🇮🇪 New episode out now! 🎯

In this episode, we explore the early years of the Irish Potato Famine, a devastating event that reshaped Ireland's history. Known as The Great Hunger (an Gorta Mór), this crisis led to the deaths of over a million people and forced millions more to flee their homeland.

We'll examine the role of Charles Trevelyan, a British civil servant whose policies worsened the famine's impact, turning a natural blight into a human-made catastrophe. We'll also meet Asenath Nicholson, an American humanitarian who travelled across Ireland, documenting the suffering and offering aid. Her accounts give us a glimpse into the lives of those who endured unimaginable hardships.

As we unravel these early years, we'll see how British colonial policies and mismanagement turned a crop failure into a national tragedy.

John Joseph Tracey, A Scene of Bygone Days, 1845

🇮🇪 A scene all to familiar in 19th century Ireland: A peasant family being evicted from their hut

During the horrific potato famine of the 1840's English landlords evicted families by the 100s of thousands to reduce their taxation rates.

Tennants had virtually no rights and were sometimes ejected in the middle of winter with nothing but the clothes on their back.

"The Great Hunger" is a defining moment in Irish statehood.

We're covering this dark period of history very soon so make sure you're subscribed!

🇺🇸 I'm currently midway through an epic roadtrip through southwest USA (hence why episodes have been coming out so slowly lately).

I've spent almost two weeks in Texas alone and found Texans to be some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I've ever met!

My favourite part of this trip has been the wealth of attractions. Ancient Pueblo villages, The grave of outlaw legend Billy The Kid (bolted down and caged as it kept getting stolen), NASA's Apollo 11 launch room and The Alamo siege site. ⛳

America has blown my mind and I can't believe I've almost been here for 4 weeks!

As far as new episodes go, I have a series on Akhenaten ready to record and am part way through an episode on Alp Arslan. Looking forward to dropping episodes as soon as I'm back. 🎙️

Thanks for everyone whose tuning in! 🚗

Abu Simbel was built during the reign of Pharoah Ramses II. Sitting only a few kilometres from the border of Sudan it was constructed in hope of "Egyptianising" the independent tribes of Nubia while displaying the grandeur of The Egyptian Kingdom.

Inside is one of the first attempts at animation, where Ramses II is shown in battle against The Hittite kingdom in The Battle of Kadesh. In the scenes, arms and legs are shown twice or four times next to eachother to give the illusion of motion!

Like The Temple Of Philae, this ancient site was rescued from rising water levels thanks to UNESCO and the wider European community at massive cost.

Philae Temple was one of the last holdouts of ancient Egyptian religion where Nubian priests continued to worship Isis well into the 5th century.

It was Emperor Justinian finally who finally closed the door on the structure in the 6th century.

When Christianity faced persecution under the Roman Empire, many Christians fled south and made crude chapels within the ancient building (pic 5).

Dishing out the same persecution they faced, they destroyed many of the ancient friezes and carved crude crucifixes into the walls (pic 2).

For me, these puny markings scratched over the stunning fresco's only magnified the grandeur of this ancient civilization and the ignorance of those who defaced them.

After the Nile was dammed in the late 1900s, Philae and many other island temples were at risk of being lost by rising water levels. Luckily a UNESCO funded project moved the temple piece by piece to another island.

Several other ancient temples remain submerged beneath The Nile with the hope of them being rescued at a later date.

👋 Hello my friends, we've just dropped a new episode! I hope you enjoy it!

This episode marks the penultimate episode of our series tracing Operation Barbarossa, Hi**er's 1941 invasion of the USSR.

Join us as we follow Marshal Friedrich Paulus and the Wehrmacht 6th Army to their fateful end at Stalingrad. Through poignant handwritten letters, we'll delve into how frontline soldiers grappled with their mortality and the erosion of their faith in N**i propaganda.

Throughout the episode, we explore the ingenious and brutal strategies employed by Marshall Vasily Chuikov to maintain order amidst the chaos.

In the desperate streets of Stalingrad, Rattenkrieg, or 'war of the rats,' emerged as a brutal form of close-quarters urban combat, marked by intense, chaotic skirmishes within the sprawling ruins of the city.

