Lingering ice from January’s cold plunge still clings to the shore of Lake Michigan. Floating ice formation that resembled orbs and pancakes bob in the tide along the ice shelf.
The U.S. Coast Guard has cautioned people that no Great Lakes shoreline ice is ever completely safe to walk on. Wave action underneath the snow and ice can create holes and weak areas, which people can fall through.

Local photographer Tom Gifford captured the sight when a waterspout came ashore on Pere Marquette Beach on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. The waterspout dwarfed the trees along the beach. The International Centre For Waterspout Research said the potential is very high for waterspouts on the Great Lakes due to the cold airmass and relatively warm lakes.

Embrace winter with a lantern-lit hike at Ludington State Park. On Saturdays in January and February, the hikes begin at the park amphitheater and will feature a bonfire with marshmallows and hot chocolate.

For 40 years, the Mona Shores High School choir has been dazzling crowds as America’s Tallest Singing Christmas Tree. They perform shoulder-to-shoulder in a 67-foot high steel tree, spanning 15 tiers with some 25,000 LED lights. Built in 1869, the Nelson House is one of the oldest homes still standing in Muskegon. The historic building was facing demolition before being purchased by the city of Muskegon and moved from Jefferson St. to the Houston Historic District in July.
The city had posted the house for sale in September and bid proposals were closed November 21 with a full restoration planned. A recommendation to city commissioners is expected by the December 10 meeting.

Two Muskegon firefighters donned cold water rescue suits Tuesday to help a deer stuck in a swimming pool. The rescue took about 15 minutes. The Muskegon fire chief says after it was lifted out of the pool, the deer ran a short distance, laid down to rest and then took off. (Video provided by Austin Hruskach)
