Savory Words Publishing was started in response to feedback received through SW’s sister company, T.S. Writing Services: “Now that you’ve edited my book, where can I get it published?” In 2013, as part of T.S. Writing’s 10th anniversary, Savory Words Publishing was established, focused on Deaf authors. Only a select few books (both print and digital) are accepted each year. Nearly 500 miles away from the storytelling event at Tennessee School for the Deaf (see previous post), another ASL storytelling event featuring "WASH" took place.

At the C. Burr Artz Library in downtown Frederick, MD, Deb Myers narrated her beautifully illustrated book in ASL to an audience of about 60 people. Also on hand were the illustrator Julie Bourne and Savory Words owner Trudy Suggs; all three women are Deaf. Making this event happen was the ever-energetic Donna DiMarco, representing the Maryland Deaf Community Center (MDCC).

Yesterday (Dec. 18) was a busy day for the WASH book, authored by Deb Myers and illustrated by Julie Bourne!

First up: At the Tennessee School for the Deaf, as part of its "Viking Tales" series, Pearlene and Darrell Utley told the story of "WASH" in ASL with elementary students. See our next post for the other event with photos.

This book, published by Savory Words, is the first of five in a series. In WASH, Winnie, a little fox, learns the many different meanings of "WASH" with her grandmother as they go about their day. A lively, fun book, this story is a must-have for any bookshelf for people of all ages.

Whoops! In 1934, "dord" was listed as a word in the second edition of Webster's New International Dictionary, when it was supposed to be "D or d." Worse yet, the error was unnoticed for five years. To read more, visit https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/brief-history-dord-180962266.
