Adm. Linda Fagan Reflects on Increasing Access in the Arctic
"Access, competition and partnership." Adm. Linda Fagan, USCG, vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, reflects on the increasing pace of change and increasing access in the #Arctic. Adm. Fagan made history this week when she received President Biden's nomination to serve as the next commandant of the Coast Guard. If confirmed, she would be the first woman to lead a U.S. military branch. #CoastGuard #USCG #AdmFagan
Exercise Cold Response 2022
Given Russia’s and China’s proximity to the North Pole and Arctic regions, the U.S. and its NATO allies are at a disadvantage when it comes to training for response in colder circumstances.
Therefore, Exercise Cold Response is of the utmost importance.
The U.S. Army Special Forces – commonly known as #GreenBerets – are the United States’ premier unconventional warfare fighting force, focused specifically on working by, with and through partner forces using language skills and cultural savvy. Their participation in the winter warfare course hosted by the Swedish Subarctic Warfare Centre, alongside our NATO allies, helps the soldiers learn how to fight and be self-sufficient in an “unforgiving environment.”
Cold Response 2022 is a long-planned and regular exercise, hosted biannually by Norway. This year’s exercise was announced over eight months ago and is not linked to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine.
Operating in the Arctic is not without risk, as is the case with any military operation. Four Marines lost their lives in a recent helicopter crash in the Arctic while participating in Cold Response 2022.
