History of Pride Month

Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Q***r (LGBTQ) Pride Month is celebrated annually in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan which was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day" but celebrations often last for the entire month. Memorials are often held during this month for those LGBTQ+ people who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQ+ individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

The first Pride march in New York City was held on June 28, 1970, on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

Early on the morning of Saturday, June 28, 1969, le***an, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at 43 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. This riot and further protests over the following nights were the watershed moment in the modern LGBT rights movement and the impetus for organizing LGBT pride marches on a much larger public scale.

The first U.S. Gay Pride Week and March was meant to give the community a chance to gather together to "...commemorate the Christopher Street Uprisings of last summer in which thousands of homosexuals went to the streets to demonstrate against centuries of abuse ... from government hostility to employment and housing discrimination, Mafia control of Gay bars, and anti- Homosexual laws" (Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee Fliers, Franklin Kameny Papers). The concept behind the initial Pride march came from members of the Eastern Conference of Homophile Organizations (ECHO), who had been organizing an annual July 4th demonstration (1965-1969) known as the "Reminder Day Pickets" at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. At the ECHO Conference in November 1969, the 13 homophile organizations in attendance voted to pass a resolution to organize a national annual demonstration to be called Christopher Street Liberation Day. By all estimates, there were three to five thousand marchers at the inaugural Pride in New York City. Today marchers in New York City number in the millions. Since 1970, LGBTQ+ people worldwide have continued to gather together in June to march with Pride and demonstrate for equal rights.

Here's a brilliant review from ( Rachel Dax ):
This film is so inspiring. Firstly, the story itself - I did not know anything about Diana Nyad, who she is and what she has achieved - what an incredible woman! Secondly, having older le***ans on screen is something I am always very happy to see - and these ones are so very interesting and engaging - hurrah! Thirdly, the film’s core message based on this true story is to never give up on the dream, even if you are older and feel like maybe you’ve missed your chance - yes!! Fourthly, both Annette Bening and Jodie Foster give brilliant performances - Bening really should be nominated for an OSCAR for this. Her commitment to the role is startling - she trained for a year with an Olympic coach and learned how to swim for over 4 hours at a time and emulate Diana Nyad’s particular style of stroke - an outstanding, complex and nuanced performance. Fifthly, both actors allowed themselves to be filmed with almost no make up - raw - and in these days of 8K filming where every single line and blemish can be seen that is brave - real female faces and real older women’s bodies on screen - fantastic. 📽️🎬🎞️💖

01/06/2023

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has signed the most severe anti-LGBTQ bill in the world, into law. Here at home in the United States, over 650 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced, passed, or made law in 46 states, so far this year alone. Think the GOP wouldn't make being gay a capital offense if they could? Consider that Uganda, and other countries in Africa, were used as American conservatives' hate lab for decades, just to see if laws like this deadly edict could get passed.

Never think it can't happen here, too.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has signed some of the harshest anti-LGBTQ laws in the world, the speaker of parliament said, defying international pressure.
