Today, I have a victory worth celebrating!
For any parent with a picky eater on the autism spectrum, you’ll totally get this.

For the first time in....7 years, I managed to introduce a new food to my son, and he actually ate it voluntarily: 2 pieces of turkey/cheese sandwich! All of this in one time, not 1000 tries (it took 1 year of constant tries for him to eat pancakes).

Of course, there’s a little trick involved; he knows he gets a reward afterward: a few minutes of Minecraft on my phone. He loves that game so much that he was willing to dive into something completely new: a mix of textures and flavors (cheese, turkey breast, and bread!).

I think the last time he tried cheese, he was 12-13 months old. Didn't want any afterwards. Bread, he stopped eating it around 2 years old, turkey breast, it's his first time.

Honestly, I don’t care if I’m feeling worn out.
This unexpected win gives me a boost to keep going.

Just last week, I cut Emmanuel’s hair for the first time in 8 years (yeah! 8...) without a single objection! Once again, the promise of a reward helped him see that it wasn’t a punishment. Understanding that he’d feel happier afterward (he could finally SEE!! The hair was in his face big time) was the best reward for me.

Sure, some milestones with autistic kids can take years to achieve. But that’s the reality we need to embrace without guilt or pressure to conform to social expectations. Let’s give our kids the chance to shine by letting them learn and grow at THEIR own pace and in THEIR own way.
