THE FANDOM OF THE OPERA - OPERA & MEDIA TECHNOLOGY... PRE-AND POST-PANDEMIC
With MARK SCHUBIN of the Metropolitan Opera in New York
Abstract:

Do you use stereo sound ? A lighting dimmer ? A parabolic microphone ?

You can thank OPERA !

Arguably, even newscasts and sportscasts owe their existence to OPERA. Prior to the pandemic, OPERA was involved in every aspect of media technology, from the first bootleg recording (in 1888) to virtual reality and Google Glass. When the pandemic hit, OPERA houses may have shut down but not OPERA itself, which has actively made use of everything from live-motion capture and computer graphics to Zoom to snail mail.

* How does the Metropolitan Opera control the exit lighting in thousands of cinemas on all seven continents of the world ?
* How does "A-V perspective" affect lip-sync ?

All will be explained in detail at the New England Section SMPTE meeting with Mark Schubin on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, via ZOOM..

Presenter Biography:

Multiple-Emmy-Award-winning SMPTE Fellow Mark Schubin has been the (freelance) engineer-in-charge of the Metropolitan Opera's media projects since 1973 and has worked with other opera companies around the world. He is the winner of SMPTE's 2017 Presidential Proclamation and the Lifetime Achievement Award of Marquis's Who's Who in America.
