Contributions by: Maria Toumazou, Samantha McCulloch, Sepideh Karami and Madeleine Morley

Amanda is an artist book by Olga Micińska made in the framework of The Building Institute, an experimental organization aiming to strengthen the position of femme builders in the domain of technical construction work. Amanda brings together literary texts by Maria Toumazou, Samantha McCulloch, Sepideh Karami and Madeleine Morley, combining fiction stories with visual artwork.

Inspired by the Tradeswomen: magazine for women in blue-collar work published in the 80's and 90's in the United States, Amanda is a periodical discussing matters of technology and industry from a feminist (not only female) perspective. The first issue contains fiction stories of an emancipatory character, citing trade associations, oil industry in Iran and ghosts of the printer feeders.

Publication of the first issue of Amanda is kindly supported by Mondriaan Fonds and Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst.

Olga Micińska is a visual artist currently living in Amsterdam. Also trained as a woodworker, Olga collaborates with craft studios of various domains. Recently she has initiated The Building Institute, an experimental and non-formal organization engaging with diverse questions surrounding the subjects of labor and technology, and aiming to strengthen the position of femmes in the field of technical construction work.

"inside her, so many very different things are working together to keep her alive. a single cell in her body has more memory than the conscious mind has. inside her cells, mitochondria, a previously independent form of life, have found a haven and trade their ability to synthesize proteins and metabolize fats for room to live and reproduce. we’re in her cells too now, and the cells have accepted us."

Lisa Gutscher lives and works in Frankfurt am Main where she is currently enrolled at Städelschule. As a DAAD-scholar she studied Georgian Polyphony in the Caucasus region in 2020/21. Gutscher’s work consists of bodies made up of both found and haphazardly produced attributes. It stands as a network of abiding incompletion, an ever changing choir of urgencies and pleasures, contusions and failures, that communally relay polyphonically. Recent exhibitions include Against a dark sky it is possible to catch glimmers of the wild energetics of indeterminacies in action, 1822-Forum, Frankfurt am Main (2022); FÜNFZEHN JAHRE – FÜNFZEHN WERKE, Kunsthalle Mannheim, Mannheim (2021); facets, faces, Fffriedrich, Frankfurt am Main (2021); Recession Grimace, Klosterruine, Berlin (2020); 3-4 trees, ea-shared space, Tbilisi (2020).

The book will be available for purchase during the exhibition, 15 March - 9 April 2022.
Additional distribution points will be announced shortly.

Supported by Kulturamt Frankfurt, Stiftung der Frankfurter Sparkasse

Artist Olga Micińska has produced a special new poster for the Printed Matter, Inc. Virtual Art Book Fair - as a prelude to her forthcoming publication, ‘Amanda’! It features images and text from the collaborators of the upcoming project!

AMANDA

Forthcoming

A collection of texts and images will unpack and popularize the image of a feminist worker (not solely female) by challenging the gendered nature of the domestic/the workshop architecture. The book is to combine artistic research with fictional narratives, intending to reflect on the performative features of sculptures as prototypes, tangible objects which can fictionalize facts or actualize speculations.

A New Fair for a New Time - Same heart ❤

While the past year has been challenging, we are happy that Printed Matter, Inc. found a way to unite the community of artists’ publishers via its first ever Virtual iteration of their long-standing Art Book Fair!

We’re excited to be included in 400 exhibitors from over 40 countries! Even though Maria Editions is based in New York and Nicosia, we are proud to have been a platform for artists’ practices from all over the world.

During the fair you will be able to reach us via chat, attend special events, purchase our publications and browse our virtual table!

Central to our virtual table will be the launch of Sophia Dawson’s ‘CORRESPONDENCE’ which will be accompanied by a conversation with the artist! We will also share glimpses to our upcoming publication, ‘AMANDA’ by Olga Micińska and a specially commissioned poster preluding it!

The Opening is free and open to the public, February 24-28 – Register here, https://pmvabf.org/

We have a new logo designed by Orestis Lazouras

Our M (for Maria, after our first names) made out of daggers!

Although our old logo looked like a latin cross, it was a dagger in DejaVu Sans all along, and we wanted to give more emphasis to this symbol and the many ways it inspires Maria Editions!

The dagger represents an iron roasting spit symbolizing the skewering or cutting out of dubious matter. In typography, as a variant of the obelus, it was originally used to mark questionable or corrupt words or passages in manuscripts of the Homeric epics. Medieval scribes used the symbols extensively for critical markings of manuscripts. In addition to this, the dagger was also used in notations in early Christianity, to indicate a minor intermediate pause in the chanting of Psalms and it is also used to indicate a breath mark when reciting.

We knew the dagger was our logo when it magically appeared on the manuscript file name of our first book published under Maria Editions, Maria†Maria†.doxc. A collaborative project on the faith that can unite two friends and artists through a dialogical drive.

Maria Editions is an artist-run independent imprint founded by Marysia Gacek and Maria Toumazou in Glasgow in 2014. Currently based in Nicosia and New York, Maria Editions is dedicated to nurturing soft sensibilities and neglected aspects surrounding art practices by providing a platform for new art works, enlisting emerging artists as editors, and publishing compilations of essays, translations, books of poetry, obsolete literature, collections of letters, and personal archives of images and other ephemera.