As Vasily Chuikov said "In the blazing city, we do not suffer cowards..."

As the tide turns against the Wehrmacht, we witness the N**i High Command's struggle against Adolf Hi**er's insistence on a symbolic last stand.

The Battle of Stalingrad, often deemed the deadliest in history, holds a profound place in Russian pride today. Tune in to learn why.

🔥 In this gripping continuation of our Operation Barbarossa series, The Red Army rallies as the Wehrmacht's relentless march towards Moscow accelerates.

With the Wehrmacht closing in on the Soviet capital, the USSR faces its last chance for survival. In the midst of the chaos, Stalin emerges from his depression, adorning his walls with portraits of renowned Russian generals for inspiration. The tide begins to turn as he starts heeding the counsel of Georgy Zhukov.

As Hi**er faces setbacks and starts to lose his grip, he withdraws into himself, sidelining veteran generals and taking personal control of the army.

Ignoring desperate pleas for essentials like fuel, ammunition, and winter clothing, The Fuhrer fires many of his most experienced military minds.

The loyalty of the Wehrmacht, however, pushes on through one of the coldest blizzards in the last century. But as tank engines freeze and machine guns jam, we witness the stark reality that belief alone can only take a man so far.

Circling Moscow, Germans encounter unexpected challenges as far-eastern divisions arrive en-masse. The Motherland calls, and the people of the USSR answer!

Spotify wrapped 2023 is in!

By far this has been my biggest year of new listeners. It's been so humbling to have so many people tuning in from around the world to talk about history.

Creating and editing a podcast is a big time investment but I really get such a buzz once I've created an episode I'm proud of.

To all of my listeners old and new, thanks so much for your support and (especially) for my Patrons and those who have shared the show with their friends.

If I had to pick my "favourite" episode, it would be the story of Boabdil, The Last Muslim King of Spain.

I'd love to hear which episodes you've enjoyed the most or how you've discovered the show 👀

Hears to plenty more to come, and (as always) thanks for listening!

Love Elliot

🚨NEW EPISODE RELEASE! Listen on Spotify/Apple Podcasts/Link in bio🚨

In this episode we delve into Operation Barbarossa, Hi**er's audacious invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The morning of June 22nd, 1941, witnessed four million men surging across the borders between the USSR and the German Reich, beginning the largest land invasion in world history.

We explore the backstory of this invasion and uncover why it took Joseph Stalin by surprise. Through the diaries of frontline soldiers, we gain insights into the first few hours of the invasion and the unpreparedness of the Red Army. We also delve into Hi**er's twisted worldview, drawing from extracts of his memoir, 'Mein Kampf,' to understand his vision of Lebensraum and his chilling extermination plan for the Slavic people.

America's entry into World War II is often seen as a turning point, but Operation Barbarossa, often overshadowed, was equally pivotal.

This episode is the first of a four-part series, make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss part two.

🌟 Did you know about Saddam Hussein's fascination with Nebuchadnezzar and ancient Mesopotamia? 🏛️ This historical connection sheds light on the intriguing aspects of his regime.

Saddam Hussein, the former President of Iraq, had a deep admiration for the ancient Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II. He saw himself as a modern-day successor to Nebuchadnezzar, and his reign reflected his obsession with the glories of ancient Mesopotamia. 🌍

This propaganda piece shows him on an Assyrian war chariot, complete with modern ICBM missiles!

Under Saddam Hussein's rule, there were extensive efforts to rebuild and restore ancient Babylon, including the reconstruction of the Ishtar Gate and the Hanging Gardens. These projects aimed to evoke the grandeur of Nebuchadnezzar's time and showcase Iraq's rich historical heritage.

This intriguing historical connection between Saddam Hussein and Nebuchadnezzar sheds light on the complexity of power, identity, and the influence of ancient civilizations.

This is an 'Evasion Kit' given to British airmen during WWII.

These kits were put together to help downed airmen escape and evade the enemy during WWII. They contained gold coins and rings that in theory could be traded by the airman for safe passage back to friendly forces.
