Another “balmy” early December morning. Yup - temps were in the mid/upper 30s early this morning, which is warmer than the average high for this time of year. Temps are expected to remain above average through the weekend but then turn colder Monday.
If you haven’t heard, Mayo has altered its employee covid vaccine mandate. Today HAD been the deadline for all employees to have at least one shot or they faced unpaid leave. If they were still unvaxxed by Jan. 3rd, they faced termination. Due to ongoing strains on staff at many Mayo sites, it was decided to issue a “final warning” today to the unvaxxed but the January deadline is still facing them. Mayo has granted an unknown number of exemptions due to religious and medical reasons. Mayo says more than 90% of its entire workforce has received at least one covid shot. All the Mayo docs and workers I know are vaxxed and most support the mandate. When I asked one of the docs why some people don’t want to get vaccinated, he said he thinks it’s because some people just don’t want to be told to do something. That may be but aren’t we pretty much “told what to do” nearly all the time? We’re told what to do at work, we’re told to follow the rules of the road while driving, we follow the rules while in public and private venues, we pay our taxes and if we’re married - well, you know. I no longer converse with people about the vaccines because most have made up their minds where they stand on the issue so it makes no sense to talk about it. I am fully vaxxed and boosted and expect to get more shots in the future until Mr Covid is no longer a health threat. I will not criticize those who decide not to get vaxxed but I have yet to hear a valid reason for their decision. My mother is in the unvaxxed group and my efforts to convince her to get a shot were futile so I finally threw in the towel. So far, she has avoided the virus but I do worry about what will happen if

Goooood morning! I took a few days of PTO (use ‘em or lose ‘em, y’know) and spent the weekend in the Cities with our sons. There was a bit more snow there than here but it was nearly gone when we headed home Sunday. We’re in for a breezy and warmer day today but cooler air will return for the rest of the week.
My wife went to a large holiday craft show while we were in the Cities and was blown away by the huge turnout. She and my #2 son’s girlfriend stayed although they were a bit uneasy because of the huge turnout in a smaller setting. Now she is dealing with a runny nose and hopes she wasn’t exposed to Mr Covid while at the show. She hasn’t had her booster yet and this may hasten her decision to get one. Although I am vaxed and boosted, I still intend to shy away from large gatherings in small indoor spaces for the time being and do not plan on getting onto an airplane any time soon, mainly because I could not wear a mask for several hours (airport and flight time combined). During my regular visit with my doc last month, we chatted about the pandemic - where it is and where it’s going. He thinks there may be one more surge because of winter and then feels it should be under control by next spring. But he and others don’t think it will vanish and will be treated like the annual influenza season. Which means annual shots. I’m okay with that but it would be much better if we could get rid of Mr Covid permanently. Can I get an amen?
Stay safe and have a good day.
I took the morning vid during a recent walk through the Rose Garden in Minneapolis. I’m sure this winged wonder is somewhere a lot warmer by now!

Good morning! Hope y’all had a good Memorial Day weekend! It was a bit cool and wet at times but it sure was good to feel “normal” again, right? Some out-of-town friends spent part of the weekend with us and we took a drive on Saturday to some spots “on the other side” of the Mississippi. All the stops we made had large and unmasked crowds and smiles were seen everywhere. What a diff from a year ago. My mother’s side of the family held its traditional Memorial Day gathering and attendance was pretty good. We had to cancel last year - for the first time in about 50 years. Now we hope to start another 50 year run!
We noticed something during Saturday’s drive. US Flags were seen in large numbers in every small town we drove through and organized events in honor of Memorial Day were also evident. We noticed a lot of flags on mailboxes and in front of homes in Rochester and it made me feel good. As many problems this country has been and still is facing, a lot of people are still proud to live here and pay tribute to “those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.” We can never say “thank you” enough and we should also be thankful there are patriots who truly love their country and are willing to serve. How about a toast to those who are still serving - and to those who are getting ready to return home? The lyrics from one of my favorite songs come to mind:
“Fill my glass high the time has come. I’m going back to the place that I love.”
Have a great day!
The morning video was taken in a Zumbrota park Saturday.

Good morning, good morning, good MORNING! I was able to mow the lawn for the first time in 2021 yesterday. Some parts really needed a good trim while others were still on the short side. There aren’t as many bare spots this year as past years. I was also able to plant some snap peas. I haven’t grown those in years and can’t wait to start popping the pods into my mouth!
Mayo has announced another large downtown project and as I drove by the site yesterday it struck me how much has changed in the downtown core area the past few years and more change is on the way. Yet another apartment project is being planned along 2nd St (near the former Just Rite store) and I’m sure more may come - if there is any room left. And downtown landscaping plans are moving ahead, including a major one on 2nd Ave SW - in front of our radio station. I am left wondering if there will be enough watering holes and restaurants for all the people who will be living downtown and all those who head there for a night out. Perhaps food trucks will fill the gap if needed? One thing I would like to see more than anything else in the downtown is a large public green space with benches, restrooms, etc. I suppose I could wander down to Soldiers Field Park - but, that’s not really “downtown” - yet.
Have a good day.
The morning vid is a shot of the workers who are putting up the building across the street from our station. They do this every morning before starting work, right around 7 o’clock.

Good Monday morning! What a crappy weekend, huh? I almost fell off my chair yesterday afternoon when I looked out by back door and saw a snow burst. What the? We are still waiting for our tulips to bloom. They are loaded and ready to open but they apparently need more heat and/or rain. Speaking of rain - the precip total this month in the Rochester area is about 2 inches below normal. We may - MAY - get a good soaking tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed!
My wife and I had a warm experience Saturday evening. We had just returned home when the doorbell sounded and there were some neighbors - a younger couple with their sweet little twins (boy/girl). The little girl bravely handed by wife a big plate with two homemade cookies, complete with frosted smiley faces. She was so proud and all smiles and then blurted out that her “mommy had made them. “ My wife has periodically given the 2 kids little trinkets so I’m sure this was a payback of some sort. It was a memory-making moment, for sure. And the cookie was perfect with my Sunday morning coffee.
Have a good Monday and enjoy the warmer weather!
