Kamran Akmal hammers PCB, accuses board of causing 'international mockery' for not allowing fans in Bangladesh Test

"The second Test match will be played in Karachi. So I think you know that there is a renovation going on in Karachi. They are preparing a stadium for the Champions Trophy. So it will be a joke of Pakistan that Test matches are being played in Pakistan without a crowd. And we don’t just have 2-3 stadiums; we also have Faisalabad Stadium. We could have played there too; it is a top-class stadium. So much cricket has happened there."

"There is a stadium in Multan. And you know that Multan Stadium is very good. And the crowd also comes there. So you know that this is your stadium; you could have put another Test match at one of these two venues. So it would have been good. So I think it will be an international mockery of our cricket. These things should not happen."

MAX60 CEO Barthley shares vision for tournament | Podcast Ep 5 🎙️

The MAX60 T10 tournament launched on Sunday, August 18 in the Cayman Islands featuring stars such as David Warner, Chris Lynn, and Thisara Perera. It’s the brainchild of Dario Barthley, cricket administrator and promoter in the West Indies, and CEO of BMP Sports, which owns MAX60.

Dario is best known throughout the cricketing world as the former Media Officer for the West Indies Men's Cricket Team. However, he also has extensive experience in running tournaments (Antigua’s long-running Cool & Smooth T20 tournament) and franchise teams (team manager in the CPL), which he leveraged into founding MAX60.

The MAX60 packs 25 games into eight days. Inaugural teams are T10 Abu Dhabi Champions New York Strikers, Caribbean Giants, Grand Cayman Stingrays, Boca Raton Trailblazers and Miami Lions. Broadcast partners for this first edition include Flow Sports in the Caribbean, Willow TV in North America, and Sony Sports in India

Dario joined us on the Business of Cricket podcast to talk about the week-long MAX60 tournament, and the professional journey, unique to West Indies cricket, that got him there.

Cricket Australia announces seven stellar years of cricket 🏏🇦🇺

The 150th Anniversary Test Match at the MCG is among the highlights of Cricket Australia’s (CA) confirmed allocation of men’s international Test match hosting rights over the next seven seasons.

Australia and England will meet at the MCG in March 2027 in a one-off celebration of the first Test played in March 1877. It follows the enormously successful 1977 Centenary Test which Australia won, like the first Test, by 45 runs.

The awarding of hosting rights for select men’s international Tests, one-day internationals, T20Is and other matches across the next seven summers (2024-25 to 2030-31) is the culmination of a series of strategic partnerships between CA and State and Territory Governments on behalf of Australian Cricket to provide greater certainty for fans and communities, and to grow cricket events across the country.

Government investment in cricket is crucial to ensure Australia’s national teams continue to produce amazing performances in great venues. Local and travelling fans enjoy brilliant experiences at our matches and host cities and communities benefit economically and socially.

Steve Smith uncertain about T20I future, seeks IPL spot 🏏

Steve Smith is uncertain about his future in Australia’s T20I team and is focused on improving his game to earn a return. He was not included in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 or the series against England and Scotland.

Smith last played T20Is in February and was not chosen for the Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies, where Australia did not advance to the semi-finals. Despite David Warner's retirement, Smith was overlooked in favor of younger players like Cooper Connolly and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

“In terms of international T20s, I don't know what's going on there. They've obviously got some people they want to bring in, and that's fine. I understood the way that they wanted to stack up for the World Cup, with all the strong guys that smack it miles. I understood that. I'm not that fussed. I'll just go about my business, keep trying to improve and get better,” said Smith

In July, Steve Smith led the Washington Freedom to their first Major League Cricket (MLC) title, scoring 336 runs at a strike rate of 148.67. He was named Player of the Match for his 52-ball 88 in the final against the San Francisco Unicorns.

Although Smith hasn't played in the IPL since 2021 and worked as a broadcaster during this year's tournament, he remains confident about his ability to return to the ten-team competition.

“I'd certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I'll be throwing my name in the hat, and we'll see how we go. I feel like in every opportunity I've had in T20 cricket recently and franchise stuff, I've played quite nicely. So hopefully I just keep putting my name up there and enjoying it.”

Smith is keen to play for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL) in January after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, he might miss the finals due to Australia's tour of Sri Lanka in February 2025.

Stuart Broad becomes the official brand ambassador for Fitzdares 🏏

Fitzdares has announced a partnership with cricket legend Stuart Broad, appointing him as the company’s official brand ambassador.

