I’m working with Starkson’s through a grief support program called Healing Horizons. Our goal is to help you understand the grieving process and to take steps toward healing after your loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. It is a very personal journey that can be made easier for you through sharing with others on the same path. Healing Horizons is offered to you at no charge by the Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel. We meet at The Confluence Hotel in Hastings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 9:30 - 11:00. Complimentary coffee, juice and a light breakfast are provided. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday July 23rd. If this is something that you might be interested in trying, simply respond to this email with your name and contact information. We just need a count for the restaurant. All are welcome. Our meetings are informal and comfortable. Bring a friend if you desire.

My Path to Healing
I sat in my living room, the silence echoing the emptiness I felt inside. It had been six months since my husband of 45 years, James, passed away suddenly. Every day felt like a battle to keep moving forward. Friends and family had been supportive, but there was a part of my journey through grief that felt intensely personal and isolating.

One evening in April, my sister, Ivana, visited me with a book in hand. "I found this at the bookstore and thought it might help," she said, handing over "A Journey in Grief" by Diane Davies. I was skeptical at first. I had read books on grief before, but none had truly resonated with my experience.

Reluctantly, I started reading. From the very first page, I felt an immediate connection. Davies’ gentle words and personal anecdotes mirrored my own feelings of loss, confusion, and the slow, painful process of healing. The book wasn't just a guide; it was a companion through the dark times. Davies’ insights into the stages of grief, coping mechanisms, and the importance of self-care helped me realize I wasn't alone in my struggle.

Through the book, I found practical advice that I began to integrate into my daily life. I started journaling my thoughts and emotions, which became a therapeutic outlet for my pain. I also joined a support group, as suggested by Diane Davies, where I met others who were navigating their own grief journeys. Sharing my story and listening to others brought a sense of solidarity and understanding.

As weeks turned into months, I noticed subtle changes. The heaviness in my heart began to lighten, and I started to find moments of peace and even joy. I learned that grief wasn't something to be conquered but embraced as part of my life's journey.

Recommendations for "A Journey in Grief" by Diane Davies:

1. **Reflective Journaling:** Use a journal to write down your thoughts and feelings as you read through the book. Reflect on how each chapter resonates with your personal experiences. Journaling can be a powerful tool to process emotions and track your healing journey.

2. **Join a Support Group:** Look for local or online support groups where you can share your experiences and listen to others. Davies emphasizes the importance of community and shared experiences in healing.

3. **Practice Self-Care:** Follow the self-care tips provided in the book. This could include activities like meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature. Taking care of your physical and emotional health is crucial during the grieving process.

4. **Read at Your Own Pace:** Grief is a highly individual experience, and there is no right or wrong way to go through it. Take your time with the book, and don't rush through the chapters. Allow yourself to absorb the content and reflect on it deeply.

5. **Seek Professional Help if Needed:** If you find that your grief is overwhelming and you're struggling to cope, consider seeking the help of a therapist or counselor. Professional support can provide additional strategies and coping mechanisms tailored to your needs.

6. **Connect with Loved Ones:** Share insights and passages from the book with friends or family members who are supportive. Sometimes discussing what you've read can open up new avenues for healing and understanding.

By following the recommendations above, readers can find ways to integrate the book's teachings into their lives, fostering healing and resilience.

Much thanks,
Emilia Dela Vega

A lesson for all of us from David Baldacci: "I'm not naive enough to think that I'll change a single mind today, or tomorrow or the the next day. The most eloquent orators in the world couldn't do that, and I'm certainly not at that level. But y'all just need to start listening to each other, talk things out. It takes a lot of work to be angry all the time. And what good ever comes out of it? What good comes out of hating folks for no reason? Now kindness and respect go a long, long way. We learned that in school and at church, and those lessons should last a lieftime and maybe we need to get back to them. And then maybe when enough of us have done that, we might have a decent shot of being united for a long time to come. Now I don't know about you, but I think what we have here is worth fighting for. At least that's my hope and prayer. And maybe it should be yours too." Jack Lee from A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci
