From a miserable life, working in a dead end factory job, living in a bog-standard 1950's 3-bed terraced house in a 'rough' area of town, struggling to find the mortgage, loan repayments, credit card and household bills every month...

To now living in a lovely Victorian house, on the edge of town, surrounded by Countryside. That dead end job is a thing of the past, and all the financial worries have disappeared.

It's an an amazing turnaround, and what's even more remarkable is that James had zero knowledge, let alone experience of the venture that dragged him out of the misery to where his life is today.

I don't know about you...

(And it could simply be the way I'm put together...)

Whenever I buy anything either online or mail order...

I like to see what the businesses follow-up marketing material is like.

And...

It's usually VERY disappointing.

For instance...

I bought some amazing home-made marshmallows online - totally different to what you buy in the shops.

I bought 4-packs, each pack a different flavour: lemon and lime, coffee, blueberry and vanilla.

To say they were delicious would be an understatement.

Oh... and I *might* have eaten all the coffee ones while watching a film on my own.

Anyway...

This was in May last year (2023) when I placed the order.

Since then...

Not a dicky bird!

No reminder about other flavours, no special offers, no Christmas offer... no tantalising images of the marshmallows...

Nothing!

In fact, I'd actually forgotten how nice they were... it was only while writing this message this morning in Costa Coffee that I remembered.

So-much-so...

I placed another order today.

But...

And here's the kicker...

I'd have placed maybe two orders much earlier if they had kept in contact with me through email or direct mail.

It's amazing how quickly you can lose customers without any follow-ups.

It's why I use email in the way I do.

And it's not just the small businesses that are guilty of not following up on orders with customers...

Some major retailers are just as bad.

Tomorrow...

I'll give you another example of lack of marketing follow-ups.

Sometimes, when I have an hour or so to spare, I like to look back at messages I've wrote and sent in the past.

It's good to see where I am now compared to where I was back then.

One such message I wrote back in 2015 went like this:

So... carrying on from Friday where I described how I went on holiday to Majorca for 2 weeks while my information publishing business ran in the background on autopilot.

Here's what went on...

A couple of solo ads were sent that generated 252 new opt-ins for my list

The new subscribers went straight onto my daily email sequence which automatically sent out a daily email message and an offer at the end

My printer sent out 5,000 direct mail letters which was promoting a new consultancy service

An ad agency set up a couple of Facebook ad campaigns... for list building
All this occurred while I was splashing around in the pool with my two children.

What you can see from this is that I delegate a lot of my business now.

In the past... like many small business... I tried to do literally everything myself.

BIG mistake!

It meant that I used to work 10+ hours a day.

Now, I'd rather invest in using other companies to complete a lot of the mundane tasks that in the past took up a lot of my time.

And it's something you should really be looking at within your business.

Once you start freeing up your time, it can be used more creatively and productively.

It's really moved my business on to the next level.

I wrote that message soon after discovering the HUGE advantages of delegation.

And to this day, nearly all my daily mundane tasks are done by others.

I called it a "BIG mistake".

And it was!

I couldn't believe how more productive I could be without having to deal with all those mundane, but necessary tasks.

The second biggest mistake I made in the early days was not finding a mentor to teach me and guide me.

Whether it's an ego thing... we think we know everything and how to do everything.

And some people do 'wing it' a bit and get by.

Once I'd found a mentor... my business tippled in size and posted record profits.

It was a combination of recognising the strengths of the business, then following a certain method.

And, fast forward to 2023 I still follow those principles.

And what I've learnt, and put into practise is what I share with you through these messages.