Broad, one of England’s most celebrated Test cricketers and the second-highest all-time Test wicket-taker for England, is known for his exceptional bowling career.

Under this new partnership, Broad will represent Fitzdares for the next two years, leveraging his sporting legacy and personal appeal to strengthen the brand’s image.

Fitzdares members will enjoy exclusive access to Broad’s insights through monthly blogs, video content, and personal appearances at Fitzdares Club events.

William Woodhams, Fitzdares CEO, said: “For years, we’ve been looking for someone to be the face of the business and at last, we’ve got our man! Fitzdares is all about pedigree, sporting excellence and we also love a bit of mischief so who better than Stuart Broad to represent us?”

“A true legend of his sport, he’s charming, charismatic and shares our love for the game. In bowling terms, this really is an absolute jaffa!”

The partnership also includes a charitable element, with Fitzdares pledging to support The Broad Appeal, a charity dedicated to raising awareness and funds for Motor Neurone Disease. Fitzdares will provide Broad with a monthly £500 ($638) betting allowance, with all profits from his bets going to the charity.

Broad remarked: “Fitzdares is quirky, smart, and like to do things a bit differently. Ultimately, they play the game the right way and their members share my passion for elite sport. I can’t wait to get stuck in and help keep up their unique and personal approach.”

This agreement is Fitzdares’ first sports sponsorship in a while, following previous partnerships in football and racing. The bookmaker’s most prominent sports partnership is with nearby Fulham FC.

Ian Chappell cautions CA, ECB, and others as IPL teams gain stakes in T20 leagues 🏏

"The trend of successful companies having a greater say in the running of the game is increasing rapidly as IPL owners already own large stakes in T20 teams playing in the UAE, USA, South Africa, and the Caribbean. The shrewd owners are also starting to sign top-rated players to longer contracts and that should be a warning to cricket administrations. The better players could become beholden to an IPL owner rather than their own cricket board. That is when conflict of interest becomes a divisive issue."

"This isn't a surprise as the game in most countries desperately needs money and the IPL owners are financially flush. Cricket administrators must accept the blame for not producing a long-term blueprint for the game a couple of decades ago. That way they could at least have had a viable plan for the game to deal with this issue. That is unless cricket administrators worldwide are convinced the future is purely the T20 game run by rich franchises."

Towards a new understanding of sports infrastructure in India 🇮🇳🏟️

Guest Post by

The Sports sector has been talking BIG these days about creating a sporting infrastructure. Let us 1st understand that in India what constitutes a sporting infra and dynamics involved alongwith:-

1) The concrete Structure, with or without floodlights (popularly known as STADIUM) Surrounding a ground / indoor hall / group of sporting facilities inclusive or exclusive of gym / pool / sauna / steam etc……In a country now crowded by 1.5 Billion headcounts such structures becoming scarce solely due to space constraints. Metros almost dried up for new facilities and top of it old facilities are badly managed or seek significant effort in transformation post fighting out with all geopolitical & statutory odds, to be termed as a “World Class Infra”. B & C class cities still got a little potential but lack of connectivity & paying potential is hindering such new infrastructure.

2) A Sports Team / Franchisee — Where you just own the playing and commercial rights of close to max 2 dozen human athletes for a max period of 1–4 months and bulk of it gets changed by next season with no control on them once the league Finals happens.

Aakash Chopra opens up on Impact Player rule in IPL 🏏🇮🇳

"I think the impact player should stay. The good all-rounder will make the cut. If you are not that good, then, so be it. Sayed Mushtaq Ali, Vijay Hazare Trophy, improve your skill in that. And as soon as you are eligible for IPL the teams will wholeheartedly allow you to bowl and bat. Because everyone wants an all-rounder. Everyone does. Even after the impact player rule. Because those who don't have it, they struggle. Rajasthan Royals is an example. Punjab as well (as they play) 6 batters, 5 bowlers. To do that, an all-rounder has a lot of value. But an all-rounder should be good. No mediocrity. No illusory all-rounder. That's what I feel."

“India’s tour of Australia commercially comparable to the Ashes,” says Hockley

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley described India’s upcoming five-Test series in Australia as ‘commercially comparable to the Ashes,’ as reported by Hindustan Times. The series is set to begin on November 22 at Perth Stadium.

A home series against India is a significant element of CA’s AUD$ 1.5 billion broadcast deal with Foxtel and Seven network. The large Indian diaspora and the commercial appeal of the visiting players also contribute to opportunities in tourism, trade, and investment.

