Robin Lamothe on In and Off

"Welcome to the Festival d’Avignon: 38 degrees in the shade (if you can find any), crowded restaurants, millions of flyers on the ground, and posters of varying degrees of interest. You meet people you haven’t seen for ages, and others you hoped you’d never see again. And then there are those titles of works that are so revolting because they perpetuate clichés. A nod to the company that named its play ‘Darling, I’ve cheated on you (and that’s not the worst of it)’ with an editorial that reads: ‘He’s a racist and his wife is cheating on him with an illegal immigrant.’ Get the picture? Ah, Avignon, where theatrical fantasy sometimes meets the comedy of the absurd, and where we wonder if our presence there isn’t a performance in itself."

An article by Callysta Croizer

"2024 is a year of many changes for Montpellier Danse, a dance festival initiated by Dominique Bagouet in 1981 in the wake of the Nouvelle danse current. This 44th edition was the last directed by Jean-Paul Montanari, after over four decades at the head of the event."

‘Sweet roaring’ promised this year’s Dansa València festival of national and international dance

Riikka Laakso attended the 37th edition of the annual Dansa València Festival of national and international dance that took place from 13–21 April 2024. Its subtitle, ‘Dulce rugir’ (‘sweet roaring’) suggests a feline murmur – whether purr or growl – as well as the low rumbling of thunder; either way, promising multiple experiences for the audience. I attended the last three days of the festival, which offered a full choreographic menu around the city’s singular venues.

Can beauty be a form of resistance? Can dance transform people, systems?

Maria Palma Teixeira speaks with Catarina Câmara about an ongoing prison project using dance to explore both chains and changes

"I’m parked outside the Linhó Prison in Cascais, Portugal, waiting for the torrential rain to stop. The building was inaugurated in 1955, during the dictatorial regime, and now houses around 500 inmates, most between the ages of 20 and 30, according to a prison guard. I’m here to watch a contemporary dance class of CORPOEMCADEIA (‘body in chain’, literally translated, which in Portuguese plays with the double meaning of ‘cadeia’ as chain/prison), a dance project for inmates initiated in 2019 by Catarina Câmara with the support of Companhia Olga Roriz and the Portuguese Directorate General for Reintegration and Prison Services."

Two (relative) youngsters share their experiences of a festival for (relative) oldsters.

"We meet in the foyer of Sadler’s Wells, where three screens are showing dance films on loop, headphones dangling. ‘I don’t like to talk about age,’ shrugs veteran Bausch performer Malou Airaudo in Sarah Vaughan-Jones’ film ‘No Space for Age’ (2022), ‘There is no space for that on stage.’ Afterwards in a pub, Liza wonders how exactly we’re going to talk about age in our article. Dom doesn’t know. Can we say elderly people? Not old, surely. We agree on older dancers."

Read take on London's Taiwan Festival

"The first major festival of Taiwanese culture to grace London makes its home at The Coronet Theatre. This ‘Victorian jewel’ is a darkly lit, antiquated secret of a theatre, to which the festival brings a landscape of creations both ultra-modern and traditional. It’s a feast for the eyes and a pleasant contradiction. Dance and theatre makers present their work surrounded by free events featuring VR, thematic beverages, and serene installations of Taiwanese craftsmanship, extra elements that evoke the wider artistic context of Taiwan’s contemporary arts scene."

Oonagh Duckworth dives into Les Brigittines - Playhouse for Movement three-day season on the sea exploring the poetics of submerged perspectives.

"In March 2024, le Brigittines theatre in Brussels hosted a three-day event of conferences, workshops, performances and lectures under the title Ici Commence La Mer (‘here begins the sea’). (...) The Brigittines’ idea was to immerse participants in the serious issues surrounding our impact on the sea and the life within it. The event was not about sounding an alarm bell but preferred to make poetics the ally of action. Described as a campaign of ‘sensibilisation’, the combination of each strand – political, educational, performative and practical – contributed to a dramaturgy intending to heighten our awareness of both the art and the problems being addressed."
