The Review: As someone who has been in a committed relationship for 19 years and married for 15 of those years, I was eager to read Thompson’s book … for many reasons. Sustaining a long-term love is no small task and as someone who believes that everything worth having is worth working for, my marriage definitely falls into that category. Thompson’s book is poignant and takes the reader on her personal journey of love, heartbreak, triumph, overcoming challenges and finding your way to the most important and fulfilling love, self-love. Thompson’s book reminded me of the things I need to avoid doing and potential red flags to pay attention to if I want to keep my relationship healthy and thriving. The book also inspires hope for when things fall apart and you have to accept letting go.

Today’s speaker program with several classes of 5th graders was truly rewarding and so much fun! I love introducing careers in diplomacy/foreign relations to new audiences and making it more accessible and less abstract. I also love talking about storytelling and the power of writing … but mostly I love hearing from the students themselves, they were so inspiring and engaged and had excellent questions. Teachers y’all are the real MVPs and diplomats of the classroom … you have my deepest respect and admiration for the life changing work you are doing. With so much going on in the world, from war to mass shootings, to simply surviving the daily struggles and pressures of life, it is important to celebrate the wins, no matter how small. At least that’s what I try to do and it helps me maintain during these difficult times.

So, today I’m sharing that despite not being a writer, just someone who writes, I was just accepted into the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) as a professional member! This is a big deal for me, since it is by application only and decided by a committee of professionals. I also proudly joined the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), which was long overdue.

Small things in the grand scheme, but things that help keep me balanced, able to overcome, and moving forward. 😌

Stress is typically a condition we don’t recognize until things are far out of hand. Whilst some can manage it by smoking cannabis out of an AFM glass b**g, others are left with high blood pressure and a prematurely bald head. We may say we’re “stressed” when someone asks how we’re doing, but often the signs of truly being stressed out show up in ways we don’t even suspect, and that’s especially true of familial stress. Often, family stress can be caused by one individual. After a busy day at work, one member of the family can bring their stress home with them and lower the mood of other family members.
