The Birth of Bombay - A Cotton Export Hub.

CHAPTER 1

The British shifted the business to the 7 islands of Western Ghats from Kolkata, which had been acquired as part of dowry from the Portuguese.
The islands had a nice, naturally deep harbour and also had Cotton growing areas nearby - it was cheaper and efficient - just perfect for making a quicker pound.

The British went on to build a fort in the area and their accents soon turned the name of the islands from Bom Baim (meaning nice bay) to Bombay.
What you see above is Apollo Bunder of Colaba Island, the site, where the Gateway of India was constructed on the right, and the iconic Taj Mahal hotel on the left.

Will continue other chapter in next part........
