Since the launch date for issue 17 is approaching, we have asked our team members about their writing space and process. This is what one of our team members Rukaiya have shared with us:

“My writing process is pretty straight forward. I write when I am inspired and that can be any time of the day and anywhere: whether it is at home, or a cafe or just another street corner, It doesn't matter. When I write I like to read a couple of books, which then help me frame the style, the plot and the type of piece I am writing.”

You can find more of Rukaiya’s brilliant writings through her blogs

Since the launch date for issue 17 is approaching, we have asked our team members about their writing space and their process this is what one of our team members Isaac have shared with us:

“ I don’t really have a process. I sit down, relax, eat, maybe watch a few interesting YouTube videos and then I think up ideas and storylines that excite me. On second thought, I guess that kind of is a process, but hey, it works.”

This book recommendation was sent in by one of our team members Shaymaa Alqallaf

This book makes Shaymaa feel nostalgic as it reminds her of her trip to St. Louis, Missouri. She first laid her eyes on this book at urban outfitters. Whenever she sees the stars, the pink cover, and the blue zodiac signs, she is immediately taken back to that moment when she rediscovered her love of astrology.

Mehak .

Mehak explains her love for Danielle Steel’s writings by saying:

If you are from South Asia, you come with certain unwritten norms; which books you can read, what movies to watch, which genres to avoid. But if you are a rebel, you will not only stick to John Grisham in your 12s and 13s. Danielle Steel was that marker of rebellion for some reason, you will have to ask a brown mom the explanation for. At the age of 13, when I had yet to experience emotions as deep as Steel portrayed, she made me nostalgic. I was nostalgic for love, for family, and ironically, for grief.

This music album was sent in by one of our team members isaac .mckenzie when asked what kind of music makes him nostalgic:

2014 Forest Hills Drive is an album I grew up with. If I hear it now it’s like I’m transported back to Summer 2013. I’m sixteen, waking up to catch the train every day and running late for my classes. I’ve heard the phrase ‘music is the soundtrack to your life’ and this album for me is the epitome of that phrase. It evokes some of my most vivid memories.

One thing music does is momentarily take us back to a part of our life that we remember, fondly or not. Do you have any songs or albums that bring you Nostalgia? Let me see your answers below 👇🏻

This album “Pills N Thrills and Bellaches” by Happy Mondays was sent to us by one of our team members Lee when asked what music makes them feel nostalgic.

Lee tells us:

I was 15 in 1990 when this was album released. Happy Mondays were the first band that I got into, and I still love them. I’d owned other albums (Madonna was my first love!) but this was MINE. I GOT this music. It was funky and dirty and felt, well, a bit dangerous. Just look at that title! It was the soundtrack to my last year in school and although I have listened to it pretty much solidly since, each time I put it on, I go back there.

What music makes you feels nostalgic?

For Mehak this picture of London represents nostalgia as she says:

Human nature and London will always be the 'other'. You crave for peace, London will be bustling. You crave for crowd, London will be empty.

This album has been

Waking up in my house on a weekend morning meant music playing from the downstairs speakers, getting ready for football practise and then coming home and doing homework and household chores. Mahogany Soul is an album that whenever I hear it reminds me of those times. Even when I’m not in the house, when I hear it I feel like grabbing for the hoover!

His reason as to why he’s chosen this quote: I have read Zorba time and time again. I love it’s simplistic outlook towards life and happiness, and it’s an outlook I try to live by myself.

The Future of Nostalgia by Svetlana Boym

Does nostalgia need to be a sweet feeling? Collective nostalgia - does it lead us forward or pulls us back? Svetlana Boym guides us through the ruins and construction sites of post-communist cities — St. Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, and Prague-and the imagined homelands of exiles-Benjamin, Nabokov, Mandelstam, and Brodsky, unraveling the threads of this global epidemic of longing and its antidotes through personal memoir, philosophical essay and historycal analysis.

Meet the team for issue 17 !

Eleanor is a recent graduate of English Literature and History and, after studying and enjoying other’s work for so long, has decided to try her hand at Creative Writing. After re-finding her love for it during the Covid 19 Pandemic. She writes predominantly prose and poetry and is currently working on a piece that asks the question whether the heroes of Ancient Greece would have been as great if their stories had taken place in modern day London.
