LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF

Pursuing my dream career

Dear younger Caroline,

I want to take you back a little, just before you got the reception job. At your lowest point in your life, just before you got the job at the reception, I remember you booked an appointment to see the managing Director at your dream organization. After so many hours of waiting, you were allowed to see him (I am forever grateful to that secretary….) and you presented your papers and told him all you wanted was a job on radio.

I remember you telling the then MD that you would not leave his office unless he gave you a favorable answer. After some back and forth, he promised to look into it. I remember you told him all you have ever wanted was to be on radio. You were so bold then, I wonder what happened to this young girl?

Fast forward months later, you would go back to the MD’s office for formal introductions as the new Reception team by the then PR manager. The MD recognized you and you told him you got another job- as a receptionist. I remember him asking you, didn’t you want a radio job? Which you answered yes you did. He was surprised that you had “settled” for that position but you assured him that you would find your way to the newsroom someday.

Working at the reception wasn’t easy Caroline, there are people who made you feel like you were lesser than they were, but that didn’t bother you because you knew, deep down your assignment was much bigger than anyone of them thought.

The fire of using your voice to tell stories was almost consuming, sitting at the reception watching news, listening to narrations of stories from those who had “made it before you” made you yearn for it even more. You practiced at home every other day, in front of a mirror, I remember you younger Caroline “presenting news” for an imaginary audience in your house, the fire to live your dream out loud was consuming you and you had to do something about it.

So one day you took a shot at it and decided to do a voice over for a TV program, that voice over would be what would be your turning point. Everyone wanted to know the person behind that voice. Every time you voiced a script the same question of the face behind the voice was asked.

The person behind the voice was however a receptionist. A receptionist whose time to the newsroom and time to make use of her God given talent of telling stories through her voice had come. The story to being a TV presenter and eventually transitioning from the reception to the “all mighty“ newsroom was not easy for you younger Caroline, but you had to step into what you believed was your calling. But boy was that hard.

I remind you that journey in the next letter.

Yours Faithfully,

Older Caroline.

LETTER TO MY YOUNGER SELF

Dear younger Caroline,

I know this is almost strange. Who knew the older me would go back in time to remind you where you have come from.

I owe you so many answered dreams, you had such a huge vision for your life, marriage, kids, success in your career but the older you will tell you, life is not as easy and it’s not as straight and narrow as you saw it about a decade ago.

Writing this I didn’t know where to start, but how about we start with the positive. Do you remember as a young girl hustling in Mlango Kubwa. That little single room you lived in. You lived next to the toilets and bathrooms which were shared by about 15 people living on your floor. The rent then was about ksh.2500. You hawked fresh juice in Huruma to make ends meet, but no, the ends did not meet. You had to supplement it will some acting gigs on radio theatre. On a good month you earned 1500 shillings from acting. But deep down you knew this was not sustainable and the reality of going back home to shags scared you. You had a dream to one day be a journalist, it was your child hood dream. But in what seemed like such a huge city, you knew no one having come to Nairobi for the first time after college, you had no godfather, and all you had were your diploma papers and yes, a big dream.

I remember there was a day when tarmacking for a better job got the better of you. You felt hopeless, I remember the younger you thinking I wish I was hit by a vehicle, be in a hospital and look forward to recovery. At least I would be looking forward to something, instead of the constant hustle. There are days you slept hungry, made endless trips to and from town on foot to look for work. Then one day came a silver lining.

You once saw an advertisement in this organization where you went to do the radio acting gigs. It was a job as a receptionist. And you knew this was your chance. It didn’t matter that you were a trained journalist, the opportunity to work at this organization for you would lead you to your goal. You applied for the job and later you were invited for the interview. I remember on this day going to a cyber in town, it was a favorite hung out spot because the owner allowed you to flip through newspapers to look for possible vacancies. You went back to this place to ask the cyber attendant what possible questions you should expect on the interview and this really did help you eventually. On the day of the interview, you impressed the panelist and you got a job.

That was probably one of your most proud moments, you young Caroline got a job! It might not have been your dream job, but you knew this was your opportunity. An opportunity you did not waste. I remember the tears of joy, you would finally move out of the single room and to Zimmerman to a one bedroomed house (rent in my new place was ksh.5000). You could now afford a decent meal, you could pay your rent, you could afford accommodation for your siblings when they came to Nairobi, thinking about this today, I am a little teary eyed. This was a great moment in your life then .You almost made it.

The journey to the newsroom where the older you now works as an editor would begin. How about I remind you this journey in the next letter.

Yours Faithfully,

Older Caroline.

With all the uncertainties of the year that was, am blessed to be here, to be turning a year older I have learnt not to take anything for granted, to be grateful for health, life, my family and friends, being able to pay my bills. It's been a year of lots of lessons. I look to the future with lots of hope however, knowing this year is here for me to fulfill God's purpose in my life. Here's to life, love and lots of laughter in the coming year.

guys!!

The mantra for today resonates with me because a lot of times I have not taken opportunities based on fear and other insecurities. I'm here to remind you that you are enough and don't let your self limiting beliefs deter you from making it in life. You are capable! You are enough!
