“My first vintage lever, and my favourite. Robust, timeless, and absolutely gorgeous, this one is precious to me. I try not to use it often because I want it to last, although I’m sure I can’t do much more damage to something that has been around 70 years. It is one of the first 1,000 made.”

Pranoy Thipaiah is a coffee producer and processor, and together with his father Ajoy, he owns and operates , a coffee plantation and estate in the Western Ghats mountains of Karnataka, India.

Our very own Will Davies was recently able to make the trip to visit Pranoy at work on the farm. With the harvest in full swing, he let us tag along for the day, teaching us much about his approach to running the farm—and his other passion: football (soccer to our cousins across the Atlantic)—along the way.

Water, the universal life-giver, is something that we all require and yet which often goes ignored in café settings.

But, it seems to us that it can in fact be no less photogenic an ingredient in the coffee experience. For Standart Issue 35, we set out to prove this point by traipsing about the cafés of Paris, whose service culture is unapologetic about getting every last detail right.

Vlad Demonenko (.enko) may call Berlin his home now, but his mission to share Ukraine’s story through coffee remains unwavering.

Originally trained as a doctor, Vlad dedicated himself to volunteering at a burns center in Dnipro, alongside providing essential food and coffee to those affected by the conflict. Despite enduring the war’s turmoil for four months, Vlad and his family ultimately concluded that staying in Ukraine posed too great a risk.

At the moment, he is developing a project of his own, .Coffee, a small roastery focused on specialty micro lots, and we’re bringing you his story in our latest issue.

Dalla Corte’s Zero, first introduced in 2019, completely revolutionized the way the coffee industry approached design, technology, and innovation. Its immense success propelled the company into a new era, and now they are taking things to the next level with the Zero Plus.

Now, baristas can tailor their shots with customizable flow rates and the ability to save and share signature recipes. Imagine the freedom to express your creativity and consistently reproduce your finest brews!

The correlation between the coffee you love and the wine you love lies in the intricate interplay of sensory experiences and flavor profiles. Both coffee and wine offer a diverse spectrum of tastes, aromas, and textures that can evoke similar sensations and preferences in enthusiasts.

So one can’t help but ask theirself: what type of coffee would a devotee of Cabernet Sauvignon be most likely to enjoy, and what glass would a lover of natural Ethiopian Wush Wush tend to choose at their local wine bar?

Inspired by this very notion, embarked on an experiment, delving into the question: how closely aligned are preferences in coffee and wine? Uncover his findings in our latest issue.

Micah Sherer () has pretty much run the gamut of coffee roles, having been a barista, roaster, café manager, green seller, and green buyer. His coffee journey began in the US and has taken him around the world, working in Colombia and Brazil as a sales rep and in Ethiopia as a buyer.

These days he can be found putting his experience to good use in Brighton, UK, where he runs Skylark (.coffee), a not-for-profit roastery and band of all-round good guys.

We caught up with Micah to pick his mind about the problems that beset the coffee industry, how neurodiversity can affect performance, and how roasters can and should do better.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Fibonacci sequence, a pattern famously occurs in the natural world, the nautilus (thought to be the first life form capable of navigation) being a perfect example, and it’s employed in applications from architecture to stock markets, with traders sometimes using the sequence to predict future movements of assets.

The rationale behind this is that human behaviour, which drives market movements, can exhibit patterns akin to natural phenomena, and thus the Fibonacci sequence’s ratios can be detected in the timing of cycles, peaks, and troughs in financial markets.

But can it solve the problem of terrible filter baskets? thinks so.

Stockholm, one of the most criminally underrated cities in Europe, is a strange, beautiful, even alien place to visit for , who visited on behalf of Standart from the extremely—how can we put this?— dissimilar Rome.

With its immaculate buildings, the constant spectacle of surrounding water, and lessons in Scandinavianism, it is a city that thrives on the contrasts between contemporary minimalism and age-old elegance.

And, of course, it’s a place where coffee is not just a drink; it’s a way of life. Read the full city profile in Standart Issue 34.
