Historical photo of the day: Palestinian politician and legal scholar, Hanan Ashrawi, leading a protest at Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, 1986.

Dr. Hanan Ashrawi is a distinguished Palestinian leader, legislator, activist, and scholar who served as a member of the Leadership Committee and as an official spokesperson of the Palestinian delegation to the Middle East peace process.

Born to a Christian Palestinian family, Hanan Ashrawi lived in Tiberias before fleeing with her family during the 1948 Nakba and settling in Ramallah. When the 1967 war broke out, she was a student in Beirut and was then denied entry back into Palestine for 6 years. It is there that her political activities started: she became the spokesperson for the General Union of Palestinian Students in Lebanon, helped organize women’s revolutionary groups and served as a guide to foreign reporters visiting Palestinian refugee camps.

When Hanan returned to the occupied West Bank in 1973, she began her career at Birzeit University, where she established the Department of English. Beginning in the 1990s, Ashrawi was a member of the PLO’s Leadership Committee, serving as the official spokesperson of the Palestinian delegation during the Madrid Peace Conference of 1991.

Making history as the first woman to hold a seat in the highest executive body in Palestine, she was elected as member of the Executive Committee of the PLO in 2009 and 2018. As a civil society activist, she founded the Independent Commission for Human Rights, MIFTAH and AMAN.

Today, she serves on the advisory and international boards of several global, regional and local organizations, and is the recipient of global awards and several academic accolades, including the French decoration, “d’Officier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur” in 2006 and the 2005 Mahatma Gandhi International Award for Peace and Reconciliation.

CJPME STATEMENT: Canada’s decision to join the US-led military operation in the Red Sea represents an alarming escalation of conflict, and risks pushing us further into a regional war. Rather than joining the US in protecting Israeli interests, Canada should focus on protecting Palestinian civilians from indiscriminate slaughter by pressuring for a ceasefire and imposing an arms embargo on Israel.

For several weeks, the Yemeni Houthis have been firing projectiles at Israeli-linked civilian cargo ships in the Bab el-Mandeb strait and the Red Sea. While the attacks have not caused any casualties, this has had a major economic impact, forcing at least 12 shipping companies to suspend their routes. The Houthis have stated that their goal is to pressure Israel to end its war and siege of Gaza, after which their attacks will end.

Canada should be pushing for an immediate ceasefire and political negotiations that would bring an end to the hostilities in both Gaza and the Red Sea. Instead, the purpose of the US-led naval force is to reduce the pressures on Israel and bolster its capacity to continue waging war on Gaza. This is the opposite of supporting a ceasefire, it is providing military cover for genocide while becoming directly involved in escalating the war.

✅ Success: The Toronto Sun was forced to walk back fabricated accusations against pro-Palestine protesters!

The notorious right-wing journalist had accused pro-Palestine protesters of “threatening to kill our police.” Warmington’s article contradicted the Toronto Sun’s own reporting on the incident from the same day, which made clear that one protester at a shopping mall in Toronto had a heated exchange with another person. Police were merely standing between them. Warmington made it sound like a mob of protesters were threatening the police. The police were not the target of threats. The truth was obvious in the video, and the police confirmed that they were not threatened. It was an example of a journalist trying to make a story fit into his pre-existing anti-Palestinian biases.

Warmington’s lies were so rampant that on December 19, the article was given a new headline and significantly re-written after our complaint. The article no longer makes the false claim that protesters were threatening the police and was toned down. The article still cites numerous Tweets that spread the lie that protesters were threatening to kill police, showing just how rampant misinformation is online and how little accountability there is.
