Hi friends, Carl here. The Encountering Silence podcast is moving to a new home on the web — we were hosted by a small podcast start-up, but they have decided to shutter their operation at the end of this month. So we've had to find a new home. We are in the process of making that transition now, and we'll let you know when the transition is complete. There may be a temporary period in which our links on Facebook etc. stop working, but we'll post new links once we're settled into our new home. In the meantime, you can always access us through Apple Podcasts or Spotify — those links should stay consistent even during our transition:

https://open.spotify.com/show/67kCOIWrHvwxb2c1DtOi3V

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/encountering-silence/id1310186933

We'll have a new episode in the near future: an interview with Benedictine scholar Laura Swan; and of course, most of our episodes are "evergreen" content so we hope you'll explore the links above and listen (or re-listen) to the conversations we've recorded with our amazing guests!

This revised and expanded edition offers a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, experiential union with God. 'The Christian of the future will be a mystic-or will not exist.' This word of warning from theologian Karl Rahner was uttered half a century ago, and today, Christianity is indeed in...

What is the relationship between language and silence? Between words and truth-telling? How can we foster a more truly contemplative relationship with the way we speak to one another? These are the kinds of questions that informed this episode of Encountering Silence, in which Carl, Cassidy and Kevin welcome author and spiritual teacher Marilyn McEntyre for a conversation informed by her mindful writing on topics such as language, peacemaking, and authenticity.

Our very own Carl McColman is mentioned in this piece from the Christian Century by Jessica Mesman:

“Writer and spiritual director Carl McColman offers an online course on the anonymous book Meditations on the Tarot, a classic text of Christian mysticism with an afterword by Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar (a copy of which can be seen in a photo of a stack of books on Pope John Paul II’s desk).”

I wonder how Pamela Colman Smith worked it out in reverse, led by her own creativity straight to the Catholic Church—the place I’ve tried to leave.

“Soon people will speak of silence as they do about a fairy tale. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation. Cars, airplanes, radios, and atomic bombs are the latest major triumphs of progress. Man no longer has anything essential to do, but he wants to do it at top speed and with superhuman noise. He seeks recreation and never realizes that the robot steering him is actually driving him into catastrophe and nothingness. Tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation.”

–Jean Arp (1887–1966), "Sacred Silence," translated from French and German by Joachim Neugroschel, 1972

"It’s not your imagination. Life really is noisier than it’s ever been... And it’s not just auditory noise. It’s informational noise, too. The average person in the United States consumes at least five times more information on any given day than she did a generation ago."

The Noise Control Act of 1972 sought to give Americans the right to a reasonably quiet environment. We need something similar for our digital world.

Today, we go back into our past episodes to take a walk with Ando McDonnell who has recently been navigating some health issues. We ask that as you listen to her wisdom and truth, would you also say a prayer and/or offer some love and light her way.

About us...

NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH ITUNES, GOOGLE PLAY, and other Podcast Subscription services, with hosts Carl McColman, Cassidy Hall, and Kevin Johnson.

“Encountering Silence” explores the beauty and importance of silence from many angles, not just the religious/spiritual/mystical, but also reflecting on the psychology of silence, silence and the arts, silence and politics, silence and education… the list goes on. For a topic that we often don’t devote a lot of time and energy to, silence certainly has an important (if quiet!) role in all our lives.
