Doing final checks for our upcoming release tomorrow! We are so excited to bring the collaborative EP "Vacuum" to our boutique label, alongside SpaceAgePoetry and Dan Bay. Over the past few months, the team and the artists have worked diligently to make this release a reality. Leading up to their upcoming August 16 release 'Vacuum EP' in collaboration with Dan Bay , the spoken word collective SpaceAgePoetry is sharing their inspirations with us, which played a significant role in bringing this release to life artistically 👀

> During the lockdown, SpaceAgePoetry longed for parties where they could perform and dance, particularly in Berlin. However, the train journey to Berlin takes an incredibly long time. Six and a half hours are simply too long for a sustainable "party machen" experience. The lyrics are written during lockdown times in Amsterdam. This tune essentially chronicles SpaceAgePoetry's cherished memories of that time and the love for the city of Berlin.

With heavy hearts we bid farewell to the talented artist, Daniel Zuur, also known as KRAUT. Highly sensitive and deeply attuned to the world around him, infusing his creativity with boundless passion.

Daniel's music was a masterpiece of emotions, weaving captivating rhythms into a symphony that transcended boundaries. With each note, he ignited our hearts with magical melodies where time seemed to stand still.

In Amsterdam, we lovingly referred to Daniel as a "Paradijsvogel" (Bird of Paradise), for he embodied the spirit of this enchanting creature—radiant, colourful, and free-spirited. His unique approach to music was a testament to his extraordinary nature.

We cherish the release of his Atemporal EP on KROOKS Records—a testament to his exceptional talent, touching our souls with its essence and embodying his artistic vision. Beyond the EP, we were blessed to share unforgettable label nights with Daniel, where his performances forged deep connections with the audience. Also, his collaborative spirit shone brightly as he joined forces with fellow artists at the KROOKS label, crafting tracks and remixes that left an enduring impact on the electronic music scene.

To you, loyal fans and supporters, we express our heartfelt gratitude. Without your encouragement and enthusiasm for Daniel, KROOKS Records would not have been able to bring Daniel's work to the international stage.

In this time of mourning, our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel's family and loved ones. May they find strength in the knowledge that he touched the hearts of many, and that his music will forever resonate in our souls. Together we stand united in grief, cherishing the memories of an extraordinary artist and beautiful soul.

“There are multiple bands from the Balkans and Orient who combined folk music with electronic beats. One of them is Oratnitza. They created an original sound by using typical Bulgarian vocal choirs, woodwind instruments and percussion on a bed of slow beats. By adding the didgeridoo, they created something really unique, never heard before in modern music. These trailblazing combinations and journeys of experimentation inspired Mèraque to explore their own paths in a much broader way in both electronic and folkloric music.”

"Folklore consists of traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community, passed through the generations by word of mouth. In our Western society, it is harder to maintain those traditions in music nowadays. One of the ways how Mèraque keeps traditions alive is to apply them in a contemporary setting: mixing modern and traditional influences together.

Artist Filip Petkovski is an inspirational example: he used traditional Macedonian folkloric customs to address current social themes. Through his exhibition “Vita”, he critiques the objectification of women’s bodies and the complexity of human emotion."

“During a live performance of Carlama Orkestar, in between the powerful saxophone harmonies and percussion grooves, Mèraque’s founders, Jorick and Martin, met for the first time. At the time they had no idea what a huge role and impact it would later have in how they realize some of their musical directions. They continued visiting other genre-related gigs, to find the right inspiration for their own compositions. A major influential moment was experiencing Balkan Beats in clubs like Melkweg Amsterdam and Aknathon, where they experienced the integration of world music, percussion and vocals with deep electronic productions as done by DJ Tommi and Raromski. With their project Mèraque, Jorick and Martin ended up bringing those elements, among some other musical wind directions, together on stage and in the studio.”

We're thrilled to announce our next upcoming release at the label with a multi-instrumental electronic live act that brings an organic and eastern sound with firm instrumental elements embedded. We present you: Mèraque

Mèraque was born from passion and curiosity. With a passion for the Balkans, and a curiosity for what might happen when you mix these sounds with influences from Latin America and the Middle East. They'll present you with energetic percussion, lively electronics, Turkish guitar and the melancholic accents of the clarinet. These elements merge into enchanting live sets full of improvisation, where the soul of the inevitably dancing audience and musicians connect.

The multi-instrumental collective was founded by Martin Grozdanoski & Jorick Bronius, both raised with a love for Oriental and Balkan folk music. Jorick, an experienced sound artist and percussionist, creates sophisticated rhythms and psychedelic sounds. As a clarinet and saxophone player who loves improvisation, Martin forms the melodic structures of the compositions. Onur Kaletas on guitar brings in virtuosic solo’s and brightens-up pads and harmonics. With her lyrical voice, vocalist Dilara Cugun gives a Turkish tint to the spectrum.

In the past Mèraque performed at Wildenburg (NL), Amsterdam Open Air festival (NL), Chateau Perchê (FR), and Ruigoord(NL). Mèraque released their music previously on Ohxala Records and we are thrilled that their next release will be represented by KROOKS Records !
