Quite often, the best artists -- the ones with a truly original, captivating eye -- aren't found in fancy studios, workshops or galleries.
They're in the raw element. Hidden in plain view. In the very fabric of nature that they harness and put to canvas. Case in point: Tobago's Anthony McKenna.

Peace. Love. And Creative Power.
It’s an esteemed honour and privilege to be launching our first piece on Emancipation Day in the Caribbean. After all, without people of colour, this world would be devoid of a brightness across so many artistic, cultural and creative fields. And honestly, it’s something we took way too long to kick off.
Near Future Studios has been an ideal simmering for over seven years after seeing what resonates in the Caribbean for some time now. Connected to and informed by art being created in the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa, it’s clear there’s an identity in these beautiful waters to harness; islands where a people reside which you will not find anywhere else in the world. A tension, soul and heartbeat that cannot be recaptured. It’s all due to descendants of slaves, indentured labourers, migrants, immigrants and refugees that are now eking out a way of life while still facing ghosts of the colonial past and haunted by sociopolitical oppression internally. And now, with a rising swell of injustice, supremacy complexes and pseudo-fascism, more than ever, artists must hold these mirrors up and show society, politicians, brands, policy-makers, financiers, governments, hate-mongerers, racists and xenophobes, and more so, the public... the reflection that makes us uncomfortable and which we may not like.
It’s also our role to highlight the inspirational stories to drown out the noise in these echo-chambers we swim in every day by reminding our kin of our history, culture, economics, art and everything else that we must maintain belief in to progress and evolve. Things we must sadly fight to preserve now in an era where trust, empathy and compassion, from corporate offices to the streets, may seem to be thinning. But from short films to documentaries to graphic novels, Near Future Studios believes it is our duty to show this may not necessarily be the case -- to use our talents to make true, tangible and meaningful level from a commercial to wild-art level. And we believe in finding genuine partners to meticulously detail these journeys with us, rather than producers who exploit and lie, have hidden agendas or appropriate someone else’s stories. And who else to do tell our stories than us? Sons and daughters of the Caribbean.
But to tell these stories, and also work with narratives in foreign lands, we follow a different path and not just the cliched, scripted aspect of storytelling. We believe in character. Any country has fancy landscapes and unique terrain, but it’s the people that truly define a land. It’s why we adopt a brand journalism strategy to understand the core of messaging and the ‘what, why, when, where and how’ of content for every piece we produce: content with a purpose and which leaves a footprint for the better. It’s the only way we can find our tribe, globally, and really bring to light the nuances and intricacies of cultural tourism in an ever burgeoning artistic minefield.
And as the days tumble on, from fashion to food to music to paintings to sculptors to all other facets of identity preservation, we’ll highlight the people that make us stand out: the hidden gems and characters that define our resilience and spirit. It’s worth noting that in times of pandemic, when our brothers and sisters might take a knee out of exhaustion or rebellion, this content has to uplift them, provide a shoulder to lean on, help them earn coin and also, to let them know, we’re all in this together. All you need is to look at your nation’s anthem and you’ll see... patriotism isn’t a campaign, it’s a philosophy, a way of life, and no matter where you live, that land was built on everyone working hand in hand. Strangers and families sharing blood, sweat and tears in the fight for liberation.
With that in mind, our first official piece is part of our #ReelUnity series -- a touchstone to reiterate in the Caribbean, division and discrimination has no place. There’s a reason we’re called ‘a melting pot’ and as the next couple years roll by and our international collaborations are unveiled, you’ll see we do have kindred spirits across the world in places we never expect. And in that sense, you have a movement. You have a community. You have family.
