The greatest teacher in life can be failure. Weโ€™ve all failed at something, sometimes big, sometimes small. Our society has become more and more averse to failure, with people consciously avoiding itโ€”but what are the benefits of failing, even if they are not obvious in the moment?

For this issue, we seek thought-provoking, critical work from a range of disciplines and perspectives. Some approaches to the topic might be, but are not limited to:
โ€ข PอŸeอŸrอŸcอŸeอŸpอŸtอŸiอŸoอŸnอŸsอŸ: How do different cultures or fields view the role of failure in education and learning?
โ€ข DอŸiอŸsอŸcอŸoอŸvอŸeอŸrอŸyอŸ: How have scientific or technological breakthroughs been born out of failures?
โ€ข IอŸdอŸeอŸnอŸtอŸiอŸtอŸyอŸ: How does failure shape individual identity and self-perception?
โ€ข IอŸnอŸnอŸoอŸvอŸaอŸtอŸiอŸoอŸnอŸ: How does failure drive innovation across different sectors?
โ€ข PอŸrอŸoอŸfอŸeอŸsอŸsอŸiอŸoอŸnอŸaอŸlอŸ gอŸrอŸoอŸwอŸtอŸhอŸ: What is the role of failure in personal and professional growth?
โ€ข EอŸcอŸoอŸnอŸoอŸmอŸiอŸcอŸsอŸ: How does economic theory account for market failures, and what are the implications for policy?
โ€ข BอŸuอŸsอŸiอŸnอŸeอŸsอŸsอŸ: What are the effects of a business failure?

We accept two general types of submissions: critical essays and non-traditional (or multimodal) compositions, such as poems, short stories, or digital artifacts. Please include a 250-word abstract outlining project goals and how the contribution meaningfully engages with ongoing scholarly conversations.

You may submit pieces for review by following the instructions on the Submissions page (https://www.processjmus.org/question/submission) on our website. Be sure to include your full name and email address on the submitted document. Questions may be directed to the editorial board at [email protected].

In the latest issue of ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด, Travis York showcases the ways that ๐˜‰๐˜“๐˜’, a magazine for Black gay and le***an communities published from 1988 to 1994, responded to the AIDS crisis. โ

York not only highlights headlines on the effects of racism and homophobia on Black q***r communities, but they also reveal how this response included AIDS prevention advertisements and comics.โ

In issue 8.1 of ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด, Patrick Buchanan offers a postcolonial reading of J.M. Coetzeeโ€™s ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ, a retelling of Daniel Defoeโ€™s ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ from the perspective of Susan Barton, a White woman who is stranded on the same island as Defoeโ€™s Crusoe and Friday. โ
โ
Buchanan problematizes Susanโ€™s role as narrator, arguing that she imposes European concepts of identity and epistemology on Friday, who resists by operating as a nonauthor in his own embodied and non-literary narrative.โ

In issue 8.1 of ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด, Terra Zhang presents a case study demonstrating the necessity of a global turn in Medieval Studies. โ
โ
Examining the works of three travel authors from the medieval Islamic world, Zhang focuses on the various conceptions of home presented by these authors, considering the ways in which experiences of cultural difference allow them to explore their own multivalent identities. โ

Identity is formed through constant negotiation both within oneโ€™s own community and in conversation with the Other. In this issue, our contributors consider both sides of the coin, examining how the friction of cross-cultural encounters can prompt exploration of the self and how marginalized communities create strategies and resources that allow their members to thrive.

ใ€€โ—พ Terra Zhang's essay considers three travel authors from the medieval Islamic world, focusing on their various conceptions of "home" and the ways in which experiences of cultural difference allow them to explore their own multivalent identities.

ใ€€โ—พ Patrick Buchanan offers a postcolonial reading of J.M. Coetzeeโ€™s ๐˜๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ, a retelling of Daniel Defoeโ€™s ๐˜™๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฆ, arguing that Friday, as reimagined and represented by Coetzee, operates as a nonauthor in his own embodied and non-literary narrative.

ใ€€โ—พ Serena Jampel provides an analysis of the ways Mel Brooks depicts Jewish identity and satirizes N***s in the 1968 film, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ถ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด, demonstrating how the film reveals the dangers of laughing at fascism.

ใ€€โ—พ Travis York calls attention to untold stories of the AIDS crisis by showcasing the various ways that ๐˜‰๐˜“๐˜’, a magazine for Black gay and le***an communities published from 1988 to 1994, responded to the epidemic.

The essays in this issue demonstrate the multiplicity of identity, exploring how religion, race, gender, sexuality, and nationality shape identity across a variety of places and times. Critically, they also address how identity can be a source of joy, resilience, and community, even in the most adverse circumstances.

We hope you'll keep an eye out for our upcoming cfp, to be announced soon!
