The Geghard Monastery in Armenia 🛕🇦🇲

I was blessed to personally visit the ancient Geghard Monastery. It was named after the spear that pierced the body of Christ on the cross. ✝️ Translated from Armenian, Geghard means “spearhead,” signifying the profound historical significance of this sacred site. Housing relics such as the spear, those of John the Baptist, and St. Andrew, Geghard's roots delve deep into the annals of time, boasting a rich history that spans over 1500 years. At present, the main relic of Geghard – the Longine’s Spear – is stored in the treasury of Echmiadzin, the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Legend has it that the monastery, founded shortly after Armenia embraced Christianity in 301 AD, began as a humble cave chapel, originally known as Ayrivank, meaning “cave monastery” in Armenian. Over time, this place of worship expanded, with the majestic Katoghike monastery standing tall since 1215, adding to the allure of this cultural marvel.

Geghard Monastery stands as a timeless testament to Armenia's spiritual heritage, beckoning travelers from across the globe to witness its enigmatic beauty and storied past. Uncover the secrets of this UNESCO World Heritage site and embark on a journey through history unlike any other.

The Sacred Mountains of Mount Ararat 🗻🏔️ are traditionally believed to be the resting place of Noah’s Ark. 📍🗺️🌏

Here in Armenia 🇦🇲, at the Arch of Charents, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the holy mountains.

En route to Garni, not far from the village of Vokhchabert, there stands an unremarkable arch. Architect Rafael Israelyan dedicated the monument to the famous Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents, who adored the beauty of Mount Ararat. The location was chosen precisely: from the arch, you can enjoy the best view of Mount Ararat. The Arch of Charents was one of the poet's favorite spots, where he sought inspiration.

A double stone arch stands atop a hill. As you step through the arch, you are greeted by the majestic mountain and an incredible landscape. The words from Charents' poem are engraved on the arch:

“Pass the whole world, there’s no summit as white as that of Ararat; Like glory road, unreachable, I love as well my Mount Massis!”

The Victory Park, Mother of Armenia Monumental Statue & Eternal Flame 🏞️🗽🔥

Located on the verdant Norksk height, Victory Park, or "Akhtanak" Park, commemorates the USSR's triumph in the Second World War and holds a special place in the hearts of Yerevan's citizens. Here, the "Mother Armenia" monument stands tall, symbolizing Armenia's enduring commitment to safeguarding its people. This sculpture depicts a woman wielding a sword and standing over a shield, embodying the spirit of the homeland.

Standing at a total height of 43.5 meters, the monument's pedestal houses a museum dedicated to the victory in the Second World War. At the forefront of the statue, an eternal flame burns on a granite platform, honoring the memory of the war's victims. Surrounding the statue, visitors will find displays of military vehicles.

Within the monument, the Ministry of Defense of Armenia operates a military museum. Adjacent to the monument lies the tomb of the "unknown soldier," a tribute to those who perished in the fight against fascism.

The park complex features numerous walkways, a picturesque pond, several cafes, and a variety of amusements and rides. Additionally, the park offers a sweeping panoramic view of downtown Yerevan.

I didn’t have a planned itinerary for my first day in Armenia, but something strange led me here. Only the next day did I discover that Armenia celebrates their Christmas on January 6, 2024 and I found myself at their biggest church, the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, on their Christmas Eve celebration. How lucky I was to witness this sacred event and even join the candle lighting ceremony. Such a nice, holy, and sacred experience. It is truly a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year here in Armenia! 🙏🏻🇦🇲🎄🥳
