Climb a steep hill. The path less traveled is often hilly. So if you’re looking for a quieter hike, run, or bike ride, and you want to increase your chances of seeing wildlife, try climbing a hill.

Move more. Move often. Embrace climbing hills.

Don’t be afraid to rest. Having a movement plan is good. Knowing when to adapt that plan is even better. Pushing yourself to “workout” when you need a mental or physical break may lead to injury or burnout. A day of rest and relaxation helps you move more in the future.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Please, Don’t Sneak Up on Us.

The Labs know their human staff tries hard to be aware of their surroundings during trail hikes. Occasionally, the Labs distract the humans by eating inappropriate items on the trail (sticks, acorns, etc…). For that reason, the Labs would like to remind all trail users to give notice when passing others from behind. “Sneaking” up on people might scare them off the trail!

Move more. Move often. Give notice when approaching other trail users from behind. Do your part to help all trail users enjoy their experience.

Stress is part of life. Many people talk about ways to “relieve” stress, but trying to eliminate stress may result in more stress! Instead of trying to eliminate stress, we look for ways to manage stress. One of our favorite ways to manage stress is by making time for enjoyable activities…like getting outside with Labradors or bikes. How do you manage your stress levels??? Please share in the comments.

Move more. Move often. Move in ways you enjoy. Use movement to manage stress.

Consistency is key. The most important thing in your movement practice is being consistent. If you’re starting a new movement routine, like Abbie the Black Lab is starting to walk trails, start slowly and focus on being consistent. If you try to do too much, too soon, you may be at risk of injury or burnout.

Move more. Move often. Consistency is key to making movement part of your lifestyle.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Make Time for Fun.

The Labs know humans have responsibilities other than caring for their dogs…they don’t UNDERSTAND…but they KNOW. They also know that, as Labradors, they are responsible for reminding the humans to make time for fun. Even on busy days, they encourage us to get outside for a walk in the woods.

Move more. Move often. Get outside. Make time for fun.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Be Aware of Your Surroundings.

As we’re training Abbie the Black Lab to be a responsible trail dog, we are especially conscious of our surroundings on the trails.
We stay alert for other trail users (human and animal). When possible, we step off the trail to allow other users to pass…because not everyone wants a close encounter with an energetic lab.

Move more. Move often. Be willing to yield. Share the trail.

Start where you are. Abbie the Black Lab is new to pack walks…but she doesn’t need to worry about whether she can keep up. Our philosophy is to move at the pace of the slowest member of the group. So we move at Abbie’s pace and keep the walks a bit shorter for now. She’s a quick learner. Soon enough, she’ll be leading the pack.

Move more. Move often. Move at your own pace.

Yesterday, an amazing team from South Hills Moving & Storage packed up the FitLab Pittsburgh HQ…tomorrow they’ll be delivering everything to FitLab Deep Creek HQ…as you might imagine, this process involves a great deal of time (and a fair amount of stress). The FitLab team is taking a micro “vacation” while we tackle this stage of the move. While we’re making our way through stacks of boxes, we hope you enjoy a movement-filled week! We’ll be back later this week with a new movement tip.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Meet Abbie.

We weren’t expecting to add a member to the FitLab team so soon after losing Maggie the Black Lab. But when Puddin’s breeder (Newlander Labradors) let us know Puddin’s grand-niece was available, we couldn’t resist! Abbie is an 11 month old black Labrador, and she seems excited to join the FitLab Deep Creek team. So please help us welcome Abigail, aka Abbie, and look for her words of wisdom in future Labrador Lessons.

Move more. Move often. Move with friends, old and new.

Grieving…But still moving. When you make movement part of your lifestyle, you keep moving…even on the bad days. As many of you know, we recently lost Maggie the Black Lab to a fast-growing spinal tumor. We are sad (massive understatement)…and Puddin the Yellow Lab is also sad. But the best thing for all of us is to keep moving. We’re honoring Maggie’s memory by hiking and biking on trails she loved.

Move more. Move often. Keep moving. Remember the good times.

Celebrate your opportunities to move. No movement session is perfect. We can’t always move where, or how, we want to move…and we certainly can’t control the weather! But we CAN appreciate every opportunity to move, and focus on the good aspects of each movement session. Like celebrating the chance to get outside and ride…even if it’s hot.

Move more. Move often. Celebrate movement.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Enjoy Your Movement.

Puddin is still not accustomed to being an only dog, especially on her walks, but we make sure she gets to go outside and enjoy her movement. If you want to make movement part of your lifestyle, it helps to enjoy your movement activities. Puddin not only loved the scents on her Sniffy Sunday walk, she also made use of the video break to roll around. We’re doing our best to keep her entertained until we find her the right furry friend.

Move more. Move often. Even when you’re sad, try to enjoy your movement.

LabLessons from FitLab Deep Creek:

Stay Positive on the Trail.

Puddin has noticed that there is a lot of negativity on social media…even on Facebook groups for trail enthusiasts 😳. Dog walkers complain about cyclists. Cyclists complain about walkers. Everyone complains about SOMETHING. Puddin encourages people to focus on their own behavior and safety. If you behave in a way that keeps you (and your dogs) safe on the trail, the trail will be a more positive place for everyone.

Move more. Move often. Tune in for weekly wisdom from Labradors.
