Happy Birthday to Takashi "Tak" Shindo! Tak was one of the most prominent purveyors of that gorgeous genre known as Exotica, a magnificent and surreal style of music which took the sounds of cultures at the time unknown or mysterious and blended it into a swingy, sexy stew.

Happy Birthday to the late great Gram Parsons! Through his groundbreaking work with the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Byrds, the International Submarine Band, and as a solo artist, Gram Parsons single handedly created the country rock and alt. country genres.

A visionary whose personal demons took him from us far too soon, Parsons directly influenced the Rolling Stones' embrace of country styles circa Let it Bleed and Exile on Main Street.

Parsons was a passionate and incredibly gifted songcrafter with a honeyed, disarming voice that's capable of melting the heart of even the most hardened criminal.

His poignant music continues to strongly shape the Americana landscape, and we treasure his recordings that grace our catalog.

Happy Birthday to the late great Paul Tanner! A mere two days after the creation of the Electro-Theremin, Paul Tanner recorded Music For Heavenly Bodies, a lush, eerie, and atmospheric take on space music.

After the 1958 release, people around Hollywood took notice, and would lead to Tanner recording themes for My Favorite Martian, Lost in Space, and Dark Shadows. This work would secure for Tanner and his Electro-Theremin a place in the history books when he was contracted to record with the Beach Boys.

The iconic theremin sound from "Good Vibrations" came from the very same Electro-Theremin created for Music For Heavenly Bodies.

Quinteros cut a handful of jumping singles showing that if he’d had the right breaks, he could have altered history.

Quinteros’ Southern rockabilly influences are audible in his early singles, but they’re filtered through the more citified point of view of a San Francisco teen. And in the mid ‘60s, he reinvented himself as the frontman for the Au Go-Go’s, turning out a chiming, folk-rock flavored sound more in line with labelmates and fellow S.F.’ers the Beau Brummels.

Happy birthday to the iconic Hank Williams. We'll be celebrating with this slab from our catalog. Released in 1960, Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams is not quite an accurate title. Only four of the album's twelve tracks are Hank Williams' songs with all but one of the remaining tracks composed by Cash.
Whatever the title, this is a fantastic collection of early tracks from Sun, and it's our best way to honor Hank (without visiting our personal collections that is)!
