👑 New episode drops today!

In the final episode of our series, the ancient walls of Constantinople crumble—and with them, the last heartbeat of the Roman Empire.

Sultan Mehmet II launches his all-or-nothing assault: cannon fire splits the dawn, smoke cloaks the ramparts, and waves of Ottoman soldiers pour through the shattered defenses. Amid the chaos, Emperor Constantine XI refuses to flee.

Across Europe, the fall sends shockwaves—stirring panic, calls for crusade, and a growing awareness that the Eastern Roman Empire, after more than a thousand years, had finally drawn its last breath.

In this episode, we follow the desperate defense of Constantinople as Emperor Constantine XI struggles to withstand the relentless siege.

Ottoman cannons hammer the walls day and night, while engineers carve tunnels beneath the city, seeking to collapse its foundations from below. The defenders cling to the fragile hope of Western aid, even as Sultan Mehmet II pushes them to their breaking point—hauling ships overland to bypass the harbor defenses and constructing towering siege engines in the dead of night to overwhelm the walls.

Desperate, the Greeks fight back with every means at their disposal. Barrels of gunpowder reduce a massive Ottoman siege tower to splinters, while brutal impalements and savage retributions spread fear through both camps. Yet inside the city, political rivalries between Venice and Genoa weaken Constantine’s already fragile coalition, eroding what little unity remains.

With each passing day, the city's fate grows more dire...

In this episode, we trace the final, desperate days of the Byzantine Empire through the eyes of its last emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos, and his formidable rival, Sultan Mehmet II.

As the walls of Constantinople trembled under the relentless bombardment of Ottoman cannons, two vastly different leaders prepared for war—Constantine, a resolute ruler defending his crumbling empire, and Mehmet, a young, ambitious conqueror determined to carve his name into history.

Both men knew the battle was inevitable.

In Constantinople, fear hung heavy in the air as the people clung to fading hopes of Western aid. In Edirne, Mehmet’s forges thundered, casting the largest cannon ever built.

Ancient prophecies foretold the city's fall, but history also warned of disaster for any Muslim ruler who dared to seize it.

The last battle of the great Christian empire was at hand—and both sides knew it would be a fight to the death.

New episode dropping Tuesday (Patrons, live for you now❤️)

In this episode, we dive into the turbulent final century of the Byzantine Empire through the eyes of one of its most fascinating figures: John VI Kantakouzenos.

A reluctant emperor, John inherited a crumbling empire beset by internal strife and foreign threats. While others dreamed of restoring Rome’s former glory, John envisioned a smaller, reformed state that could survive by diplomacy and pragmatism. His alliances with the rising Ottoman Turks, the Italian merchant republics, and the Serbian kingdom reveal the precarious balancing act required to hold the empire together.

By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why the Byzantine Empire fell—and marvel at how it managed to survive as long as it did.

The Face of the Last Roman Emperor

Yesterday (Dec 13, 2024), archaeologists uncovered the only known contemporary portrait of Constantine XI, the last Emperor of Byzantium, during an excavation at an old monastery in Aigialeia, Southern Greece.

It seems this remarkable find survived because it was hidden beneath a layer of frescos, likely painted over centuries ago.

Until now, there were no surviving images of this pivotal figure—the Greek hero who gave his life defending Constantinople during its final siege in 1453.

Looking at his face, you can sense the calm, focus, and regal determination of a man who knew the immense task ahead and the sacrifice he was destined to make.

We’re working on a podcast series exploring the final 100 years of the Byzantine Empire, including the story of Constantine XI. Don’t miss it—subscribe now to follow along!

🇮🇪 New episode out now! 🎯

In this episode, we explore the early years of the Irish Potato Famine, a devastating event that reshaped Ireland's history. Known as The Great Hunger (an Gorta Mór), this crisis led to the deaths of over a million people and forced millions more to flee their homeland.

We'll examine the role of Charles Trevelyan, a British civil servant whose policies worsened the famine's impact, turning a natural blight into a human-made catastrophe. We'll also meet Asenath Nicholson, an American humanitarian who travelled across Ireland, documenting the suffering and offering aid. Her accounts give us a glimpse into the lives of those who endured unimaginable hardships.

As we unravel these early years, we'll see how British colonial policies and mismanagement turned a crop failure into a national tragedy.

John Joseph Tracey, A Scene of Bygone Days, 1845

🇮🇪 A scene all to familiar in 19th century Ireland: A peasant family being evicted from their hut

During the horrific potato famine of the 1840's English landlords evicted families by the 100s of thousands to reduce their taxation rates.

Tennants had virtually no rights and were sometimes ejected in the middle of winter with nothing but the clothes on their back.

"The Great Hunger" is a defining moment in Irish statehood.

We're covering this dark period of history very soon so make sure you're subscribed!
