❤️ Cardiac Screening Week Kicks Off at Claremorris GAA Club! 🏐

The launch of Cardiac Screening Week at Claremorris GAA club. Over 180 children from our Claremorris community will be screened this week, making this the largest initiative of its kind in Ireland to date.

Each year, 5,000 people in Ireland experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. And Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) tragically claims 100 young lives annually. Cardiac screening is crucial in identifying heart conditions early—before symptoms appear—helping to prevent these heartbreaking losses.

A massive thank you to Donna Cassidy and the entire crew at Claremorris South Responder Group for driving this project and working tirelessly to ensure so many children could be accommodated. Your dedication is remarkable!

Huge credit to everyone at Claremorris GAA Club for making this life saving screening possible. Special thanks to Club Chairman Paul Hunt, Fundraising Officer Padraic McHugh for spearheading such a significant fundraising campaign, and Orla Sweeney along with the entire Claremorris GAA team.

A huge shoutout to Bord Na N-og, especially Martin Cosgrove, for your hard work and commitment to screening so many children in our community.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the Dillon Quirke Foundation, and particularly to Dylan’s parents, Dan and Hazel Quirke. The foundation was created in memory of Dylan Quirke, who tragically passed away at just 24 years old during a club championship match in Semple Stadium in 2022.

For those who missed out on this round of screenings, don’t worry—there will be another opportunity in April.

We are all deeply shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of James McNeive.

James was a very genuine, kind, outgoing young man with so much life to live. He loved life and was an exceptionally positive person who brought a smile to everyone who knew him. He was the life and soul of every gathering, always with a smile and a great sense of humour.

James was a key member of the Aghamore GAA club on and off the pitch for many years. He was a talented footballer and a powerful athlete who loved football and always played with heart and incredible determination. James enjoyed the physical battles of the game and never shied from a tackle. Even in training, with James on the opposing side, there would be nothing easy. He achieved a lot of success on the sports field, including two U21 County Championship Titles Division A in 2015 and 2016, and winning an All-Ireland Medal with Mary Immaculate College.

James always gave so much of his time, often helping out with underage training throughout the years. He was always there to support and encourage the younger members of the club breaking into the senior and junior teams.

James was also a dedicated and professional primary school teacher in Dublin and more recently at Gortskehy National School near Claremorris. He was extremely popular with students and parents, giving so much of his time and energy in the classroom and on the school pitch, preparing school teams for training and matches. I spoke to a parent of one of his students in Gortskehy National School recently, who recalled how his kids loved their new teacher. He mentioned how James brought so much joy to the students in the classroom and the incredible interest and passion he brought to the school's football teams.

There is a deep sense of loss in Knock, Aghamore, and the entire region on the loss of James McNeive.

I want to extend my deepest sympathies to his mother Bernadette, sister Fiona, brothers Michael, Mathew, Peter Jnr., girlfriend Catherine, and the extended McNeive and Sweeney families.

May his soul rest in peace.

Great news this week on the Western Rail Corridor and the reopening of the line from Claremorris to Athenry. However, it's important that the line from Claremorris to Sligo is not forgotten. This must follow suit. Full article in the The Connaught Telegraph below.

THE news that the reinstatement of the old rail line between Claremorris and Athenry is recommended under the All-Island Strategic Rail Review is excellent news for Mayo.

To the residents of Knock,

Just a quick update in relation to the Belmont Hotel.

I have been working hard over the past number of weeks to bring clarity to the people of Knock in relation to the Belmont Hotel since news first broke. Unfortunately, the people responsible for this project in Mayo County Council have not been forthcoming with information. However, I have finally got more information from the Developers after they agreed to meet with me yesterday.

The Developers informed me they have an agreement with Mayo County Council to accommodate Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs) for a period of 5 years.

The Developers have claimed it is for Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection only. However, I put it to them that the numbers of Ukrainians coming to Ireland is reducing on a daily basis. The demand nationally is actually for IPAS centres. I got no concrete commitment that this would not happen.

I stressed the various other local concerns and the frustration in the Knock community with the lack of consultation and engagement. Finally after yesterday’s meeting with me they finally agreed to meet with local residents on this matter.

I would strongly encourage locals who are involved in local community groups, resident groups and residents of Knock to attend. We have been misled by the Developer and denied information from the Government up to now.

I hope this will be a platform for transparency and open dialogue with the local community. And as I stressed to them, no work should take place in the Belmont Hotel before dialogue with the local community occurs.

If you would like to attend or to be updated please private message with your name, address and email.

It was an honour to attend the commemoration ceremony for Private Billy Kedian in Ballyhaunis this afternoon.

We gathered to unveil a monument dedicated to his memory, celebrating his extraordinary courage and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his comrades and for peace.

Billy was tragically killed in Lebanon on the 31st of May 1999 while on a Peacekeeping Mission with the Irish Defense Forces. In a moment of true heroism, Billy lost his life while ensuring the safety of his comrades, saving 14 men that morning by getting them to the bunker.

Congratulations to the organising committee who left no stone unturned to ensure Billy’s life, heroism, and courage would be remembered. Their dedication and hard work have provided us with a lasting tribute to a true local hero.

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John O'Mahony. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife Geraldine, his cherished daughters Gráinne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre, Cliodhna, and his devoted brothers Fr. Dan and Fr. Stephen.

John's dedication to his work in the Oireachtas was a testament to his commitment to serving our county. In the GAA, his legacy is unmatched, leading Galway, Mayo, and Leitrim to Connacht and All-Ireland titles.

I fondly remember his second spell as Mayo Manager from 2006 to 2010. During that time, he and his Mayo teams brought immense joy and pride to our household and many others. John's passion, integrity, and spirit will leave a lasting impact.

At a time when Ireland is facing hundreds of millions of euros in fines for not meeting EU targets, it's astonishing that our Government has signed Ireland up to further EU obligations.

Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Green Party seem determined to outsource critical decisions regarding migration to Brussels. It's a crucial issue that deserves careful consideration and open discussion.

Full interview on Midwest Radio below.