The series is highly anticipated, as the top two teams on the World Test Championship table face off, with India aiming for a historic third consecutive series win in Australia after their victories in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

“The Border Gavaskar Trophy and the Ashes are both massive tours on the Australian cricket calendar and are largely comparable in commercial terms, with fantastic crowds and huge broadcast audiences for each. Ticket sales from India are already six times greater than for the previous non-COVID series,” said Hockley.

Sarfaraz Ahmed backs PCB's decision to appoint Saud Shakeel as new Test Vice-Captain 🏏🇵🇰

"First of all, congratulations to Saud. To be vice captain of the national team is a huge honour. It’s a commendable initiative by the cricket board to groom such a junior player who has been leading at lower levels. Saud has been captaining since the U-19 level and has led Sindh to the T20 championship title. It’s a positive initiative that domestic performers and Pakistan Shaheens are getting opportunities. Some players have already made their place, and we hope that more will get their chance in the future. It’s a good sign that domestic performers are being valued and becoming part of Pakistan’s senior team.”

Rohit Sharma joins forces with True Elements to introduce a licensed brand 🤝

Rohit Sharma, exclusively managed by RISE Worldwide, is set to become the ambassador for True Elements while also leading the RS by True Elements brand. This partnership involves True Elements and Rohit Sharma collaborating to co-create and market products under the RS brand name, with RISE Worldwide managing the entire partnership.

As one of the most successful cricket captains and players, Rohit Sharma is now expanding his impact beyond the field by joining forces with True Elements to launch a licensed brand. RS by True Elements is aimed at co-building a distinctive product line that marks a significant collaboration in the Indian food industry.

Rohit Sharma, Partner and Ambassador, True Element said, “This is a good time and opportunity to launch RS by True Elements, where, today, the focus for consumers is to know what they are eating. I have been a fan of True Elements, as they have stayed committed to their values and business philosophy. The partnership is aimed at building an alternative product line for consumers to make their preferred choice and be more aware of what is being offered to them.”

“This is the first time a cricketer is licensing a health food brand in India - a first for the ecosystem. Given the authenticity that Rohit has in cricket, we believe it would help us reinforce our commitment to being ‘True’ and honest with our customers and help us scale rapidly. With Rohit starting a brand with us, it reiterates his confidence in us as a brand and our principles, which is a big motivation for the entire team. Am sure the joint effort will be a good benchmark for the rest of the industry” says Puru Gupta, co-founder and chief executive officer, True Elements.

R Sridhar backs Shubman Gill to be an all-format leader after Rohit Sharma 🏏🇮🇳

"These two (Gill and Jaiswal) have justified their selections in both ODIs and T20Is. Gill, in particular, has shown that he is more than capable of leading the team across all formats. Shubman Gill for me is an all-format player, and I think he would be the apprentice to captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am sure India will see him as the captain post the 2027 World Cup in all formats."

Imraan Khan named new batting lead at Cricket South Africa🏏🇿🇦

Cricket South Africa has appointed renowned domestic coach and former international player Imraan Khan as their batting lead effective Monday, August 5. Initially named as a temporary replacement for Ashwell Prince for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, Khan will now hold the position permanently.

Khan, a left-handed batter who played one Test for South Africa in 2009, has been the long-time coach of the Dolphins provincial team. Under his leadership, the Dolphins secured two four-day series titles, a shared ODI cup, and reached three CSA T20 tournament finals.

Khan expressed his gratitude for the new role, stating, “I want to thank the KZN Cricket Union for all their support,” Imraan said in a statement. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve loved starting my coaching career at the union that has been my home for many seasons. This is an exciting step in my path as a coach, but Kingsmead will always be home, and I will miss everyone here.”

Dolphins CEO Heinrich also extended his well wishes, saying, “We say that we want to create Proteas from a playing perspective, but the same rings true for coaches,” Strydom said in a statement. “We’re incredibly excited for the next chapter for Immy and want to thank him for his incredible service to KZN Cricket. We wish him all the very best for his new role with Cricket South Africa.”

During his 15-year playing career with the Dolphins, Khan amassed 9,367 runs in 161 first-class matches at an average of 36.58, with 20 centuries. He also played 121 List-A games and 51 T20s.

For his international coaching debut, South Africa will tour the West Indies for two Tests: August 7-11 in Port of Spain and August 15-19 in Providence.
