Petit France is an incredible historic area of Strasbourg with canals and cobbled streets, but there’s a wee secret in there.

In 1687 a hospice for the incurable was moved to the area, and it stayed as such for centuries. When syphilis hit France this hotel specialized into what it was by the late 1600’s. By the late 18th century the hospital was known as “Petit France” and it had gone through being German, independent and then French so language really moved around over years and years of change.

People were helped and treated in what is now a tourist hub and some of the most gorgeous architecture in the area. Lore under every cobble.

A badass street mural is so fun to find. Everything’s pretty walkable in the historic area of Basel near the river. Very hilly but worth the climbs for epic art and the Basel Minster. 🎨

We managed to seek out each of the strange and unique things we’d hoped to while we were here. 😍

Who, me? Just creepin’ in the night for a Renaissance ghost who’s allegedly been haunting here for 450 years.

And the ghost dogs. 😍

I’ll reel this rad tidbit of Switzerland lore next week when the wifi and my data return to normal. 😬😬😬

Grüezi! May I take ya inside the Basel Minster of Basel Switzerland?

This church was constructed between 1019 and 1500 (jeez these take a while) and was Catholic but is now a Reformed Protestant church (I grew up in the Protestant one, it’s a little weird but no trauma left behind, I don’t think).

In the heating months the crypt is kept closed off to protect it so we could only look through a wee window and a door to that area but you bet I found it, ah, quickly. 😬 Burials from centuries before! Wow!

Ya lookin’ at both Romanesque and Gothic architecture here. Gorgeous. 🤩

Basel is quite lovely and there’s nothing that Duolingo could do to help me here with the mix of languages and dialects, so I’ve been quite appreciative for the amount of English spoken! 🇨🇭🙌🏼🥨

A castle, restored after centuries of ruin from 1901-1908 by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Began as a monastery overlooking the Upper Rhône Plain from a strategic high point (haut=high, koenig=king’s, bourg=city) in 774, it was mentioned in a deed issued by Charlemagne and stayed as a monastic structure until an actual castle was documented in the 1100’s.

After a nearly 2 month long siege by the Swedish, it lay in ruins for centuries before the kaiser rebuilt it to be a medieval marvel of the modern era.

And to see the old and new construction together is astounding and wandering an actual castle is … of course … something that makes me wonder how my life is even real. 😭🥹

I think I’ll haunt this one too - cuz no one’s moving in, and I’d make a terrible French guide.

A casket cart from the Alsace Region of France, 1800’s.

Woven hair memorial, same region and century.

An entire haunted street? A night of sushi and a wander was a fantastic way to explore the area in quiet (as quiet as an SB7 🌚) with !

Huguenot Street in New Paltz lets you step back in time to over 300 years of history, and that cemetery has stories and vibes.

10 acres of land and structures, and you get to learn the whole context of the French settlement - the Indigenous and enslaved African peoples and Dutch settlers who all create pieces of the full landscape of history here.

And fine work in preservation. 💪🏼

Dig a hole, you find the physical. Ask for the Other, you might gain the spiritual. You never know.

And there’s a ghost story with one of the 1800’s homes there - I’m gonna re-look for this story but years ago we heard (and I swear I read) about a man who lived in the home pictured with me in it who wrote a letter about seeing his deceased sister one night. So, legend only, I can’t find the source just now. 🌚

🗝️ Unlocking shots from The Before Times:
Last pics are 2009 when I worked as an archeologist and toured a dig at the property. Kaolin clay pipe stems, bowls and pieces are waaay common cuz those pipes were long and used in a way that they left snapped off pieces behind as discard. Those ended up in the dirt a whole lot. Finding an intricately pressed or carved one was always a rad bonus.

Hi,

Yesterday was difficult to navigate but at this moment we would like to let you know we (Amy and Ryan), are full supporters of human rights. Our digital spaces are safe for trans people. Our LGBTQIA+ siblings, friends and strangers - you aren’t just welcome, you’re invited.

We’re a small operation but we mean this: hate has no place within the online spaces we have control over, let alone in our real lives.

There is a lot of emotion in what’s just happened nationally, and we want to continue (and stay on top of) being and building a community that understands the real stakes here, and is accessible and present for you with empathy.

We’re letting you know we operate here with care and concern over the wellbeing of milllions of people, and we don’t have to know you to stay fighting for you. 💙

The good weird places can be hard to find after a while, there’s so many out there with exaggerated or falsified history, lore told as irrefutable fact, and legends or personal experiences taking precedence over historic figures and real people.

Fort Mifflin doesn’t need the extras, everything about it speaks for itself. I kid you not - something else might be able to speak from Somewhere Else, yet IN those rooms and casemates. It’s WILD to truly experience something that leaves you stunned.

When a voice, a breath, a touch, a feeling, any and all of it - when that comes wafting across your senses it’s just damn outstanding.
👀

Aaaand it doesn’t have to immediately be scary, or terrifying. That stun can be excitement and wonder and curiosity, but fear has a way of overriding the rest, we’re wired so annoyingly. 🧠

You’re more capable of control of your reaction and your emotions in these moments than you think, and because I’ve personally worked through it over yeaarrs and I believe there’s more to be gained through endeavoring to experience the Weird with excitement than with fear.

Fear is easy. Standing directly in its path and allowing it to lose strength is hard, and entirely, completely possible. Mifflin is the EXACT kind of large location with unfamiliar dark spaces to push back at one’s own fear in and be potentially rewarded with a life-altering core memory.
