They’re not overthinking it. They’re not worrying what people will say (because they don’t say it anyway, no one has that much time to think about you!). They’re not looking over their shoulder worry if they’re good enough.

They’ve realised that they- like you- have every right to take up space, that journalists want to know about you, that PR opportunities are there for the taking.

Now go forth, take action and send that f*cking email you’ve been thinking about for 6 months.

(I’m feeling angry today for obvious reasons so I’m going to use this ranty mood for good)

I asked my DIY PR Members to bust some myths about PR and this is one of my absolute faves.

You deserve a seat at the PR table

Your business is enough.

You are enough.

You don’t need to be bigger, or better, or shinier, or wait until….

You are worthy.

You have every right to be here.

And you probably have far more interesting stories and PR opportunities than the “big boys” anyway.

Don’t let you get in the way of getting some amazing results for your business.

Let’s show them how it’s done.

The impact of PR can be difficult to track, especially if you’re a small business owner and aren’t spending a fortune on brand analysis tools (and I wouldn’t recommend you do that).

But sometimes I hear results from a brand that stop me in my tracks and remind me why PR is such an important part of the puzzle.

This wasn’t my client or member, but I love it so much I wanted to share with you:

- The brand provided an innovative solution to a household chore and got lots of press coverage around their launch. They would regularly feature in women’s lifestyle magazines and the national press

- The founder is also great at building their personal profile so was able to tell their brand story outside of the product pages in magazines, on stages, on podcasts etc

- The producer of a BBC programme read about them in a magazine and long story short ended up including them in a four minute segment on a programme.

- This led to £500,000 worth of sales over a six week period 🤩🤩🤩

This is a mega PR success story - but it’s not just them, I hear time and time again from my DIY PR members 1-2-1ers and clients that I work with about the impact that PR has on their business growth:
For example:

🙌400% increase in web traffic from on interview in The Metro
🙌£1500 sales from one influencer post
🙌 Approached (and then stocked in) Liberty after the buyer read about them in a magazine
🙌Paid to speak as an expert in their field (having joined The PR Set with no experience in their sector)
🙌Huge influx of orders after appearing on This Morning
🙌A collaboration with a business that they never dreamed of being able to partner with

I was asked in a PR training I did last week for tips on how to keep accountable when it comes to getting your PR ticked off your to do list. So I thought it would be useful to share my answers in case they help you get it done:

1. Diarise it and make it non-negotiable. It’s so easy to slip to the bottom of your to do list when something urgent drops in - but you need to prioritise it. Put it in your diary and plan when you’re going to do it. We always blame a lack of time, but how many times do you find yourself endlessly scrolling, or working on something that required a lot more input than the output you get from it. Make it a habit.

2.Break it down into achievable chunks - rather than just having “PR” on your to do list, give yourself achievable goals. Do you want to be on 3 podcasts a quarter, for example, or pitch 5 press a week. I set myself quarterly PR goals broken down by I want to achieve and work back from there. It makes it way less overwhelming that having a bit long list of people to reach out to.

3. Do it Somewhere Else - I have one task in my business that I really need some motivation to do, so anytime I have to do it, I go to a local cafe and work from there until I get that task done. So maybe your PR could be done in a different space? Change your scene and give you the focus to do it

4. Invest in it - I know when I’ve invested in something I’m much more likely to do it and make it a success. I’ve done it with various different areas of my business I want to focus on, such as learning how to do ads and mindset work. Think about investing your PR (I’ve got a great DIY PR membership and work 1-2-1 if you’re looking for somewhere to start!)

5. Find the Right Accountability - it could be with your business bestie, it could be my DIY PR Membership Get It Done Monthly Sessions. It could be as simple as going on your socials to tell people you’re doing it. Whatever works for you, get accountable and get it done!

I’ve just checked my diary - the first meeting I had about my podcast was in Feb ’22 (!) - and I was thinking about it before then too. That’s a really long time to talk yourself out of something.

But last week was yet more proof that the things we tell ourselves in our heads usually aren’t what happens in real life.

I talked myself out of doing my podcast for so long because I was scared of judgement/ exposing myself/ I’d be laughed out of town. (And so many other excuses beyond those)

What actually happened was it’s been incredibly well received, went to number 2 in the podcast marketing charts, started conversations with new people, got me booked for another podcast interview, opened up some new business conversations and shown me how loved I am with messages of support and my cheerleaders picking up their pom poms. It’s also made my dad cry and impressed my kids for about 2.5 seconds.

I’m not sure if it will be the best thing I’ve ever done (it’s a bit soon for that) but it’s definitely not the worst!

So if you’re putting something off because you’re worried about what people will think of you, or that you don’t have the skills to do it, or that you don’t think it will be well received. Chances are you’re wrong and maybe now’s the time to have a word with yourself and stop yourself holding you back.

Just think what might happen if you let yourself do it.

I interviewed the brilliant for my new podcast this week (did I mention I’m launching a podcast? 😝) and this has really stuck with me since our conversation.

We all have so much potential but often the main thing that stops us from doing things to push ourselves forward is fear.

Fear of getting it wrong, or looking stupid, or fear that you’ll be laughed at, or that it won’t be the right thing for your business, or fear of growth, or building something you can’t manage, of success, of failure.

Fear shows up in all sorts of forms.

But imagine if we didn’t run our business through fear but through excitement for opportunities, through joy and belief in ourselves. That’s where the magic happens.

I cannot wait for you to hear this episode when it launches!

And in the meantime, let’s tell fear to do one and crack on with the things that light us up ❤️

We regularly have Meet The Media sessions in my DIY PR membership where my members can meet journalists, find out more about what they’re looking for and how to pitch to them and start building their own relationships wit them. The key outtake is always that they want to hear from small business owners like you- you’re the ones doing interesting things, doing things differently and have new and exciting ideas. So don’t let your businesses size or “newness” put you off doing PR a for your business. You can be featured in magazines, newspaper and more- it’s the doing it that gets you there! (And the other thing people always say is how nice they were- they’re just normal people like you and me, doing their jobs. Right peeps, let’s debunk some PR myths 1. You don’t need to wait until you’re bigger or better to do PR for your biz - even as a one man micro band, you have something that’s of interest - your expertise, your products, your story - don’t wait “until” some other time to get going, you’re great, just as you are. 2. PR isn’t just about press, there are lots of different PR routes you can use to get known for what you do, build your brand and credibility and position yourself as an expert 3. You don’t need a little black book of journalist contacts to get press coverage, I promise. And even if you do have one it doesn’t always help - it’s about knowing how to pitch, what to pitch and who to pitch it to 4. Journalists don’t just want to cover big businesses - they are interested in what you do, if you pitch it right 5. You don’t need lots of £££ to do PR for your biz - you can do it yourself without a big expensive PR agency 6. You don’t need lots of time either - I suggest blocking out an hour or two a week, depending on how you work - to hyper focus on it. Once you have a plan in place it’s just about getting on and doing it.
