While watching a wedding sequence, daughter asked a simple question, why the bride is throwing rice backwards? Pondering over it, husband was the first to answer...

Rice is a staple of the Indian diet and because of its basic life-sustaining qualities, it is a symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity. Daughters are considered to be the manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. Her being in the house is a sign of sustained wealth and prosperity. When the daughter gets married and leaves her parents’ house, she throws back rice so that prosperity does not leave parental house.

Similarly when she enters her new house, she throws a pot full of rice onto the floor signalling the arrival of more auspiciousness and prosperity in the new home.

Such is the significance of daughters rightly regarded as Mahalakshmis🙏

What is the connection between legendary freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Ganesh Chaturthi?

It is believed that Bal Gangadhar Tilak was the force behind mass-scale Ganesh utsav celebrations as we know today. Tilak wondered how to unite the common people. He soon realized that celebrating a puja together can be the way. In Maharashtra, the Peshwas had long started the tradition of worshipping Ganapati.

Tilak thought, that instead of home, why not celebrate Ganeshotsav at a public place? That way people will come together and a sense of unity will be fostered. So in 1893, the foundation of this great festival was laid, turning the home celebrations into a grand Pandal where people of all castes gathered to worship the beloved 'God of Everyone'.

Divya Mittal, IAS, who is known for her objective and precise insights, share valuable views on .

With the evolving value system, it is a pertinent query on everyone's mind, what thought process to transfer to children. Read these very basic yet extremely significant tips by Ms Mittal.

For me, the take away was to talk to children a lot about experiences and observations and to practice what you say!

1. Tell them they can do anything.

Tell it so often that they start believing it. That belief will define their destiny.

2. Let them fall.

Let them jump and play and fall and get hurt. Don't jump in to pick them up. Only then will they learn to get up from a failure, dust themselves up and keep walking.

3. Compete

Make them participate in competitions. They will not win every time. But they will become comfortable with failure. Fear of failure is a bigger hindrance in success than failure.

4. Let them take risk.

Monitor them but allow them to do things you feel can be somewhat risky. Adventure sports, climbing a tree. You will see that when they know they can get hurt in the process, they behave responsibly.

5. Abundance mindset.

They have opportunities & resources that you never had. Let them use that as a jump board to go in the higher orbit. Don't impose your scarcity mindset on them.

6. Be a role model

Be yourself what you tell them to be. Nothing breaks a child's heart more than seeing hypocrisy of their parents.

7. Shun bad behaviour.

You must scold them & correct them when they are doing something bad. They need to understand what right behaviour is.

8. Trust them.

Don't be disappointed in them. Always have hope. If you become disappointed in them, they will have no hope for themselves.

9. Give experiences.

Give them a variety of experiences to open their minds and hearts. Take them to orphanages, dance shows, travel, museums. Wherever you go, talk to them about things and their experience. Don't just be busy amongst yourselves

10. Listen.

Don't assume that they are stupid and don't know things. Don't be in a hurry to respond. Listen intently and then speak. Then you will reach them. You will never have a complaint that they don't listen

11. Don't compare

Don't compare your child with anyone. Especially with their siblings. Being the favoured one will make them unprepared for harshness of the world, being the unfavoured one will make them needy and always seeking validation.

12 Most important:

Be their safe place. Where they get love without having to be anything. Tell them that you will always love them, even if you are angry with them. Your love is not conditional on any behaviour of theirs.
