Vehicle access on Chappy beaches has long been a contentious issue.

This week, Edgartown officials approved a new plan, what beach access advocates say is a major step toward a solution.

There are still a few steps — including a court and state decision — but the idea is to allow more oversand vehicles on Chappy, and in additional areas.

Lou Quattrucci survived a widowmaker heart attack at the East Chop tennis courts this summer, but thanks to a nearby defibrillator and quick help, he beat the 12% survival odds.

Quattrucci is now leading the MV Pulse Project, an initiative to make the life-saving devices more commonly available around the Island and to train more individuals how to use them.

For more than 13,000 years, as the last great North American glacier began to retreat, Martha’s Vineyard, or Noepe, has been home to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).

One of, if not, the greatest landmark of cultural importance to the tribe are the Cliffs, which as ancient and storied as they are, are also a modern victim of resolute erosion.

Recently, the tribe received a grant from the state to do a large-scale study on the past and future impacts of erosion on the Cliffs, but members of the tribe and those who work for the community aren’t oblivious to the fact that there may not be much that they can do other than prolonging the inevitable.

Three people were rescued Wednesday morning from Naushon Island after their boat caught fire Monday, and they were forced to swim ashore and take refuge in a farmhouse for two days.

According to first responders, the three family members — a father, mother, and son — left aboard the Third Wave from Eel Pond in Woods Hole on Friday and were expected to anchor off Naushon Island for the weekend and return Tuesday evening. When they didn’t return, a concerned family member — another son — alerted public safety.

Seemingly an electrical fire aboard the boat Monday night, the Coast Guard reports, forced the family ashore where they were stranded for 30 hours.

The three suffered severe burns from the fire and were transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis via helicopter to be treated.

Anglers of all ages gathered for the Derby celebration at the Farm Neck Golf Club on Sunday, marking the end of the beloved five-week Island tradition.

From police chiefs to business owners, Islanders showed up at a recent hearing in Boston to testify in support of legislation to create a housing bank.

They spoke about a bleak reality for housing on the Vineyard if the bills in question don’t pass and said the day-to-day reality for many locals is growing wealth disparity, socioeconomic challenges, and above all, housing insecurity.

The Island is recovering from a three-day nor’easter that brought heavy rain, high winds, and minor flooding, damaging several boats and prompting ferry cancellations.

Wind gusts reached 53 mph and rainfall totaled up to three inches, but the Island avoided major power outages or structural damage.

Harbormasters credited proactive storm preparation for minimizing impacts, though some vessels broke free of moorings or flooded.
